Since Kickstarter has time limits, seems to me the way to do this is
to put up a website with project details, and then stir up publicity
directed toward the website, before going on Kickstarter. <br>
<br>
The skill-sets and cultural variables don't often overlap between
geekdom and promotional activity. So there's probably room for
something like a promotional agency that can take on the task of
getting the word out about projects. <br>
<br>
Major PR agencies have extensive direct personal contact with
journalists. Journalists in certain areas (business, sci &
tech, medicine, entertainment, etc.) rely heavily on press releases
from PR agencies, for leads and stories. (For example all the news
you might have seen today about the large asteroid fly-by this
afternoon, was probably the result of NASA sending out press
releases.)<br>

this was to point out that there are people with money
willing to give that money to you with no strings attached
if you have a project and a funny video.</p>
<p>Imagine what the mesh project or sudo radio could do with
$10,000. I know that lots of money does not = great
project, but i would encourage some of the projects out
there to think in terms of what they want to do (dream
big), instead of what they can do now by scraping together
parts on with a non existent budget.</p>

I've seen some pretty obnoxo bits come
across these tubes, including nasty
ad-hominems, assertions of superiority,
category put-downs, and "I refuse to hear
you" stuff. Most of that seems to me to be
psychological defensiveness, heated-up by
dynamics such as you pointed out in your
article excerpt yesterday, plus the usual
outcomes of a hybridized communications
medium that's part conversation, part
broadcast, delayed rather than realtime, and
minus all nonverbal cues. <br>

Generally the sting wears off after a few
days and then it's over & done with.
Contrast to: imagine if every conversation
you ever had at a pub, was preserved for
posterity and searchable under your name.
(The idea that this stuff needs to be
indexed & searchable is more than a
little narcissistic: to quote someone I was
hanging out with last night, are we really
so important?) <br>

Knowing the person at the other end of the
wire, and being able to translate their
writing into their spoken voice, makes many
of those issues disappear. In my mind's ear
I hear you telling sheep jokes. They're not
bad, for sheep jokes;-)<br>

to build another giant gay sheep?<br>
