Berkeley does provide access to non-students for their electron microscope. http://em-lab.berkeley.edu/EML/index.php

I would love for us to have an electron microscope at some point, but I think we need to continue to buildup our capabilities first. Without training, money for maintenance and skilled calibration the microscope wouldn't be very useful for us.

Well, we've already had a chance to get a free EM twice before. Things didn't quite work out those times, but I would not be surprised if we got another opportunity some time down the road. Maybe we'll be better prepared at that time.

For those who are really in need of some EM time, you might want to cultivate some contacts at the Molecular Foundry at Berkeley...

I for one would be super interested in this, especially for our plant cuticle/epidermis and chloroplast manipulations, and general curiosities of course. Pollen photography is also a thing.

$15k is bonkers but seems like the going rate. Wish there was a way you could just rent time to use one.

I also hear EMs are getting smaller and more affordable in general... Let's hope. If that's true then may be smart to wait it out.

Welp now they're selling what looks to be the same instrument:
