I would also suggest that a nice place to start is maybe this ADA Initiative Allies Workshop. There are two coming up in the beginning of march, the 7th and 11th. $200-Free sliding scale:

I watched a video of a past workshop and it was really useful. I didn't realize about how you make somebody aware that you don't like their sexist behaviour and then drop it and move on. They also mentioned about how to utilize "Charle's rules for arguments" to not get too involved in arguing. Your allow to make your point, and one clarification, and then you don't argue any more. http://fishbowl.pastiche.org/2004/03/21/charles_rules_of_argument/

Tossing my hat in!  Been wanting to start men's feminist circle myself.  I wonder if we can make this a skype call in or something.  <3    Also, just read this great little MVC essay which makes me think about hackerspace interactions a lot  http://modelviewculture.com/pieces/ceo-archetypes-7-joan-of-arc

Thanks Jenny for the cc, (Hi Tom), and that sounds like a great first agenda item for this little cluster, easily done on the sudo room wiki or Noisebridge wiki, or both.

Something that might be fruitful is creating a list of resources and readings that are more easily digestible by geek men in particular, and of course humans in general. I'm cc'ing Tom from Noisebridge, who's been organizing a feminist book group for men at Noisebridge over the past couple of months.

But let's also meet and talk, I think it will be fruitful. Please share your availability on this calendar, and we'll start a little weekly meeting group. I favor Mondays in case folks have similar interests:

As I see it - or perhaps I am wanting to see it this way - this Men's group's purpose would be to combat mindlessly performing inculcated patriarchal motions. And in the process of de-conditioning yourself as a "man", becoming a convincing, subtle and non-naggy argument for other men to do the same. Slowly doing what we can do restore a gender equitable society, from our side (while knowing that we can't do it ourselves, that's the sort of thinking that got us here in the first place).

So a thousand yeses to all of the above. But how do we do it? In person meetings? Too self selecting. Online? Not visible enough. Making a charter? Toothless. Doing volunteer work? Pointless doting.

Here's my suggestion, and I'm open to more. Be radical sudo men.
Do your dishes, and smash the platetriarchy.

Great idea and I'm in if we can keep the time commitment relatively light

Hey all,

Positive responses at the weekly meeting. I started mulling it over more and would like to add:

I'm basically reaching out for help to men who would like to actively contribute to improving the performance of gender dynamics and to provide space for healing and support in sudo room. Please consider contributing, no experts required, just an open mind.

Max,

I don't have any particular resources in mind at the moment, want to be a bit open-ended, see what makes sense, then do some research and document along the way.

I think its a great idea!

Would you mind linking to some resources that have explanations of what you're thinking about more specifically? I think people may have very different ideas of what a men's group might do. I can do some looking around later if need be.

Hey all,

I wanted to reach out for some feedback. Seeking folks who would want to facilitate or participate in a men's group.

I've previously participated in small groups like this and found them beneficial for various reasons. I would like to see if folks have had similar or different experiences.

The way I'm thinking about this would culminate in something like a regular meeting for men in the sudo room community to discuss relevant issues including those of identity, oppression, privilege, patriarchy, gender, sexuality, stereotypes, safe space, and mutual support.

This may not be the best or even a viable path to approach these topics, but I wanted to throw it out there to see if there is any interest.

Thanks,
Matt
