I wonder if this is an extension of what got started a couple of years ago, Ralf from the Internet Archive, and the one guy that works for the city that manages all the fibre were driving it and had started to work out a way to roll out a network with Ubiquiti gear along Market. It was a pretty libre project without any real over site or commercial interests.

From the symposium...
After hearing from community Wi-Fi speakers, a team will be formed to create a free wifi network in the Tenderloin and around Mid-Market. The team will use San Francisco's 1 GB community broadband network and low cost wireless hardware to expand access. We will present our work directly to all nine major mayoral candidates at our final public forum in October. Our goal is to establish a new paradigm where the community co-creates the network with local government.

Thanks for bringing this up Jeremy. This story has been banging around in my head since it was announced. I'm wondering how much it cost, what kind of advertising might be involved (I haven't tried it), and if there might be some messaging opportunity here. Along the lines of:

In San Francisco, taxpayers just spent a lot of money to provide to light up a limited area, with a service that bombards you with ads. In Oakland, we have a different vision. Why put a burden on our strained City budget, or the time of our elected leaders? Why limit wifi access to a certain, economically preferred part of town? Do we have the ability to offer free, or inexpensive, connectivity to the Internet, or to one another at least, for Oakland residents? Yeah? Well, let's do it! Join us!

I took a picture of a paper the other day. Maybe we should add a node to Market Street. :)
