- Dante read the eviction-related proposal from the mailing list.

- at least six people clearly indicated a yes vote, and no one objected. proposal is adopted.

- Omni Cafe Sin Fronteras Proposal: The lease agreement for the cafe proposal was discussed. Some of the terms seemed confusing, and possibly irrelevant. No one stated any objection to the idea of a cafe, but Kyle thought there might be some snag for the omni if the cafe is allowed to proceed. Specificlly, preserving omni's nonprofit status seems like a concern. For-profit member collectives were discussed. Apparently we've had them before. Laura says that their other coffee shop (Akat Cafe) has been around since ~2013. The sense of the meeting seems to be that we're generally in favor of having a coffee shop, but there are some concerns about some details. Hours of operation, exact description/sketch/drawing of space to be leased. Amount of rent ($800/month for the space + $250/month for utilities + unclear amount for property tax)
Areas of concern:
- term of lease (4+4 seems long, 2+2 seems more reasonable)
- cost of signage, and whether omni should pay for it, and the intent of the requirement to provide signage (whether something specific was needed, or if it could be removed from the lease entirely and dealt with later)
- Exact floorplan and square footage was unclear
- multiple people wanted more clarity about the intention to become a member collective or not, with strong preference that they do
Also, not an area of concern, but a friendly message: stop by and visit us sometime so we can get to know you, and you can get to know us.

But, here is what I have experienced."During the last two weeks I had two inteactions with Ryan. He has been easy going, friendly, and sharing knowledge in humble manners. He has also expressed to me that he is available to help us with battery-solar related issues/projects. By learning that, I even invited him to attend the Sudomesh/PON meetings on Tuesday. He also had volunteered to go to Tiburon to pick up some UPSs units that are available for donation, but because of the ban situation this has been put on hold."

PROPOSAL: the sudoroom community stands by our existing safe space ban of ryan martin for reasons of prolonged intimidation and harassment. we will seek more information, but prioritize supporting our long-time community members. the ban will continue unless it's overturned by a member vote at a future sudoroom meeting.

Sudoroom's official meetings are every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7pm, or sometimes as late as 7:30. They are bureaucratic, sometimes fun, and usually more functional than rumored. We try to handle conflicts respectfully.

== Etherpad ==

We keep our agenda on an etherpad. The etherpad is projected on a big screen for everyone to see. Anyone who knows the URL can collaboratively edit it on their laptop. After the meeting, its contents are copied to our wiki - that's how we keep record. Then we clear it for the next meeting and people can add items throughout the week. Ideally someone posts a summary to the mailing list, but that doesn't always happen.

Unfortunately, in the past our etherpad has caught the attention of online troll dens who like to overwhelm it and make it unusable. For this reason, we don't post the address online. Sorry! '''These addresses''' had been used in the past, and '''are obsolete''':

Sudoroom's official meetings are every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7pm, or sometimes as late as 7:30. They are bureaucratic, sometimes fun, and usually more functional than rumored. We try to handle conflicts respectfully.

== Etherpad ==

We keep our agenda on an etherpad. The etherpad is projected on a big screen for everyone to see. Anyone who knows the URL can collaboratively edit it on their laptop. After the meeting, its contents are copied to our wiki - that's how we keep record. Then we clear it for the next meeting and people can add items throughout the week. Ideally someone posts a summary to the mailing list, but that doesn't always happen.

Unfortunately, in the past our etherpad has caught the attention of online troll dens who like to overwhelm it and make it unusable. For this reason, we don't post the address online. Sorry! '''These addresses''' had been used in the past, and '''are obsolete''':

** i don't care if you're joking, we should really unpack everything that is problematic with this kind of attitude. you're treating Omni as a site of competition rather than cooperation. start from the premise that we're all building a commons, and the commons should include both a space for hacking technology and a space for housing activism. the same people can participate in either of these things, and people in either group with the privilege of having enough money, should give what they can to support the ENTIRE community. it's also a lot more likely that a hackerspace will have members able to pay, since new members show up all the time who basically got a tech job, moved here, googled "hackerspace", showed up and became sudoroom members. meanwhile people who already live here and don't have tech jobs are struggling because newcomers are driving up their rents, and have to resort to things like squatting. then they come and ask for some space, and people with nice tech jobs reply with "what if i don't want to pay either?" seriously?
* yar thinks this is a lot of bullshit when all that should really be asked is "what are you able to pay" and when the answer is "nothing" then the conversation should be about how their work fits with omni's mission. period. These conversations about money have been so distressing and disappointing that I'm considering proposing that Omni have totally "need-blind admission", that new member collective proposals don't even consider money, and that happen in private conversation with the finance working group. Because the way we're doing things is just poisonous.

The quick and easy way to return the system to a working state is to reboot everything (assuming nothing is broken). Find the doorjam computer. It is a laptop hidden under the tiny shelf under the larger shelf on the east wall up agains the big white La Commune counter. On the side of this laptop is the power button. Press it for about a second, then wait for the computer to shut down on its own. If it doesn't shut down after e.g. 20 seconds then press and hold it until it shuts down. After it shuts down, find the big black power brick connected the the door. It's lying on the floor up against the east wall closer to the door. It's a black power brick with one wire going to the arduino mounted on the door and one wire going an extension cord. Unplug where the power brick is plugged into the extension cord, wait a couple of seconds, then plug it back in. Now go to the laptop and press the power button to power it back on. The laptop will take a while to boot. At some point during boot it will speak its IP addresses. A minute or two after it has spoken its IP it should be ready. If it still doesn't work then something more profound is wrong.

A Hash is created from the already present magnetization pattern on the the stripe. It is hashed using salted SHA1. This means that the information on the cards is not stored anywhere, so if someone steals the computer they will not have access to any private information.

Works with most standard magnetic cards without effecting there normal use. Does not work with 100% of the tested local transit tickets (MTA and BART). However, it is not advised to use Cards which could be harmful to you if the information on the stripes gets in wrong hands (like Government issued IDs or Credit cards). We can not exclude the possibility that Hackers could excess the System storing the Data.<ref>As a matter of fact we can guarantee that. </ref>

Let's look for creative solutions to this problem. We could hang large diffusers and light them from behind at night. We could build tall structures of organic art that hang down from the ceiling rafters and light up the room. Think of large (but deceptively light-weight) giga-flowers and cocoons growing down from the rafters and providing both real lighting and various mood lighting.

Let's say proper lighting will cost $1k until someone actually calculates stuff.

sudo room would look less like and be treated less like a warehouse if the floor was hardwood. It would also be much less dusty since we could actually clean the floor properly.

sudo room is just under 2000 sqft (about 44 by 45, see [https://omnicommons.org/mediawiki/images/7/74/4799Shattuck-Detail_Drawings_pg2.png this image] or [https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Floorplan the omni floor plan]).

Solid bamboo flooring is about $2 per foot. We might be able to get it cheaper but since we probably don't want to attempt to do all of sudo room's floor in one go we might want to choose a brand/model of flooring where there's a high chance we'll be able to get more of the same later.

So, let's say it will cost $5000 to re-floor sudo room. $4k for the flooring and $1k for the underlayment, tools and food for volunteer workers :)

We could do one quarter of the floor in one go or half, depending on how big we want the crowdfunding campaign target to be.

Cost: $1300 or $2500 or $5000 depending on how big a chunk we do at a time.

The acoustics don't seem to be terrible actually but it'd be nice to think about how we can limit noise flowing between sudo and CCL.

We could also mount speakers all around sudo so we can have music or background sounds in different areas to alter the mode. E.g. the default could be Star Trek TNG Enterprise engine hum on all speakers :)

It would be pretty great to have a partial second floor, e.g. as a tall mezzanine all the way around sudo room, or even just as a half floor covering exactly half of sudo.

This could be a bunch of pallet shelves from craigslist or it could be a permitted permanent addition which could evolve into a full second floor across both CCL and sudo room with transparent glass (matte or distorting) in parts of the floor to let the natural light all the way down.

If we do just pallet shelves then they definitely won't be wheelchair accessible so we'd have to think about what types of stuff we put on them (ideally a duplicate meeting area or storage area). I believe pallet shelves have to be spaced some distance from the walls to be legal and have some sort of earthquake rating.

It'd be interesting to get an idea what it would cost to get professional contractors to put in a partial second floor (that could be expanded to a full second floor later) and then work towards raising that money with grants etc.

You can put a useful tool or some hacker ore neatly at sudoroom. Once you put something out at sudo and unless it says "do not hack on it" (and even then) there is no guarantee as to what will happen. You can however also rent a locker at sudo if you need private space, it is $25 per month.

Sudo room doesn't have official hours. If you are a member you can get 24-hour access to let yourself in. If you are not a member, you will have to depend on at least one other member being there to let you in, and you would be their guest.

Typically there people at sudo room from 11am to 2am (or later 4am) most days of the week - but no guarantees.

Complicated. Sudo room does not offer fix-it services. You can come to sudo room, use all our tools, and ask for help in fixing it yourself. == Terms ==
A program document specifies the requirements of a space without concern for how these requirements will be met. By coming up with a program before planning the specific layout, we separate the concerns of specifying requirements and implementing those specifications.

== History of the space ==
When we got the space, the shelves started out on the floor, so we put up the shelves.

The shelves were mostly cut by Jordan from huge doors.

The workbench counters were cut out of the same doors. We put them where they are because they fit right under the drywall.

People wanted workbenches under the windowsill, but it never really got used as that because junk goes there.

Matt found all of the cubbies on the street one day, so he brought them to sudo.

The rack on wheels has floated around a bit.

There was a big clusterfuck where the 3D printer is now, and it eventually became just the 3D printer. The computer gets used for email and whatnot a lot.

The big table was here first. We borrowed it from George, originally for a workshop.

There was another electronics station that was great but not for meetings, and that got taken apart.

Jordan made the desk in the back.

There were once full computer workstation desks.

I recorded these observations on August 3, 2013, during the reorganization weekend. They should represent how the room was normally arranged before that.

I should add some pictures so that everything below makes sense.

These observations focus more on objects rather than how people interact with them. You might call these "traces" or "leftovers" or other things depending on the exact observation.

* Junk often accumulates in on the main table.
* There are plants all over the place, but there's no special place for them.
* Each table has access to power plugs.
* Those big yellow papers are all over the place. (Does anyone read them?)
* High shelves aren't used very much. (Maybe they're hard to reach.)
* There's a plastic tarp between the shelf with the bio-hacking and the power tools.
* Do the things on the bulletin board ever change?

* The stuff on the windowsill is rarely used.
* DoraBot and empty arcades are rarely used but not stored in the closet. (These are big; maybe we should come up with a better way of storing big things.)
* People plug into the speakers quite a bit.
* Do people ever access things from the cubbies?
* Maybe like 15 people are in the Sudoroom proper at peak times. Other people might be in the common space.
* People use the refrigerator a lot

The Sudoroom sink is for science, and the common sink is for food.

There should be a table that you can see across so we can hold meetings.

* There should be lots of easily-accessible big shelves where can dump their junk so they don't leave it in the middle of the room.

* Storage space should be near the work areas.
* The woodworking tools should be away from the computer work table.

* It would be cool if two meetings could happen at once without distracting each other.

== Brainstorm ==

* Stuff dumping, backpacks and such end up wherever, boxes, etc. There should be big shelves next to the work areas, both for your projects as well as for your belongings as you work.
* Shelves everywhere, really deep shelves, 2', like the book shelves but without any books.
* Why does stuff keep accumulating by the window? Lots of reasons, but should we remove it?
* We have no space to store big things.
* Plan for a new space, rather than focusing on just this space?
* Use vertical space, maybe use a ladder.
* Books take up a lot of space.
* Deep, tall, big shelves. Maybe boxes to put on them as crates.
* Use the shelf with wheels, move things between main space and closet.

Located on the door on 22nd is an RFID Reader ( http://www.parallax.com/tabid/768/productid/517/default.aspx ). If you have an EM41000 family RFID Tag ( ex. http://www.parallax.com/Store/Microcontrollers/BASICStampModules/tabid/134/txtSearch/28161/List/1/ProductID/503/Default.aspx ) and the tag is added to the list of authorized tags you can open the door using it.

This page details the preferred access scheme for Sudo Room's location at 2141 Broadway in downtown Oakland.

Sudoers are provided with entrance to Sudo Room, the common space adjacent to Sudo Room, and the bathrooms shared on the 2nd floor.

To enter, Sudoers use the side-door on 22nd between Broadway and Telegraph. This door currently requires a physical key, but will soon be electrified.

Then, Sudoers take the elevator at the end of the hallway to reach the 2nd floor common room and entrance to Sudo Room. This door can be opened with a physical key, but Sudoers use a numerical keypad with individual passcodes.

The landlord called it a "crawlspace" but it's actually the SudoRoom Attic. And by "attic", picture a wide four-foot-tall football stadium full of death traps. Some hazards include:

* '''knob & tube wiring''': Bare exposed circuits. Touch the wrong thing and get electrocuted.
* '''hot water pipes''': I burned my arm on one, in my first minute up there.
* '''rusty nails''': They poke out everywhere, at eye level. I learned to duck my head, so it only caught my hair instead of blinding me.
* '''maintenance shaft''': Four story drop with no barrier, no warning. It's one of the first things you pass by. I almost rested my phone "on" it
* '''thin ceiling panels''': Do not walk on these. They cannot hold your weight. Walk on the beams only. Remember the floor is 10 feet below you - or if you're above the stairwell, more like 20 feet.
* '''darkness''': Bring a flashlight, preferably a biker light that straps to your head. If you stumble, a free hand could save your life.
* '''misleading lightbulb''': right away you will see a promising light fixture - don't trust it! Its switch doesn't work. It is permanently set to "on". If a lightbulb is screwed in, it will get too hot to remove easily - with no lightbulb, you have a bare circuit and another electrocution hazard. The solution? A lightbulb screwed in halfway. That's how we found it. So it shall remain.
* '''metallic dust''': It will get all over you, and in your lungs. Don't wear nice clothes!
* '''elevator''': Just don't even go NEAR this. Just don't.
* '''gas, cold water, exhaust lines''': they picked every possible place and angle to confound your movements. You'll be playing limbo and you'll get very sweaty and tired.

You'll need someone to feed wire from inside SudoRoom, and possibly someone else to receive it on the other end. You can't just pull on the wire because it will get kinked and caught on [all of the above]

The plus side: in order to access this delightful crawlspace, you only need to ask our landlord to unlock a single door to a single closet - this closet is located:

* behind our common area sink/kitchen
* to the right of the women's bathroom
* if you're standing at the circuit box, it's behind your right shoulder

Sudo Room is located in the Omni Oakland Commons Building, at the corner of 48th and Shattuck, in North Oakland.

The nearest major intersection is 51st and Shattuck, right next to the highway 24 on/off-ramps.

Our main entrance is the double door under the blue awning. The doorbell is up on the right.

One of Omni's members made a temporary, makeshift button-dinger, for those who can't reach it without assistance. If the dinger is missing, and you are unable to reach the doorbell on your own, please knock loudly and hopefully we'll hear you!

Members of the Omni can gain access through the use of our [[Door Access|electronic, card-based access system]]. We're currently working on improving this system, including a better, more easily accessible door! Updates coming soon!
