US Services totalled $561 billion in 2008... private services (which include financial services) at around $241 billion USD. Royalties and license fees are $91.1 billion (whoa! no wonder the SOPA folks are so excited. that's big money)

Capital goods were our biggest goods exports, at $469 bilion USD. So I was wrong, sorry about that!

This is from 2008... wonder how much has changed?

I'm confused why a chart of US exports would not include our services. we are a service economy right now despite all the uptick in manufacturing.

wow I'm surprised. There are a lot of manufactured goods in there.

From what i heard the US actually has an export surplus but most of it is in stuff like financial services and other high-value business services. I was under the impression that taking away our financial system would leave us with a huge deficit.

Here is a fascinating resource relevant to such questions that I just came across, the Atlas of Economic Complexity; containing e.g. categorized US exports in 2010:

Good question, Anthony:  what do people give up to get money?

Also: what do people give up to get convenience?

And: when is the tradeoff _not worth it_ or _a bad deal_?

I'm kind of into this trading-money-to-get-time idea someone came up
