Does someone have interest in looking into babel to identify what would be needed to ensure that the same radio is not used for both inbound and outbound when relaying (in situations where this is viable) ?

Since most nodes in the network will be dual-radio or better, then this feature might really make a big difference in the long run, since the delay incurred for each hop can be greatly reduced when you can receive and transmit at the same time.
