I am also using a Mac and see the same behavior. It is my understanding that the captive portal browser window does not have an address bar by design. 

Adding a target attribute to the "Go to internet" button can trigger peoplesopen.net to be open in a normal (default) browser window instead of the chromless captive portal window opened by the os. 

Perhaps the "Go to internet" button would open peoplesopen.net in the users default browser and then close itself. 

What do you guys think?

Details: Today about 9am when turning on a macbook it automatically connected to PeoplesOpen.net network and presented me with the splash page, without the URL address area which at this stage is okay.  So, so far so good. -But, after I clicked on go to the Internet link it forwarded me to the sudomesh.org website but without providing me with the area to type any URL. -The address area appeared only after clicking on a link in the sudomesh.org webpage.

I hope someone else can check this behavior, just to double check.

I enabled the "garden gnome" on the production exit server. What this should do is trigger certain operating system's network connectivity probes so that they'll show a splash page when people join the network. It's designed to be as minimally intrusive as possible, so it only captures probes to the specific urls that OSX/iOS/Android/Windows test to see if they're connected to the internet.

Once a user clicks "go to the internet", that IP will be added to a white list so they won't see the splash page again for 24 hours.
