Hello hello!

Alcides, thanks for those notes! We should totally endorse Battlemesh (as 510pen, and maybe sudo room also?)

Mark, I talked with Praveen the other day and he is totally down to buy a router for syncing LOL with 510pen.

Praveen, let us know if/when you get the router, and we can send out a field team to do the install and move the Bikery's router to the roof. Link: http://www.open-mesh.com/index.php/products/access-points/om2p.html

\o/ mesh the planet!! \o/

Howdy folks, is anyone available to do more work on mesh router installation in the next couple of weeks?  I unfortunately will be out of town, but it would be awesome if folks have time to work on it before I get back...

Current situation: someone who lives upstairs from SOL is not getting very good connectivity. We need to move the existing mesh router at the bikery annex up onto the roof for better coverage. And we should also setup another mesh router at LOL (or SOL would work too).

We need someone to buy the additional mesh router - $75 http://www.open-mesh.com/index.php/products/access-points/om2p.html is what we have at the bikery annex and seems to be pretty reliable.  Not sure who "someone" is - I don't know if LOL would be interested in buying hardware or we need to raise funds somehow.

Awesome notes! I'd like to add a few...

Battlemesh is looking for endorsements (not only money) by other groups involved in mesh-type projects. More info at bottom.ALSO, Battlemesh is expected to run from April 17th-21st, if I'm not mistaken. There is a mailing list if anyone is interested in jumping on it. battlemesh@ninux.org

Battlemesh also has a collection of videos and pictures online. http://www.battlemesh.org - If I get the cash, I'm going, but I definitely want to interview some attendees. Check out the agenda: http://battlemesh.org/BattleMeshV6/Agenda

For OpenWRT compatible routers by specs check out http://wiki.openwrt.org/meta/tags

I heard that ath9k (open source) based routers are best and that you really can't pick a bad one: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k/products/APs

If you end up flashing with OpenWRT, you might want to look into captive portals so that a device connecting will be forwarded to an introductory page about what they've gotten themselves into.

Kickstarter sounds like an awesome option to fund the purchase of routers for neighborhoods patch by patch. If you worked a budget niceley it could keep costs down and increase the chances of meeting the minimum goal requirements. Isn't there a crowdfunding group at sudo?

Okay, I'm out y'all. Gotta finish up this first 15-minute video in the series, "The Future is Mesh"

Rad meeting tonight! Here are notes, which shall be cross-posted to the wiki: http://sudoroom.org/wiki/Mesh

=Action Items=
==Immediate==
*OpenITP Grant - throw in your thoughts! - https://pad.riseup.net/p/510penITPapp - due March 31st
*Market research on 4MB routers that will run OpenWRT
*Juul will research binoculars and send info to Mark  (carryover item)
*Testing with satellite dishes - in sudo room next week! (after the main meeting)

==Longer Term==
*Send out map and work on it
*Update website
**Commenting on nodes (Revent, Tidepools)
*Come up with a handout for going door-to-door

=Attendees=
Jenny, Miguel, Mark B, Bill, Jordan, with some OaklandWiki meshing ;D,

=Notes=
*How the site works:
**Create an account and put in the MAC address of the mesh router
**Allows us to build a list of all the routers on the network
*openmesh firmware runs a shell script when first installed, connects to openmesh.org and our own instance, 510pen, is recognized and fed directly to the router
*How the portal currently works:
**Pushes the HTML to openmesh.com if it updates
*How the portal could work:
**Data source on the mesh, some IP, every router could use static pages  (using javascript restful endpoints)
*We should get more routers! 8MB preferably, 4MB might work
*We'd need more CPU - WRT4GL's should work - CPU can easily be maxed out depending on size of the mesh
*Installing fibre along International Blvd - a highspeed access point would make it worthwhile to shoot across the city
*Research fibre in East Oakland
*Mesh nodes for GSM
*RanchWiFi - Solar ISP - Matt's connection
*Sudo GSM! We use all the protocols at sudo!!
*Old Sonic routers??
**Opt-in with Sonic? - Dane Jasper
*Should we abandon OpenMesh and flash routers with our own firmware? At the very least, we should field test the firmwares out there.
*OpenMesh used to use OLSR, and is proud to have switched to batman-adv
*802.11s - mesh standard - what's the deal?
*BattleMesh!!! 4/20 in Denmark - we should keep tabs on how that pans out. Or.. go?

=Reportbacks=
*Jenny followed up in #oti on weatherproof equipment Ubiquiti equipments
*Jenny and Mark B presented 510pen at Open Oakland.
*Follow up with Tony on Cisco connection - "how many routers do you need?" he asked at Open Oakland meeting. Mark's answer, "ideally, one in every other house."
*Bill did not flash the router ;) but his Coursera course is ending soon!

Jenny
