Agreed - start with the original hardware first.
Then figure out how to build a replacement cassette or cartridge that can download a story from an online server!
Lastly, develop a new robot that is backwards compatible with the original cassettes and/or cartridges, but less likely to break and/or offering novel capabilities. (Face tracking eyes, anyone?)
