Sudoroom's official meetings are every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7pm, or sometimes as late as 7:30. They are bureaucratic, sometimes fun, and usually more functional than rumored. We try to handle conflicts respectfully.

== Etherpad ==

We keep our agenda on an etherpad. The etherpad is projected on a big screen for everyone to see. Anyone who knows the URL can collaboratively edit it on their laptop. After the meeting, its contents are copied to our wiki - that's how we keep record. Then we clear it for the next meeting and people can add items throughout the week. Ideally someone posts a summary to the mailing list, but that doesn't always happen.

Unfortunately, in the past our etherpad has caught the attention of online troll dens who like to overwhelm it and make it unusable. For this reason, we don't post the address online. Sorry! '''These addresses''' had been used in the past, and '''are obsolete''':

* Due to IRS requirements for a tax-deductible donation, it is looking like we will have to restructure the organization of the Omni. Sudo Room would have to be the official recipient of the donation.
* Rob - create other audio-visual/building maintenance organization?
* Matt: Can we say we change sudo's name?
* Marc: We should definitely change sudo's name as part of this process, pending hearing from IRS to see what's allowed
* Robb: We should talk to Kyle
* Loads of disuccsion not included in notes
* Lesley: Important to be explicit in split between legality and culture. Many of the distinctions can be artificial.
* Marc: Should be fine for how the board is structues.
* Matt: One direction is a logical function, or the opposite is it's completely abstract and only for the accountants
* Marc: Needs to be based on income, so many limitations. Need to make sure there isn't one culture that dominates.
* Dante: Things could change, like sudo has stopped growing but CCL still is
* Robb: What if some group had shared responsibilites but started losing money, just one half, and then the other could buy the remaining interest
* Marc: Tied to the building so not as likely.
* Marc: Also could have an issue with market value vs purchased value. There are also caps with regards to how much something can change per year and it might be based on the market value of the building.
* Lesley: Rents in sf actually fell in the last two months, so this might be a better time
* Matt: Our price is fixed
* Sigma: What is the worst possible outcome if we proceed with the split and then a small group of malicious actors attempted to exploit or destroy the omni?

* Marc: Extra things you can do to address these include contracts between the two organizations
* Tim: Can do deed restrictions with contracts so they couldn't sell
* Marc: Might not be able to completely restrict as there are some rights which can't be overriden by a contract
* Matt: More likely risk is lack of participation or resistance to participation which leads to a fiefdom which stagnates. Common examples like the granges, abc no rio in new york
* Marc: Can add some board members who aren't participating on a daily basis
* Robb: Often board members are good trusted
* Matt: Often I have the opposite sense where we would prefer and trust someone who is involved
* Vin: My friend is involved in lawsuit, where Monsanto funded board members to be part of national fraternity, so they own their building, but their membership in the grange was going to be revoked, and the national grange has the right to confiscate the building
* Matt: In NYC, there was a building claimed and turned into condos
* Matt: I am not happy about any of this, it sucks, but it seems like the only way

Hi, I'm Evan -- I work on programming -- especially audio and signal processing

What brings you to sudo room?
I recently quit my programming job and now I just work on creative programming projects to share with the world for free. Unfortunately this means I spend most of my time at my apartment with no one to talk to. I want to join Sudo Room so that I can work on my projects in a place with other people around.

What do you want to hack or learn at sudo room (if you know)?
Right now I'm working on http://homophone.me/ which is a useless Elm program that basically makes puns. I'm also teaching myself signal processing for various audio analysis and synthesis type things. My dream is to make sound design as straightforward as editing pictures in photoshop.

What do you want to share or teach at sudo room (if you know)?
When I collaborate with other programmers, I naturally take the role of a counselor and a mediator, asking follow-up questions until I understand everyone's point of view and never letting my own preferences get in the way. I have a wide variety of programming experience that I would love to share, but I never give unsolicited help. I never get tired of answering questions from self-directed learners who want help with anything from CSS to machine learning.
I've been Un-schooled as a kid -- "I like teaching, but not in a 'teachy' way..."

Sudoroom's official meetings are every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7pm, or sometimes as late as 7:30. They are bureaucratic, sometimes fun, and usually more functional than rumored. We try to handle conflicts respectfully.

We keep our agenda on an etherpad. The etherpad is projected on a big screen for everyone to see. Anyone who knows the URL can collaboratively edit it on their laptop. After the meeting, its contents are copied to our wiki - that's how we keep record. Then we clear it for the next meeting and people can add items throughout the week. Ideally someone posts a summary to the mailing list, but that doesn't always happen.

** I'm Eric, grew up in Kenya, I'm a farmer and my backgorund is indsutrial electronics and software engineering.

The thing that interest me especially being back in berkeley is that carbon-negative impact is really cool, biochar, water re-use, the controls are becoming super cheap -- can we marry them both -- monitoring the water and use more sustainable energy. I do astrophotography too -- you can get a portrait of you under the milky way!

** Alex: I've been moving around a lot, haven't been able to find a place as good. I've been working on two things -- one is an automatic storm water filter (it's own actuating device, so to know if things are actually being filtered) -- the idea is to move away from things that are mined, and make a biochar filter. I want to learn to use arduino and raspberry pi too!

** Eric: Um... people (caugh). Most of my problems today are "people problems"!

** I work on projects in sewing, videoart and I have been into animatronix, but kind of piecemeal (tails and eyebrows mainly). Other that, I try to incorporate that into sculpture, space, dance -- I like environments. Right now I'm making salmons.

