I'm all for all due do-ocratic caution on this.

It reminded me vaguely of the Goiania incident, involving radioactive material salvaged from defunct medical equipment:

Not exactly the same set of concerns here, but instructive nonetheless.

Woah, ya'll need to relax.

First of all, the machine is inoperable at the moment.

Second, we're still trying to pick it up.

Third, it doesn't HAVE to be at sudo room at all, especially if it's not safe, etc.

Remember: value do-ocracy over bureaucracy.

Additionally, I believe that hazardous radiation may be in conflict with our safe space policies. Perhaps we can draft a radiation policy at the next meeting?

IMO its possibly better for us to do non radioactive art projects.

I'm all in favor of avoiding exposure to x-rays. I'd say this thing probably is never going to work, and might make an interesting art project or something.

If people are serious about attempting to make it work as an x-ray source, there would need to be a clear plan about how people would be protected from it. And I suspect that the time while the fix is being attempted, that is the most likely time to have accidental exposure to x-rays, so protection would need to come first.

Probably requires building some sort of lead lined enclosure around the thing with safety interlocks to make sure the door is closed before it can turn on, and that would probably be pretty expensive.

But if people are really into it, and can put up the money to make it happen...then the idea should be considered.

Thanks Steve, those lead shields are useful in minimizing radiation exposure in a clinical setting but unfortunately in a hacker space I would probably classify having an active X-ray source as a hazardous danger. I'm not against controlled risks but there is a very real risk of inadvertantly exposing other occupants to X-rays (even accidentally) and that could be a problem. Similar to some of the biowork that a few of us are hoping to do, we have to be really careful to ensure Sudo room is a physically safe enviroment (within reason) for all members, even if that means some things may not be possible in our shared space and I would feel a little uncomfortable with an active X-ray source being used (even if I'm in the other room).

Does anyone have any additional thoughts on this? I'm not an X-ray (or radiation) expert but I just wanted to chime in around the safety considerations that I thought might be important for us!

Hey Guys,

Just a word of caution from a Bio/Clinical guy (which I'm sure most of you are aware of but I just thought I'd bring it up).

We have to be really careful with X-ray's and if/when they're used in Sudo room as it can be carcinogenic (ionizing radiation causes DNA damage with potential to cause cancer). Radiation sources can also penetrate walls, so it could have potential outside of the confines of sudoroom.

If the machine is held in Sudo room we should also clearly mark it and let everyone know if/when it's activated!

All the best,
Ryan

What sort of an X-ray machine? I've always thought it would be handy to have one around to see what's inside various devices.
