I'll be glad to talk for 5 minutes about my home automation stuff... I can
talk about raspberry pis, auto-wifi raspian, xbee radios, wemos D1mini
radios, node-red, MQTT, graphite/grafana, hubot/rocket.chat, and the tedium
of it all... ;)

Is there a white board upon which I can draw a rudimentary diagram?

Yes! Or we can hook up a webcam pointed at a blank piece of paper to the
projector and you can use sharpies :)
