Questions that still need answering:
#What responsibilities does the board have? Ensuring that a minimum amount of paperwork is filed per required timelines.
#What are official positions within the board? The only official position is the treasurer. Other unofficial positions may exist and should rotate; e.g. scribe, facilitator, etc
#Does the board have a chairman? No chairman is required. Therefore, we don't have one.
#Does sudoroom have a CEO? No CEO is required to be incorporated. Therefore, we don't have one. If we had one, the board would have the responsibility to hire or fire the CEO.
#Does a board member have a legal duty to fund raise? Not unless it's written in the articles of incorporation.
#What legal and/or financial liabilities does a board member have compared to a member of sudoroom who is not on the board?
#What type of legal classification do we have? California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation
#What type of legal classification do we NOT have? Benefit Corporation (B Corp)
#What type of legal classification do we want to have in the future? 501c.3
#Are we a business? No

Sudo Room
Update 02/28/2014
Subject: Re: [sudo-discuss] STATE FARM: GENERAL LIABILITY QUOTE AND
RENTERS INSURANCE BROCHURE
Hey all,

I paid $149.32 for two months of installments and a $2 filing fee from the
sudo room account and passed the certificate of insurance on to the
landlords.

// Matt
2141 Broadway
Requests from the landlords:
:"Liability insurance with George and I as named insureds for $1M that covers the usual (injury, damages, fire, theft, etc.) for officers and members of the Sudo room re. the building. When you have the policy they will give us a certificate of insurance."

So this seems to imply we need the typical General Liability insurance to cover $1M with the landlords as named insureds.

Research
General Liability Insurance
via InsuranceForNonProfits.org:
"This is typically the "core" coverage for a nonprofit. Most commercial general liability insurance provides coverage for a wide range of acts or offenses which result in bodily injury, personal injury, advertising injury or property damage to a third party. The most common type of incident covered by this policy is a "slip and fall". Commercial general liability (often referred to as CGL or GL) insurance is generally available as an "occurrence" policy, which provides significant advantages over a "claims-made" policy.

A general liability policy may also extend to special events. If your organization conducts any type of special events, you should make sure that your general liability policy includes special events and that you follow any requirements about providing notice of special events."

Talking Points
*All-ages meeting area separate from workshop area.
*Anyone under 18 accompanied by an adult guardian.
*No seriously dangerous tools in the space.

Underwriter Paragraph
Just a draft of key points to make, please prettify the language:

This appropriate-technology rocket stove is a replicable, open source wood grill which can be made using found material and minimal tools access. Design and instructions on how to build can be found at Art and Revolution: https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Art_and_Revolution

A Rocket Stove is appropriate technology. One of the most efficient and minimalistic converters of wood into heat, the stove can be used to boil water quickly and saves the camper having to carry and buy replacement fuels. The first version burned successfully and proved lasting, even with being used every day in a farm situation. After losing the first version, the second version was built with found materials in the street. Finally, a third version was made, pictured, with found materials as well. This one has near perfect air-flow, for a long contracted burn. We are looking at building miniature versions, once we eat more canned food! I will upload the drawn schematics with the how-to.
We are a group of volunteers building a community mesh network in Oakland, California.

A mesh network is, in essence, free as in freedom alternative internet. Using low-cost routers (often donated or recycled) mounted on rooftops, we're currently building the backbone of the mesh throughout downtown Oakland, from West Oakland to the Fruitvale BART and beyond!

Mesh networks are awesome because they don't depend on the existing centralized Internet Service Providers to function. Though they can be connected to the Internet as we know it now, a mesh network provides a decentralized mode of communication with our local community. We view mesh networks as a means of connecting to our neighbors, supporting local businesses, and enabling grassroots community collaboration. In the event of disaster or government censorship, an active mesh network is a resilient means of communication and sharing of information.
Building a backbone of point-to-point line of sight rooftop wifi mesh nodes to bootstrap the reach of the network
*The mesh right now has very few nodes that are directly connected (as opposed to connected over the Internet), which makes the usefulness of the mesh questionable in disaster and extreme censorship scenarios.
*We've been focusing on finding a simple and inexpensive solution for point to point rooftop nodes in order to create a far reaching backbone of high-bandwidth interconnected nodes. Currently we're testing a solution using recycled small satellite dishes with cheap usb wifi adapters mounted and weatherproofed at the dish's point of focus. Inexpensive computers such as a raspberry pi can then, when hooked up to one or more of these nodes, connect rooftops more than a mile apart. Finding people willing to host rooftop equipment and others willing to donate unused satellite dishes has become another way we engage with the local community.

