Hey everyone--have any of you heard of the San Jose SubZero festival?

It's Friday, June 7th and celebrates the underground. think mexigoths, fire sculptures, rockabilly bands and skaters and street art!

Yes--I know it's weird.. it's San Jose! we all have a lot of ideas about San Jose. I was there for about two years and the people running the subzero are very legit. Despite the high rents, fairly cookie cutter atmosphere cherri + brian from anno domini have been keeping the underground alive... they also run the $5 for art tuesdays and support low cost local events by local artists down there.

cherri isn't making money off this--none of her crew is. they break even every year...

if anyone is interested in carpoling with me down to san jose to have a table or do some crazy art projection experiment, let me know. I'll be chatting with people about this.
san jose is highly suburban and has especially high rent prices, some parts worse than san francisco. the arts have a tough ttime down there, despite a nice downtown layout and a university.

subzero festival makes things easier... they were asking if we wanted to do a game/play/experiemnt.

it's in june... so would love to get in conversation with folks about this now!

SubZERO Festival: First Friday June 7th., 6pm-midnight

Hi! It's time for our annual convergence of all you Progenitors of Culture!

It's been a very tough year for everyone, and yet, here we all still are....we have not wavered in our determination to be who we are, to live the life we dream of and build the city we want to live in.

The 6th Annual SubZERO Festival is one of the most amazing celebrations of the indie,  DIY, subculture and counter culture experiences and it's because of YOU and we want you back this year! Your participation shows you don't just "do" art, but you ARE an artist and you're in it for a long term life and career. We have had many success stories result from the festival - we've had participants use the momentum of the fan base they've cultivated from SubZERO to launch their own brick & mortar store fronts of their own, works of art are in homes of collectors and artists have been invited into other active collectives, indie entrepreneurs have had their product  picked up by big retail brands and the festival has served as a catalyst for artists to receive national/international inquiries to show and perform.

And don't underestimate that the crowd will be "the same" - San Jose is notorious for new surges of residents from all over the world to work in the tech industry we're known for (and seems to be flourishing once again) and these new comers experience the perception that we're a cultural wasteland....NOT TRUE and this festival changes those perceptions immediately but we can only change those perceptions if you're out there to show them!

That's what we do....we create and inspire and thrive. And we do it TOGETHER.

-----------------------------------------   2013 SubZERO Festival Information  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's our annual gathering of the Progenitors of Culture otherwise known as the Sixth Annual SubZERO Festival

Focused on emerging and present subcultures thriving in our region, SubZERO is a DIY, artistically bent, hi/lo-techno mashup where street meets geek.

You're receiving this first round of invitations because we are grateful to you for your past participation. You've helped build the festival into a highly anticipated celebration of subculture artists, performers & creative indie businesses. You've been here all day, every day, all year long doing what you know to be the most challenging thing in your life but you do it with determination and uncompromising values. This is the night we get to share that work and know that there are others that appreciate it, get inspired by it and want to connect with it. You push the arts, culture and humanity forward, and so "thank you!" in advance for not just this one event, but for all that you do always.

Like last year, this festival is DIY....We all bring it to make it happen.

Vendor spaces will be the standard 10' x 10'. You'll need to bring everything you'll need to exhibit, display, perform and/or sell your work. We highly encourage live painting, demos and /or participatory activities with your audience. (please let us know what you have in mind if it involves sound or roving performances, etc.)

-Ellectricity (via generators) will be provided.
- One artist / entity per booth
