Yes I will be there too on tuesday. The other CNC mill is on permanent loan, and we can do whatever we want to it, however I recommend against putting too much effort into it because it is such an extremely cheap thing that you might be wasting your time.
its bed has a number of threaded holes (6-32 thread) so clamps/holders can just be things with holes in them, and a better assortment of various length 6/32 screws, or pieces of 6-32 threaded rod, washers, and nuts or wingnuts.
If you have energy to improve CNC machines it will go much further with the nice one (which is located in the center of the room, on the border between CCL and sudoroom) or perhaps even on the giant robot, which is actually a CNC machine itself in the sense that you can give it a job in XYZ coordinates (g-code through a converter) and it can weild whatever tools you mount on its hand.

Into it! I'll be around for Tuesday hack night, hopefully using the other CNC mill, we should talk then. And in fact, in
related discussion, I'd wanted to make a plan for better clamps/holders the other CNC. If I remember right, that was on
long term loan, can we make improvements to it?

does anyone want to get together and get the really really nice CNC machine working?
we have a CNC machine with about a 500x500mm work area which is made to microscopic precision. we could
literally machine microfluidics with it.
the controller it came with is really old, and runs Windows 95, and doesn't allow us to load gcode or
anything comparable, and afaik can't be reformed.
the good news is - we have a Mesa Electronics 5i23 board which is supported by LinuxCNC and would make a
great replacement controller!
so if anyone wants to get this CNC machine going, let me know and we can discuss steps toward that.

hi folks,
looks like the spindle needs to be tightened a little bit but it's working! i brought in
some tooling,
enough to make cuts and learn. anyone interested in using it can easily learn the basics
of lathe operations
and how to grind lathe bits online before operating. this lathe is also capable of cutting
threads - just
swap out gears as indicated on the inside cover of the gearbox and use an appropriate
60-degree bit. the
lathe and all the tooling I brought in are a donation to the space but once there's a place
for the tooling
I'll grab the toolbox back.
Awesome! I was playing with it the other day. This is a great addition to sudo and the perfect
size lathe for our current
space!