Mesh coverage of local areas from connected nodes using powerful omnidirectional wifi equipment
*510pen currently uses a variety of mesh routers from open-mesh.com. Some of them have good coverage, but they are all currently mounted indoors, which inhibits street coverage and mesh links between blocks.
*Better outdoor omnidirectional routers need to be purchased, tested and installed.

Low bandwidth disaster recovery mesh
*The likeliest disaster scenario in the bay area is a major earthquake. Such an event is likely to disrupt many wifi nodes, and especially finely tuned point to point links.
*We're building a separate mesh using low-bandwidth, long range radio communication that will run something like a decentralized twitter, where short text messages can be shared and synchronized as radio links are available.
*To implement this, we're using $12 off the shelf tv tuners that can be used as receive-only general-purpose digital radios. Transmission is stil being worked out, but the current idea is that receive-hardware is cheap enough that 2 gig bootable usb sticks, tv tuners and very simple home-made antennas can be distributed both before and after a disaster, and that these will allow people to set up local stations where updates about local resources such as shelters, food and power can be accessed, while stations capable of transmitting new messages will be fewer (possibly requiring more expensive hardware) but will announce their locations such that anyone can walk to a local transmit station if they want to send a message out on the mesh.

Social
Community-Based Participatory Action Research in the San Antonio district of Oakland
*We are currently researching existing community organizations in the San Antonio neighborhood for potential collaboration, and have established relationships with (and set up mesh nodes for) three grassroots organizations in the San Antonio neighborhood: Liberating Ourselves Locally (LOL), a makerspace run by and for people of color; Sustaining Ourselves Locally (SOL), a community garden and food justice advocacy and education space; and Cycles of Change, a community bike repair, advocacy and education space. Moving forward, we intend to expand the mesh through reaching out to grassroots organizations and local businesses, our process of designing and deploying mesh services guided by the needs and desires of existing community actors.

*The ethnographic research component of the project also involves interviewing local residents, designing and distributing community surveys, historical and political analysis, and asset mapping of existing and potential community resources.

Documentation of use cases and user stories
*Articulating use cases for mesh networks involves the creation of user stories based on interviews with local residents and participatory engagement with existing community organizations and groups. The research process will be transparently documented on a research wiki, incorporating interview notes, meeting minutes, an annotated bibliography, written analysis and visual infographics (for an example, see Jenny's current research wiki here: http://wiki.tidepools.co).

*This documentation is intended to support a model of open source technology design that is bottom-up in nature, rooted in the interests of those who would receive the greatest humanitarian benefit from the technology and participate intimately with the development process.

Illustrated instructables for adapting recycled/reused items for DIY hardware
*A major focus of the project is to experiment with recycled and donated hardware for the purposes of designing mesh solutions at minimal cost. Experimentation with various firmwares (eg; Commotion, Freifunk, Byzantium) and protocols (eg; OLSRd, batman-adv, Babel) using off-the-shelf and upcycled hardware (eg; donated routers and satellite dishes) will be extensively documented. Well-designed instructables/comics will incorporate use cases, user stories, and DIY building processes in an effort to engage everyday folks to experiment with mesh technology in their local neighborhoods.
* There is a yellow wire going to a screw terminal on the Arduino which controls power to the computer. This is a safety mechanism and will force a hard reboot when terminal connection is lost by the Arduino (including during normal software exit). Unscrew this cable when uploading new firmware to the Arduino.
DIY Cloth Menstrual Pads Workshop
Saturday, May 4th, 2013: 2p-??
NO EXPERIENCE OR ABILITY TO MENSTRUATE NECESSARY! Come learn how to make beautiful and practical cloth pads out of old clothing! Materials will be provided, but if you want, you can bring old ripped-up clothing (preferrably soft, natural fibers), needles, thread, snaps or buttons. This workshop is intended for people who menstruate and for people who have friends who menstruate (and want to make them lovely presents).
We will also go over a dizzying array of cool lady products beyond the cloth pad, and have fun cost-comparisons of different options.
*List of awesome GNU Radio projects

UHD gain selection
The command:

sudo uhd_find_devices

Should list the gain range for the TX or RX frontend of choice.

E.g. for the WBX TX frontend you get:

Gain range PGA0: 0.0 to 25.0 step 0.1 dB

Make sure you're not looking at the gain range for TX when you're looking to receive or vice-versa, as the won't necessarily be the same!

