Don't Miss the Night of Ideas!
Saturday, April 5, 2025
Afternoon of Ideas: 4–7 p.m.
Night of Ideas: 7 p.m.–1 a.m.
The Bay Area’s biggest celebration of creativity and critical thought returns to the Main Library, and we are excited to announce that this year, the festivities will extend across Fulton Plaza to the Asian Art Museum! The sixth annual Night of Ideas brings together an array of local cultural organizations, leading thinkers and artists to contemplate a future for city life that is more just, culturally vibrant and sustainable.
This year’s theme “(un)Common Ground” explores the vital role of civil society in mediating our differences and charting a shared destiny. It challenges us to reconsider the values that form the foundation of our communities—whether territorial, social, or emotional—and how we can repair our social fabric amid increasing polarization.
The night is packed with local luminaries and creative minds — including AI trailblazer Luc Julia, chef Francis Ang, graphic novelist Maia Kobabe, journalist Ray Suarez, environmental designer Nick Polansky, public intellectual Jeane Proust, dance maker Sarah Crowell, San Francisco's Chief of Housing and Economic Development Ned Segal and so many more!
More festive sub-themes celebrate the diversity of mobile creativity and the Bay Area’s culture of art on wheels. Explore custom lowriders from Dueñas Car Club, Burning Man art cars and SFPL's Bookmobile on Fulton Plaza and take a tour of SFPL's exhibition Skateboarding San Francisco with co-curator Ted Barrow.
Throughout the night, browse a Small Business Marketplace featuring local artisans and experience the grand unveiling of the SPECTRA Public Light Sculpture on Fulton Plaza. And the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will put camp and whimsy into arts and craft with their Sister Sock Puppet Workshop and a Bohemian Rhapsody lip-sync finale in the Library’s Atrium
The night’s conclusion invites attendees to boogie down at SF Discothèque, presented by Friends of the SFPL & Value Culture, with DJ Beatific spinning beats in the Library’s atrium disco ball.
We’re thrilled to bring back the Afternoon of Ideas, a family program ahead of the main event welcoming younger generations to participate in crafts, performances and workshops with award-winning children’s book authors, artists and educators. Highlights include Tito Ramon's Pop-up Puppet Show, Drag Story Hour with Per Sia, a Chair Ballet Workshop by San Francisco Ballet and hands-on art experiences like a Lego Printing by Arion Press, a Draw-Off with Illustrators Sendy Santamaria & Ana RamĂrez González and reading and writing workshop with YA author Nina Lacour.
Join SFPL, KQED, the Asian Art Museum and the Villa Albertine San Francisco, along with artistic curating partner Circuit Network, for another inspiring marathon of talks, performances, food, art and collective imagination!
Before the event, registrants will receive an email with further event details. Stay tuned and see you there!
