I figured as much, but given the use of grand juries in the past, I think it's safer to have that specifically stated. Even if it was implied by the subsequent questions.

Just warning people about using vague language that could be used against them (or a group of people) later.

No problem, Max. Glad to help. I haven't found any on-line scanners for
OPD/BPD/etc that work after the change. So they're going to have to buy
a new scanner. You could piece one together with a DVB but YMMV.

My question about goals was directed towards a technological goal and
not a philosophical / political goal.

Thanks a lot for all of the responses.

It looks like P25 scanners are available, just a little pricey. Thanks
for all the info Kurt.

I looked through the hackaday link and the associated article, but I'm
not sure that route is going to be a reliable option unless someone (me)
takes a bunch of time to do the proper research and a lot of setup.
We'll see....

The use of "goal" on this mailing list (in regard to police) isn't
appropriate.

I'm pretty sure Kurt meant the goals of copwatch - you might want to
re-read that sentence.

As for copwatch's goals, I think they're looking for something on their
desk to monitor/listen. It might be a useful option to record. I don't
believe they need something portable - usually there's someone in the
office while other folks are out on the streets.

Thanks!

The new system is P25, a universal emergency services digital system so
there are quite a few scanners available. I'm not really up-to-date with
scanners but what is their goal? Have something on their desk to
monitor/listen? Record to wav/mp3? Portability?

Hey folks,

Berkeley Copwatch is in need of a new police radio scanner! It
seems
that the police department has switched frequencies/gone digital
and
their old scanner doesn't work anymore.

Does anyone know anything about police radio/scanners and would
want to
have a conversation with me about them? Anyone know anything about
some
of the sdr options available and whether or not we could
realistically
hack something that would be effective?

Any help is great!
