I guess it sums it up:

If OPD sees a black man sleeping in a car, they shoot him.

If you are white and ask them to protect the property you leave in your car, they might do it.
Because they've proved that they care more about your property than they do about a black life.

The question is, do you want to be complicit to that?

Is that issue something we could include in our safe space policy? Is there a need to carve it in stone somewhere in the building? I'll do whatever is needed to make it a thing: OPD friendly discourse is really, really NOT OK. It's offensive and threatening to the people who are from Oakland, to the people here who get harrassed on a daily basis, to the people here who dedicate, sometimes sacrifice their lives to the struggle for dignity and their basic human rights.

+1 to yar and daniel. I'm pretty upset right now.

So, let's be clear. If you come from far to be at the Omni, then be aware that you are arriving in a city where a lot of people suffer from poverty, racism and police brutality. Don't be a gentrifier. If you want your valuable belongings to be safe, then don't leave them in your car.
And don't ask the cops to protect your property.
They killed another black man, the father of a friend, a few days ago. He was sleeping in his car. OPD has invited 10 FBI agents to join their troop. The pigs are not our friends, and it's not funny. If you don't notice it, then I invite you to put yourself in the shoes of someone with less than you.

Joe: Please do not invite cops to the Omni area.

SERIOUSLY, this is not a joke.
Police do NOT care about Black and Brown people.
And IF there were good cops they will be arresting all those racist killer cops.

COPS are armed and HIGHLY DANGEROUS, specially toward people with out White Privilege.

And the more you talk, the more they learn about you and your friends.

Why not to talk to Police Officers:

Is the camera visible? If it is hidden it kind of defeats the purpose.

These are the kind of stickers I was thinking of (just a suggestion).

I think it would make more sense to put signs up saying "if you leave anything in your car, the windows will get broken and it will be stolen, even if it's covered up by an old shirt."

after all, there is a camera on the corner (pointed at omni) and it probably captures lots of car burglaries - i don't think anyone gets busted that way.

Alternative to cops would be to place a few stickers around Omni stating that the area has surveillance cams. Or even place a fake couple fake ones around.

there is the best alternative to inviting more police, same as the subject line.

additional info is not needed to substantiate that the omni as a collective is not in favor of an increased police presence.

Just for the record, I've lived in Oakland almost a decade, I've
driven to Omni 100+ times, and my car has NEVER been broken into. I'm
pretty sure that's because I just don't leave shit in it.
