Thanks to the hard work of Tracy at Media Alliance and others in the consortium, the Oakland Internet Choice Initiative is finally making it to a public Oakland City Council meeting!

If you have time on Tuesday, and care about protecting people's choice of ISP, it could mean a lot to leave a short public comment. Or, if you just want to tune in and listen and get a sense of how local politics in Oakland works, this is an opportunity!

From Tracy:

Tuesday is the big day. At the Oakland City Council meeting, we will have the first reading of the Oakland Internet Choice ordinance.

OICC is the last item on the action calendar, but the meeting will be taking public comment at the front of the agenda, so all that you need to do is call or zoom in at 1:30pm on Tuesday and indicate a desire to speak when they call for public comment for items on the agenda. It seems likely comments will be short, so be prepared for one minute.

Greenlining and myself will have to hang in until the end of the meeting, but you don't have to!

Here is the information:

The oakland internet choice initiative is picking up speed!

The Oakland Internet Choice Coalition (OICC) is organizing to provide a legal path requiring landlords of large multi-tenant buildings to allow any qualified Internet service provider to serve their tenants.

Oakland City Council President Rebecca Kaplan is looking for community support in the next couple of months.

If you live in Oakland, read more about it and send her an email:

I think passing this ordinance is going to be a really important step to support independent ISPs in their fight against the big monopolies.