GNU Radio UHD device selection
For a USRP 1 this should be in the form: serial=<hex_serial>. E.g:

serial=24e6b31a

To find device serial run:

sudo uhd_find_devices

You're looking for output that looks like:

| _____________________________________________________
| /
| | Mboard: USRP1
| | serial: 24e6b31a

To set the sub-device (the daughterboard and channel) use the format:

<slot_name>:<daughterboard_frontend_id>

E.g:

B:0

This slot_name and daughterboard_frontend_id are also findable with the command:

sudo uhd_find_devices

The output you're looking for looks like:

| | _____________________________________________________
| | /
| | | RX Dboard: B
| | | ID: WBX, WBX + Simple GDB (0x0053)
| | | _____________________________________________________
| | | /
| | | | RX Frontend: 0
| | | | Name: WBXv2 RX+GDB
| | | | Antennas: TX/RX, RX2, CAL
| | | | Sensors: lo_locked
| | | | Freq range: 68.750 to 2200.000 Mhz
| | | | Gain range PGA0: 0.0 to 31.5 step 0.5 dB
| | | | Connection Type: IQ
| | | | Uses LO offset: No

Specifically the lines:

| | | RX Dboard: B

and:

| | | | RX Frontend: 0

Together making up the B:0.

For command-line python scripts
For command line scripts, device and sub-device is often specified with the --args and --spec arguments. E.g:

my_script.py --args serial=24e6b31a --spec B:0

This syntax may vary from script to script, but this is the most common syntax.

For GNU Radio Companion
For the "UHD: USRP Sink" in the latest version of grc (as of this writing) the field "Device Addr" would be set to e.g. serial=24e6b31a and the field "Mb0: Subdev Spec" would be set to e.g. "B:0".
Food hacking at Sudo Room

Carbonated Mate Drinks

We are on the way to making more ecological, less wasteful, less sugary, and overall healthier versions of soda and "energy drinks" at SudoRoom.

* Max has this incredible idea... I'm letting him run with it!
* Romy can bring her own SodaStream from home to make carbonated water. Later we can find ways to buy cheap co2 cannisters and make soda without using proprietary products.

Sudomate
We don't need no proprietary carbonation
we don't need no energy drink monopolization
we don't need no high fructose corn syrup
we just need some sudomate to rip rip rip

Recipe for Sudo Mate Mach 5<br>
280 g sugar liquid & lightly caramelized<br>
80g of Mate thrown into the hot sugar. Stir to mix all mate into liquid sugar<br>
4 Liters of hot water to disolve the sugar and steep the mate. Steep 5 minutes.<br>
Add<br>
4 pinches of salt<br>
25g vanilla xtract<br>
30g ginger sliced fine<br>
50g honey<br>
40g lemon juice (bout a lemons worth)<br>
40g lime juice (bout 2 limes)<br>
and 2 pinches of guar gum<br>
mixxx<br>
yield is apprx 4 Liters
* |RomyIlano I am the lone wolf iphone developer at SudoRoom. I previously suggested Cocos2D but the WWDC 2013 announcements changed everything! Since this stuff is NDA, please contact me. we are the lone wolves and outcasts of the open source community. If we do not band together the angry mob will take us and burn us at the stake. Be aware that there are lot of people being paid off by varoius business interests to promote Android at SudoRoom so keep your iOS development a secret or they will gang up on you. == HOW DO WE CREATE.... ==

...social life beyond the rat-race competition for scarce resources?

...a broadly shared sense of our interdependence, based on concrete experience and not just good intentions?

...public decision making that reflects the diverse insights and experiences of all?

...a working model of collective power emphasizing the regular actions of many over the extraordinary actions of a few?

IMAGINE
that in Oakland, community forums are regularly held in every neighborhood -
in libraries, churches, schools, and other community spaces.

People come together to discuss the important issues of their neighborhoods and of the city.

Unlike the usual sorts of public forums where officials where officials deliberate with token input from ordinary folks, these gatherings are run by people in the community.

At these empowered Neighborhood Assemblies people do not merely make reccomendations or share their opinions.

They make fundamental decisions.

They decide how the city is run.

They decide the city budget.

What percentage should go to police, to youth programs, parks, transits, etc.?

What new programs do we need?

Which programs do we phase out? Etc.

Although city staff provide necessary technical expertise, reports, etc., and city officials continue to do the detailed day - to - day work of managing city business,

the fundamentals of how our city works - as reflected in our budget - is decided directly by we the people.

We will have strong participatory democracy at the local level.

This bottom up "people's budgeting" program could be a template for other cities to follow,
and could scale up to inspire the deepening democracy at the county, state, and even national level.

By bringing people together to discuss, debate, and decide on concrete issues that affect their lives,
the Neighborhood Assemblies would help thousands of people in Oakland - from all walks of life - improve their communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills by building collective understanding and colective power.

