I'm not going to make it there at 8:30pm but if folks are meeting up ping me on IRC and I could drop by a bit later :)

Marc, I've switched to http://wiki.tidepools.co as I continue research for OTI, so will need to update the pyre wiki as we move forward. The mesh protocol/hardware/firmware etc research is in the Mesh Projects Directory link on the sidebar. :)

I will be at sudo tomorrow since there's an Oakland Digital Divide mtg at 7 and will be meeting with Alcides beforehand. Mark, if you can't make it that's fine - I would love to hear Doctorow speak, myself! We'll see who shows up and go from there.

As part of my internship with the Open Technology Institute, I'm designing use cases for a mobile mapping application designed to run on community mesh networks. While discussions of the technology that mesh runs on are interesting and pertinent, so too is the issue of community adoption and engagement. There's a whole world of possibilities for providing services beyond just connectivity to folks on the mesh -mapping community resources, neighborhood bulletin boards for local job listings and events, hooking up with sensor data from seismometers and Geiger counters, community crime watch, emergency response tools, etc;

Excited to talk more with y'all tomorrow!

One of these days, hackers need to start boycotting proprietary broadcom hardware - including raspberry pi!  otherwise we'll never arrive at the open hardware future :)

Hi. I bumped into the three protocols about the same time along my journey. Didnt really explore babel as much as the other two. Later noticed WDS and a roster of others, but like you implied, these three were most popular.

I was trying to steer clear of DD-WRT for the reason you stated about open source. But OpenWrt seems to be at a standstill when it comes to Linksys e2000 because of Broadcom proprietary mumbo jumbo... ;)

I thought about Tomatoes but that seems like a world of worlds... Im still trying to get adjusted to linux (debian flavors).

Thanks for the link. I love links! :) I look forward to meeting folks.

There are several other protocols out there. The main one I'm seeing
in use other than OLSR and batman-adv is Babel. Babel is apparently
really easy to work with. I asked the Project Byzantium people why
they chose it, and they said there was only one reason: simplicity of
deployment.

Jenny and I have gathered some relevant facts about meshing protocols
here: http://thepyre.org/wiki/Mesh#Meshing_protocols_and_algorithms

Cool. Maybe you already know this, but DD-WRT is not really open
source / free software. There are add-in modules that they want you to
pay for, and it's apparently very difficult to compile from source. I
tried using it once, and ran into a showstopper when I realized
there's no way to disable console output on the primary serial port
(meaning you can't use it for anything else).

I'm also ok either way.
