Marina, thanks for that link. A technical question -- is there a significant difference in the purpose of the following pages?

https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Potential_spaces
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Sudo_room/open_a_space#Listings_Spreadsheet

If not -- any objections if I merge?

hi all,

as far as i can tell, the "state of gentrification of a neighborhood" (if it's even possible for that to mean anything) isn't currently one of our criteria when considering a new space: https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Sudo_room/open_a_space

gentrification is super important, but i'm not  sure why this discussion is relevant to the list. would folks who are interested in discussing this further please consider taking it off-list? if you are looking for a constructive way to improve the level of this kind of discussion, the "gentrification" & "what should we do about gentrification" entries on oakland wiki need lots of work.

Here's an amazing article with a ton of history:

I would highly recommend anyone who thinks they have useful things to
say on the mailing list to read ALL of it and reconsider their remarks......

I bit, but I didn't like the taste. It's a long article, so let me quote the concluding paragraph here:

"By discovering together a practice that seeks to 1) identify and attack development, 2) subvert and destroy the infrastructure of the city, and 3) destroy whiteness as an identity and a set of practices, we can forge a response to gentrification that hinges not on inactivity out of guilt, but instead from action motivated by our insurgent spirit."

The  anonymous author then goes on to enumerate an extensive list of "enemies," which are mainly business associations. In other words there's a pretty strong agenda driving this article, which might or might not align with various readers' visions of progress.

The article does offer some worthwhile historical nuggets, and in general I agree with the notion the author advances, that class or socioeconomic standing can be more useful anchoring concepts than race when considering the evolution of a city.

I am surprised that the Black Guerrilla Family doesn't get a mention among the radical groups with significant history here.

Max -- what do you see in this article that could inform the choice of a new location for Sudo Room?

Pete
