BABEC Position Announcement: Part-time GeneConnection Program Manager

The Bay Area Biotechnology Education Consortium (BABEC) is seeking a GeneConnection (GC) Program Manager to implement the biotechnology education program in San Mateo County.  This individual will report to the Executive Director and work with GC Program Director to support STEM projects that benefit teachers and students in San Mateo County.

Position Overview
BABEC is accepting applications from well-qualified individuals.  The GeneConnection Program Manager is an energetic, results-orientated, collaborative professional, who excels while working on  multiple projects, can effectively manage critical timelines, and is passionate about science education.  We seek an effective communicator with an astute knowledge of how to work with a wide range of individuals in educational, academic and scientific fields.  The ideal candidate has experience in front of high school students and collaborating with high school teachers in either a public or private education setting.

Under the direction of the GeneConnection Program Director, the Program Manager will share responsibility for maintaining the program’s portable science laboratories.  This will include restocking, refurbishing, repairing and preparing laboratory equipment, reagents and supplies.  In addition, s/he will contribute to maintaining a comprehensive scheduling and inventory system, procure needed supplies, and manage the GeneConnection laboratory in an efficient and cost-effective manner.  S/he will be able to trouble-shoot unexpected lab results and equipment problems, when consulted.

The Program Manager will assist with coordinating the transfer of portable labs with the Lead Teachers and if needed, will be able to model/team-teach the curricula with new teachers.  Providing support and assistance with the equipment set-up and curricula implementation will be required.  In general, the Program Manager is expected to work with the GeneConnection Program Director but often will be expected to work relatively independently, applying the highest professional standards to her/his performance of all duties.  The Program Manager will share responsibility for mentoring student interns at the GeneConnection Lab facility.  S/he will be a compassionate, empathetic individual who understands the myriad challenges that classroom teachers encounter and the potential difficulties that may arise.

All BABEC Program Managers are cross-trained in BABEC’s operations to allow fluidity, as needed, within our organization.

Basic Qualifications

Required
-Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, or a related field
-At least 2 years of high school biology teaching experience
-Valid CA secondary teaching credential in life science or a related field AND/OR valid CA Career Technical Education credential with a focus on biotechology OR similar
-English language mastery
-Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Works and in accessing the Internet
-Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds, typically as boxes
-Access to a vehicle with a valid CA driver’s license and auto insurance policy
-Access to a computer and internet access
-Access to a personal cell phone

Preferred
-Expertise in assisting/mentoring teachers, especially those new to biotechnology
-Experience in teaching a high school biotechnology curriculum
-Understanding of, and fluency with, NGSS
-Experience in working in an academic or industrial laboratory setting
-Experience in performing laboratory procedures and preparations
-Experience in maintaining scientific equipment and inventories
