Nm. I just had to push harder.

Does someone have the key to this room? It's locked. I'm here and had planned to work in there tonight. We also need to get in there tomorrow morning.

Okie doke.
So.
I spoke the alleged permissor, and according to them, the squatter indeed lied about having been given the go ahead, and dropped their name by way of a mutual friend or somesuch situation.
I'm also very glad to say, that my worries were hasty and misinformed.
The squatter in question is the bald and scruffled, 40-to-50-year-old black man, who often hangs out on the exterior steps of the ballroom entryway.
It's unclear exactly how he got in, but what is clear is that we need to step up our game by discussing all the ideas offered above.

Now I really am going to sleep.

I hope to dream that all of you are my familial elms, that our trunks are made of space elevators, and that our roots are made of billions of microscopic hedgehogs. And the hedgehogs are rowing canoes, of course.

If the situation is what I think, I feel we ought to give as much support as we can to our friend.
However, I do think we ought to be strict on our tolerance level for abuse of any kind; space, place, object, and of course person.
Perhaps a breakout session is due for anyone who isn't already aware of how to deal with agressive or threatening people. Especially for lone situations.
Perhaps we ought to even start spending ten mins of the delegates meeting, revisiting the table of contents of our spankin new Conflict Resolution guidelines, every few or four weeks?

And it's semi-off-topic, but this quote really snapped me out of some lame situations,
"Theres never a good reason to light yourself on fire in order to keep someone else warm".
Just food for thought.
Omni can be a place where everyone is welcome to exist, dance, hack, cook, heal, build, etc. But if we don't feel comfortable and safe with each other, that can't last long.

I dunno. I'm exhausted and gufflebrained, and I've lost my train of thought.

Good night everyone,
Have a good day :)

I appreciate your consideration and compassion.

I also want our community to be aware of potentially aggressive individuals - especially if they run into them alone, in the wee hours.

It's a delicate balance, for sure, between respecting an individual's privacy and ensuring the safety of the community.

Thanks for being so awesome, Korl <3

I don't feel comfortable at this time describing the squatter, nor mentioning the alleged permissors name, until I've had a chance to gather info on said alleged permission.
I feel that the situation is potentially an insight to a serious personal matter of one our members, and I want to make sure it's potential gravity is given due appreciation.
As soon as I have the facts, I'll be sure to update the thread.
But to be sure, no it was not Quickness.

Thanks guys. I often stay up ll night and occasionally use the solo hours to get work done at sudo. I came in to do my and the omnis dishes, as well as snag some wifi to download a hardware testing software. I was certainly not expecting to find mr. rando there.

I think you've got it spot on. The more collaboration we have between last-outs and first-ins, respectively, the more effective we can be. I feel like there's too much disconnect in areas like this, and so the process is taken for granted. But if we look at whats already been discussed, analyzed, and implimented, it's already all there.

Ben has been so kind as to offer to add this to the delegates agenda, and if I can make it to the meeting I'll certainly be there.
I honestly think the key is as simple as us Omnerds acting just a bit more in sync with eachother. How we find the best pactice of preventing issues like this one, is just a matter of getting everyone on the same page, really.
Hive mentality! Buddy system! Robot super brain! Gaia info waves!

To be clear, I locked up with Marc, Matt, and Noemie last night and we went throughout the building asking non-members to leave and shutting off lights. I'm often among the last to leave with other sudoers and we always buddy up. Korl came back in the wee hours cuz she's a weirdo ;)

Matt wrote this thing, we should update and improve it!

Yes, thanks so much, Korl.

How do you think we could prevent this problem in the future? It's going to happen more and more frequently, I'm afraid.

Partly, we'll have to be more adamant about keeping our doors locked "after-hours" and being certain that folks who are coming in are coming for a specific purpose and not to just linger around and sleep. Also, we should probably develop a more systematic closing-up procedure that must include some sort of buddy-system for closing up. It seems foolish to leave one person alone to confront someone and ask them to leave the space.

Darn, and we were so proud of getting everyone to leave and locking up Omni last night! Didn't think to check that little room, but will add it to the rounds.

A good reminder for folks who leave Omni late to check in with other members before you go - it's best to coordinate leaving and lock down with a small pack of trusted friends. Thanks for taking care of this solo, Korl. It's no fun :/

For the record, I'm fine.
I told him what the house rule on sleeping was, that it was unfortunate that this person gave him false information, that I hoped he found somewhere else to go, but not to come back to Omni looking or a place to crash.
He was a little agro, made some fuss about a few things, and gave me a bunch of gruffy attitude, but he left on his bike.

This was no big thing, but I'd like to resolve the cause of the situation, and also bring my concern to the table on locked doors.
The squatter had locked himself in the eyeball room, and in any case, anyone who locks up the building, half asleep or otherwise, might not even bother to knock.
Or if a squatter simply stayed silent, the person locking up might very well just pass it over and chalk it up to the room being locked by it's steward.
Basically, if we want to keep this from happening again, the current process isn't working.

There is an older man whi has set camp in the eyeball room upstairs. He was quite upset when I told him he was not allowed to sleep here - that no one is, and that isnt what the omni is for.
He claims hes been given permission to sleep here. I've asked him to leave and am now watching over while he gathers his things to leave.
Does anyone know about this?
