Hydraulic bike brakes cost just a bit more for the to me impressive benefits.
Go-kart parts may also be something to draw on.

pros - can see the load, no need for differential, use existing drivetrain w/o modification

pros - clear view ahead, load acts as crash cushion against road rage cars, feel like a trucker
cons - complicated drivetrain involving a differential, cannot see if passengers are misbehaving


Either way, it would be sweet to build a modular cargo/pedicab platform.  Maybe a 4x8 version to start - that's one sheet of plywood.  A buddy in austin wanted to build some pedicabs and mentioned that for left/right brakes it might be better to use hydraulics so you don't have cable lengths to deal with, just distributing pressure in brake lines.
