Thanks for the realism Cere!

I think contests and hackathons can be fun, but so many of them are heavily corporate. Is there anything that wouldn't be a big turnoff to hackers?

I guess a non-profit or "for the good of humanity" deal would be cool. I know when people work on SudoMesh there is a strong "Yeah I'm doing this for the good of humanity" feeling.

Porftolio Competition

Feeling Good for Finishing Stuff Reward

I dunno, good ideas!

I just want to a note sobering note of realism around this fantastic conversation.  I think one of the reasons why we don’t see more project based work at both spaces is that people are just struggling to finish whatever project earns them money from day to day.  I think we could really get more people involved if there was some promise of personal fame or fortune.  Just because it’s “open” doesn’t mean there can’t be prize money.  So what cool contests should we consider entering?

Thanks for the advice Patrik!

Something tells me that a group-led project might not work so well at SudoRoom. I hope someone can prove me wrong!

Sudomesh seems to do pretty well though! That's an excellent example of the kind of team projects I was suggesting. (If it were up to me, I would have SudoMesh meet *in* Sudo Room though, rather than treating it as a completely separate spinoff project)

It's is a big benefit that CCL/BioCurious have more "restrictions" around biohacking. You don't have to be on a computer to do it, and it does require specialized laboratory equipment.

Not sure I understand why you consider that a benefit,or more conducive to team projects. And note that there are plenty of purely bioinformatics or software-based projects that CCL could be working on as well. It's just that nobody has taken the initiative of creating a group project around that so far.
