PatrikD: Added info on Rust-O-Leum EpoxyShield, and vinyl tiles

It is almost summer 2019, which means we are going to redo our floor!

How? We don't know yet!

Options
Sudoroom is ~1500sqft. The entire bocce ball court is ~2800sqft.

* epoxy
* tile
* laminate
* linoleum

Epoxy
things to buy
* more nail shoes
* really nice squeegees

prep
* clear area
* vacuum
* scrape gum & shit off
* pressure wash or mop?
** probably not needed if you're going to grind down to bare concrete anyway!
* let it dry
* grind/mill concrete down to the clean stuff
** rent professional concrete grinder with dust capture (or wet grinder). Grinding is a TON of work and can get very messy, so invest in good tools.
** acid etching w/ clean-n-etch stuff?
** rinsing?
* fill deep gashes w/cement or plaster or epoxy
* box in area with wood
** only needed for the $$$ self-leveling stuff
* primer - soaks down, bonds with concrete (usually water based)
** do we need the oil-stop kind? is there oil in our concrete?
* sand broadcast to prep for self-levelling stuff?

final
Types:
* solvent-based: doesn't like humidity, high VOC, unsafe indoors
* water-based: much lower VOC
* solids-based: no VOC, best but more expensive
* are they all 2-part? A+B (resin + hardener)?

Brands:
* Rust-O-Leum EpoxyShield (cheap at home depot, only 2 colors)
** $137 for a kit covering 500sqft. $411 for all of Sudo?
** Patrik used this for the small back lab in CCL, and was very satisfied with it. No noticeable odor whatsoever. Goes on like a thick paint, so easy to apply over uneven surfaces using a paint roller (no nail shoes or squeegee needed). Formulated for garage floors, so designed to be able to handle cars driven over it, or solvents spilled.
* Muscle Gloss (very expensive, and more finicky to apply)

Methods:
* 1 base coat w/black paint, 1 top coat w/glitter? I love this video - they are using one of these products but method is probably similar for other brands
** "normally 4.5 gallons would cover 700sqft of concrete, but sand absorbs it, you'll need 2-3x as much" (so ~9 gallons for sudo)
** 1lb glitter per gallon of epoxy

Tile
BioCurious covered their old lab space with simple peel&stick vinyl tiles that they managed to get a deal on, at $0.25 per sqft - normally more like $0.40 per sqft. Cheapest at Home Depot is $0.63 per sqft. Adds up to $350-560 to cover all of Sudo.

Pro: doesn't require grinding down to bare concrete, which saves an enormous amount of work. Pressure wash should be plenty.

Con: Some of the tiles at BioCurious got damaged after only 1yr, especially over bumps and dents in the concrete which resulted in local wear on the tiles. Might be because of the dirt cheap tiles they used though. Also, repair is easy: just peel up damaged tile, and stick down another.

* 1 tbsp mate (~6 gram) per cup -> 288 gram Mate for 48 cups
* We used Guayaki San Mateo Air Dried Mate - "Bright, Lively and Herbal"
* 35 g ginger
* Zest and juice from 2 lemons (medium size)
* 173g of Xylitol (less actually - forgot to subtract weight of the container!)
* 139g of invert sugar

Process:
# Boil ginger and lemon for 30 minutes
# Bring mash from boil to 185 fahrenheit by adding room temp water
# Add mate and stir in
# Steep for 10 minutes at 175 fahrenheit (we were aiming for 185F/85C, but we took too long to weigh out the mate, and then the temp dropped some more during steeping)
# Strain through tea strainer (takes way too long - need to get big kitchen strainer and/or cheese cloth instead!)
# Add lemon juice.
# Added and stirred in Xylitol
# Add and stir in invert sugar to taste

We used up all the ginger, lemon and Xylitol we had left; could definitely use more of all of those next time. Invert sugar was added in a couple batches (dissolving the sticky stuff in 1/2 liter of warm mate each time), until we reached consensus that the mix was sweet enough. Definitely far less sweet than the commercial stuff, but that's the way we like it. We'll see how that holds up once we add carbonation...

Income-bringing Options
Thought from 5/16 meeting: There seem to be three categories to bring in income (below). The discussion group thought that membership fees and services/goods offered would be the main sources of income, with the quality of the goods/services offered greatly affecting the energy and support of membership.

1. Membership Fees (perhaps $50-$100/mo, with sliding scale available for starving students / unemployed)
From 5/16 meeting:
* Should a driving principle be to separate membership fee-paying from perception of having influence in SudoRoom? Or, to what extent should financial contribution be separate from 1) governance privileges 2) access to the space?

* Should "member" be the term used? What about participant/ supporter/ Sudo-Agent? (Patrik: we can call them whatever we want internally, but for the elevator pitch we should refer to them as "members", because that is what people understand.)

* Accept in-kind donations if cash not available? What would the list of acceptable trades be?

1.1 Possible membership benefits - what reason do we give people to donate on a regular basis?
* Governance privileges
* Access to the space
* Access to shared tools
* Maybe a substantive membership benefit would be that members get to invite speakers & have classes at the space without having to get larger group approval
** would anyone pay for that privilege?
* Discount for classes or other goods/services

2. Services/ Goods Offered to Community (Classes/ SkillShares; Events: Speakers, Conferences, Movie Nights; Goods: DIYbio kits, repair workshops, etc)
* From 5/16 meeting: Selling goods/services can fuel and support membership (ie, members can provide goods/host events/teach classes/act as speakers + these activities can bring new members); but does charging for these opportunities run counter to the sudo open + accessible principle?
** Not being able to pay the rent also runs counter to the open + accessible principle

3. Fundraising (Grants: city/state/federal/private; Straight Donations, ex Donate button on website; Parties; Crowdfunding)
* From 5/16 meeting: fundraising is time-consuming and difficult and will be more likely if membership is solid (also, goods/services provided by the community can inform the viability of grants/crowdfunding)

* Also: crowdfunding vs funding portal (eg; Sudo Room as Kickstarter Project vs. Sudo Room as Kickstarter :)
*

*Can also crowd-source it. Matt will be disappointed if we have to do this ;)
** BioCurious used crowdSPRING for their new logo. For $250 they received 75 design concepts from 20 designers - check out some of the other entries: http://www.crowdspring.com/project/2291219_biocurious-biotechnology-hackerspace-logo/

Plan
The plan is separated into the goals (sort of early mission for now), the constraints (more like things to keep in mind), and current approaches.
Goals
* To create a creative community hacker space in the East Bay Area near San Francisco, CA, specifically in Oakland, CA.
* Provide public interfacing and opportunities.
Constraints
* BART train access is a crucial location constraint.
* Areas of preferred location are: Temescal, Downtown, and Lake Merritt areas of Oakland, CA.
* There are some hackerspaces in the East Bay that focus a bit more on Maker Culture. The constraint here may be to open up to other creative areas besides robotics, fabrication, and hardware. At the very least, focus on virtual and software creativity could be useful! Existent spaces:
** Ace Monster Toys
** The Crucible
** Ponoko
** Techliminal (co-working space; hosts Make:SF meetups)

Approaches
* Build a community and group of members, grow our ideas together, and open a space over the next 1-2 years.
* Create online presence and communications infrastructure
* Hold weekly or bi-weekly meeting, salon, or meetup.
* Collect membership dues to start building a budget.
* Apply to relevant grants, fellowships, and various funding opportunities.
