Job Announcement: Legislative Advocate

 

The Consumer Federation of California is a progressive non-profit advocacy organization. We work to enact laws that protect consumers and we conduct consumer research and education projects. We work on a range of issues, with a current focus on consumer privacy, elder abuse, telecommunications, false advertising and fraud, and access to civil justice.  We are seeking an experienced Legislative Advocate to strengthen our team at the state capitol. The position will also include some supervision of the day to day operations at our Sacramento office. 

This is a full-time position in downtown Sacramento. At times long work hours are required, including
occasional weekends.  The Legislative Advocate reports to the Executive Director, and works under the guidance of the Legislative Director.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Monitoring legislation, keeping track of legislative calendars, and scanning relevant bills and amendments. Occasional work tracking regulatory proposals.  

 Meeting with lawmakers, legislative staff, regulators, allies and opponents to discuss legislation.

• Testifying before committees of the legislature and administrative agencies.

• Researching various consumer issues, federal and state laws, court rulings and litigation.

• Writing legislative alerts, letters, fact sheets, briefing memos, and background papers.

• Monitoring websites, news outlets and blogs, and drafting posts for blog sites.

• Assisting the Executive Director in supervising the day to day work of Sacramento staff.

 

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree is desirable.

• Minimum of three years lobbying experience and knowledge of California legislative process required.

• Strong writing skills, advanced research experience, and the ability to simplify complex policy issues into terms the general public can easily grasp.

• Strong verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, and a professional demeanor.

• Punctuality and willingness to work until tasks are completed. 
• Precise attention to detail and deadlines.

• Poise, mature judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential information. 
• Understanding of organizational protocol and roles.

• Knowledge of consumer issues and experience working for progressive social change preferred.

• Experience supervising staff desirable.

• Computer proficiency and knowledge of internet communications and social media. 
• Job requires valid driver’s license, and ability to work in stationary position for long periods, move back and forth to nearby office buildings, operate computer and office equipment, and lift light objects.
