don't apologize for ranting, I think it's necessary to have these kinds of candid conversations.

One of the ongoing, hard-work aspects of maintaining a true Commons IMO is that I think it's important to presume good intentions on the part of every newcomer to the space, even if they are wrong, misinformed, or prove (as all such people always eventually will) to not have them.

We can save ourselves some of this quotidian labor by signage, though as with Joel's signs we should aggregate as much info per sign as is legible in about 15 seconds so we don't done day have too too many signs everywhere (lest we give an impression of being in a space ruled by too many imperatives and prohibitions..although we are presently pretty far away from that end if the spectrum to be sure! :)

I think that the majority of white america is mostly ignorant of these realities, and that it would be a good idea to make a poster that explains it, in plain english, so that good-intentioned people can be informed.

I don't think the suggestion to summon police would have been made by someone aware of these issues.  I think that the most direct route to awareness will be signs, posters and flyers, directed toward people who should know better, but don't.

Of course it's the duty of the privileged to educate themselves, but as a community of people who are in possession of this knowledge, we should do what we can to make sure newcomers to our community are informed of this important issue, to prevent a repeating pattern of ignorant accidents.

I assume the Material Print Machine or one of the many giant laser printers at sudoroom are up to the task of reproducing a well-worded primer on police brutality and police reality.

I guess it sums it up:

If OPD sees a black man sleeping in a car, they shoot him.

If you are white and ask them to protect the property you leave in your car, they might do it.
Because they've proved that they care more about your property than they do about a black life.

The question is, do you want to be complicit to that?

Is that issue something we could include in our safe space policy? Is there a need to carve it in stone somewhere in the building? I'll do whatever is
needed to make it a thing: OPD friendly discourse is really, really NOT OK. It's offensive and threatening to the people who are from Oakland, to the
people here who get harrassed on a daily basis, to the people here who dedicate, sometimes sacrifice their lives to the struggle for dignity and their
basic human rights.

+1 to yar and daniel. I'm pretty upset right now.

So, let's be clear. If you come from far to be at the Omni, then be aware that you are arriving in a city where a lot of people suffer from
poverty, racism and police brutality. Don't be a gentrifier. If you want your valuable belongings to be safe, then don't leave them in your
      car.
And don't ask the cops to protect your property.
They killed another black man, the father of a friend, a few days ago. He was sleeping in his car. OPD has invited 10 FBI agents to join
their troop. The pigs are not our friends, and it's not funny. If you don't notice it, then I invite you to put yourself in the shoes of
      someone with less than you.

SERIOUSLY, this is not a joke.
Police do NOT care about Black and Brown people.
And IF there were good cops they will be arresting all those racist killer cops.

COPS are armed and HIGHLY DANGEROUS, specially toward people with out White Privilege.

And the more you talk, the more they learn about you and your friends.

Why not to talk to Police Officers:

Just for the record, I've lived in Oakland almost a decade, I've
