Ryan, I couldn't find any emails to LC from you re: public terminals in the space. I'm very sorry if I missed something or perhaps there were non-digital communications that did not bear fruit.

I'm not in a position to make any decisions with regards to this, just wanted to make it clear that I was not in any way intentionally ignoring any inquiries from you in the past!

I hope everyone can come to an agreeable solution.

This was well before they were taking a hiatus, unfortunately. But if they're not going to be open for a significant amount of time, I think it's reasonable to just find a space and if they decide it's not functional when they open, we can reevaluate from there.

I'm also concerned about folks using the computer if it's available, rather than going upstairs, but I'm just really concerned about walking folks who can't go upstairs.

Ok gotcha. We do have a handful of usb keyboards that we could set up to stay connected to one of the netbooks. Or we could use the laptop that Uprising has mentioned they're going to bring over.

I think that Lubuntu probably has the same accesibility features, but I'll double check.

In the past, I've had trouble getting La Commune to get back at all about public terminals, which is why I'm frustrated and done trying to deal with them.

Yeah and it does seem like they're taking a "hiatus". Perhaps we could just move forward with what we see as a decent plan and assume that we'll all be ok with eachother moving forwards in good faith.

The average desk/table is about the right height for a wheelchair user, so I'm confused as to why we'd need to have it brought down or use a standing desk.

The only reason that Daniel and I were considering a folding down option was to discourage folks from using it as a default instead of walking upstairs to the terminals. It seems that people are sometimes drawn to the closest monitor, and so they might be just immediately drawn to a computer setup in La Commune. But just a thought.

I know stock Ubuntu has most necessary accessibility software. I don't know if lubuntu would. I assume so. I might want to look into it more deeply.

Daniel and I were talking about maybe some sort of appropriate height desk which would be able to fold down and then up and that would have a laptop just permanently mounted to it. The somewhat obscurity of it paired with some signage mentioning that there are plenty of terminals upstairs and to please reserve this for folks who wouldn't otherwise be able to access the other terminals.

We have a ton of laptops btw - they're in storage under the stairs in omni. Most of them need keyboard replacements (like $15 I think), but some of them I believe are good to go. Just need someone to set up a mini station. I would imagine it should be cleared with the La Commune folks, although I have a feeling they'd be on board.

I don't have a ton of cycles to build anything like that, but I'm wondering if there's a stopgap solution that we could use - maybe just hide one of the laptops somewhere around the La Commune Desk with a notice on it? Would one of the netbooks with stock lubuntu installed on it be ok?

Ryan, do you have any particular preferences for next steps?

Also - I'm not super familiar with any other accessibility software, but if someone pointed me in the right direction, I think it's probably a good idea for all of our terminals to have a base set installed.

That would be so amazing. Thank you so much.

If you could put a note on it saying that it's for accessible public use so it doesn't immediately disappear into a project, that would be rad.

So, have you found a place where we should work on?

Or/and, would you like me to see if I can set the computer you were using (or another) below the desk as I mentioned it to you, so that the display its a better eye level?

Ryan, I think the ideal would be to have one or two workstations near the entrance; but if not possible, then Jenny's idea sounds the best, imho.

What do you think?
