still sounds like a lot of top down stuff to me...boring.

The edX platform is open: http://code.edx.org/

edX has partnered with Google to build out MOOC.org, a place for people to host courses built in Open edX: https://www.edx.org/press/edx-announces-partnership-google-expand

"In collaboration with Google, edX will build out and operate MOOC.org, a new site for non-xConsortium universities, institutions, businesses, governments and teachers to build and host their courses for a global audience. This site will be powered by the jointly developed Open edX platform."

Searching indicates a lot of interest in "Github for education resources", but less in the way of concrete projects.
There's Coursefork, still in alpha after two years: http://opensource.com/education/13/9/coursefork-education-tool

For particular subject areas, there is some good stuff out there.

The UC Davis CHEMWiki is extensive: http://chemwiki.ucdavis.edu/
UMich has a pretty nice process controls wiki: https://controls.engin.umich.edu

I'm sure there is a database of all of these open education resources somewhere!

thx 4 linx & $.02. maybe i should have said "Building Education from the Underground up". Most curricula is developed in a top down fashion with relatively few contributors...kinda like close source software. i'm wishing for wiki, git, etc projects in which the general public can contribute content, comment, like-dislike, etc.
i'm not seeing enough lessons on hacking, sustainability, political organizing, alternative health...you know, the stuff *we* want people to know.

amplifying what exists, creating a platform for people to collaborate & develop more & analyzing what works is what i'm getting at.

i admit, i haven't done my all my homework. perhaps it already exists, in which case, i want to get involved in some of the projects :-)

Great idea, lots of people have the same idea and are doing it -- in a massive way:

Free Open Source Education (FOSE - acronym apparently recently ditched by US Gov)

Building education from the ground up.

Online organization to develop and maintain free open source educational tools and server space to share them.

Top-down education sucks. We can do it better.

?