This is exactly the kind of culture shift our society needs.

* Funnel
* Blender (optional)
* Fine Mesh Metal Strainer (optional)
* Knife/Cutting board etc (optional)
Wish List
* Apple grinder/crusher (ok maybe we should just make one)
<br>

Learnings
What we are learning from time to time

From of Batch #1, #2 and #3
RECIPES ETC
*Vanilla extract makes for a really nice aroma. REALLY AWESOME TO HAVE! GETZ IT!
* Salt-lite, mix of potasium and sodium 50/50, is even better than salt. More electrolytes.

PROCESS, GEAR
* Bigger pot for main-batch - our keg is 5 gallons. Morten can bring the Subiir turkeyfrier for brewing for next time.
* More containers and things to pour from, into and through in general.
** Getting a big and fine strainer along with a corresponding funnel would be very awesome.
* It was a bit confusing that there were a lot of opinions on each batch. Making batches with separate master chefs worked really well to counter this.
** However, it was a bit messy with a lot of batches going on at once. Better space preparing and workflow would improve this greatly.
* A designated documenter made sure documentation was happening; it worked well that said documenter said ready by the keyboard, doing Just In Time documentation (ie. chefs would simply say numbers as they added, as it was all very experimental).

Bottling from Keg, links
* some thoughts
* a thorough account and walkthru
**Carbonate it
***Bobby, David Wild's roommate does this
****Ask him nicely
****Pay him
***Buy a soda-stream
****(Morten: "I think this would be very expensive. Might be possible to use a real "carbonater" thing, I know Tom's dad has one.")
*****Eric the metal Worker has one I just found out Maximilianklein (talk) 22:02, 7 April 2013 (PDT)
*****Patrick has a sudostream, and suggests these tutorials [5]
**Transport it too bottler
*Bottle It. (Morten can totally be responsible for this)
**Use as many recycled bottles as possible
***Put call out for more bottles
****Pay a homeless person worst comes to worse
***Does it require refrigerated storage?
***Do we have a refrigerator

Core equipment
Open PCR - with a low target price

Gel Box - 120 Volts with amps upto 400 milliamps, imaging possible using a webcam or cell phone

Incubator - Foam box with plexiglass hood and incubator (airflow is important possibly just a little hole, possibly Kombucha style with paper towel top)

Centrifuge - centrifuge (based on the dremelfuge idea of utilizing commercially available equipment)

Our current idea is to us a modular design which would allow the use of one standardized power unit and possibly CPU

Additional Hardware Project Wish list
Sterlization Hood

Mini Fridge

Wetware
*
*
Software
*
*
Currently discussing a possible open source automation OS for all the modules but still at a very early stage, Marc is has an open source LIMBS system he's developing which may be adoptable.

General
sudoroom has an active beer-brewing group. The mash is made off-site (due to a lack of out-door facilities at sudo room) and fermentation and bottling happens at sudoroom.

Have a look at the individual brews for more info.
*subiir 2
*Subiir 6 - fermentation started june 19th
*Subiir 7 - brewed july 10th

Projects
For anyone who wants to brew home brew beer, the materials and basic process are as follows. There is actually a large home-brew community and recipes so, anyone should check in with a basic google search to start: .

The rest is hardware and, there's some that is required for it. The main things are a vat which you can bring to a boil when you're stirring the ingredients, a syphon hose rubber tube, and a large tub with an air vent, that lets out the vent air as the sugar is transformed by yeast to alcohol. :) Finally, you will need a way to bottle the beer.

Automated brew system
Project to create an automated system to preheat mash and sparge water, carry out step mashing program, and alert operator of different manual steps such as adding hops.

System Components:

-ATMega 328p based controller

-DS1307 Real Time Clock

-DS18B20 Digital Temperature Sensors

-16x4 character LCD Screen

-4x Relay board for pumps and heating elements

-Serial connection for reprogramming

Possible add-ons:

-continuous hopping auger

-servo-controlled gas valve for boil stage

-buzzers and UI improvements

Where there is little access to precipitation, surface water, or groundwater, we must rip water directly from the air. Driven by the need for water at a remote facility, where construction activities have been ongoing through a years-long drought in central Texas, the development of alternative water supply technologies is underway. Under consideration are passive radiative systems and active thermoelectric systems.

The test rig shown below only produced a few mL of water due to failure on the first evening of the commercially manufactured dehumidifier EVA-2200. It is assumed that the fan shut off before the thermoelectric element, leading to overheating and failure. Future systems will have to be designed with scalable power consumption and additional thermal shutdown triggers.