1. Mission statement
What do you do?

The mission of Global Communication Services (GCS) is to provide community service for individuals, families, and community groups toward health consulting, health benefits, cultural exchange and immigrate support here in United States and international.
The mission of Youth Empowerment Services (YES) is to advance and support children, youth, and family on academic breakthroughs in life development, job placement and other activities focusing and envisioning a community where all young people have the opportunities and access to programs without restriction of race, cultural difference or socioeconomic status.

What happens in the world because you exist?

Our program serves the community by tutoring/mentoring and providing educational workshops. We also teach cultural art history, and different languages through workshops and events. Our services encompass problem solving approaches based on education and tapping into the cultural strengths and living experiences of African immigrants and Black African American youth and families. We help to uncover the individuals hidden talents and strengths which leads to healthy self esteem, individual and group self-reliance. Our program is open to all ethnic groups who choose to excel and claim their genius!

2. Origin and group history
How did you start?

Originally, Global Communication Services (GCS) was established in 2012 as my (Almazâ€™s) consulting business to provide community service for individuals, families, and community groups toward health consulting, health benefits, immigrate support. Which included language interpreting and translating services. I had people working with me doing the same thing. As a part of GCS we taught cultural literacy for African immigrant youth, like cultural dance, language; as well as sports and hiking and camping trip to Yosemite National Park. After a long time personal experience working with immigrant families and being one of the reader for 13 afterschool programs at the City of Oakland in 2013. I seen the main problem children face especially around the low-income families and how new immigrant dealt within the public school system. At the end of 2014 decided to incorporate a few staff members to GCS and enhance the youth program, YES, which will focus on youth academic and life development support.

How does your group make decisions?

Our group makes decision collectively by majority vote if necessary to do so. So fare we donâ€™t have any conflicts or misunderstanding, each staff member contributes to the program cooperatively.

What have you done?

We have helped several youth with their academic work, job placement, health and wellness training. We host community based cultural events and workshops. We are a pioneer collective group with different cultural and educational backgrounds. We work collectively with community groups locally, nationally and internationally. Our staff meets at least once per month.

3. Participation in the Omni
Why are you interested in becoming a member? How does your group intend to use the space? What are your needs?

Our mission and the objectives of the Omni are aligned. We both are working diligently to improve and empower individuals and the community.
We also enjoy the location of the Omni. Hosting events at the Omni would be of great value to our team.
Becoming a part of the ownership team is also a very exciting opportunity for our organization.
We would like to be fiscally sponsored by the Omni.

How does your group intend to use the space?

We intend to use the space for workshops, classroom trainings, events, rehearsals, and collective member meetings.

What are your needs?

Our need is to have space at the Omni as a member collective. We will use the space to have locked storage, books, and a table for small class meetings. We will also have larger events like fundraisers, health trainings, or music and cultural programs that we would like to hold in the larger common spaces.

4. Group finances and paying rent?
What does your group do to support itself financially? What is your best plan for contributing your potential share of rent to the Omni?
Please include relevant financial statements, documentation of sufficient income (e.g. balance sheet, bank statement profit & loss statement).

We have about $500 from the community fundraiser events and we are planning to charge sliding scale admission for workshops, classroom trainings, and other large music events. We have been invited to apply for several government and private grants. Our anticipated largest funding source for our youth project will be coming from grants and monthly member donations.

We propose to pay $100 a month in rent plus utilities for the first three-months until we receive grants to support our program. After the first three months we will pay $200 for rent plus utilities and would like to become the stewards of the blue classroom and have priority use of that space. We do not plan to charge youth or low-income families for our services however, we do accept donations.

We do not currently have a bank account. As a fiscally sponsored project we would open a sub account under the Omniâ€™s bank account.

5. Dedicated space
If your group would like some dedicated space at the Omni, what square footage and what features are you looking for? Which specific rooms do you feel might be suitable?

We are proposing to steward and maintain the Blue classroom and keep a locked storage cabinet there after our first three months of membership. We would have priority for our youth classes and family consulting, and would make the space available to other groups when we were not using it.

6. Other contributions to the Omni
This question should inspire some imagination. We are exploring ideas to pay rent and purchase the building in the long-term. The basic plan is for each group paying a share of rent. Potential plans include groups sharing profit from their activities, producing Omni events, and booking other events. What is the best-case scenario for using the Omni space to further support your group?

One of the ways that we may be able to generate funds is by hosting monthly events. At first this income may be slow yet if we continue we will look to attract sponsors and also grow our attendance of our events.

We also plan to produce mutually beneficial community programs for the Omni that would entail youth related film screenings, concerts & workshopsâ€¦

We can help the Omni by participating on the working groups. Almaz has been volunteering with the Commons working group for about 2 months.

We hope that this project will greatly expand the scope of the Omniâ€™s community and increase its visibility. There is a chance that funders and donors introduced to the Omni through our Program would financially support the project of the Omni. We plan to bring more African and African American community members and others who would increase the diversity of the Omniâ€™s community in many ways, including inviting programming for and by community groups who represent our neighborhood and community.

Wanda Sabir of KPFA and Sophie of KPOO are also media supporters of YES. We can mention the Omni on our radio broadcast and other media collaborations.

7. Additional information?
Is there any other information that you think would be useful for us to know about your group?

Our collective will have diverse group members, artists, business owners, educators, musicians, authors, which all those who organize and those who participate are all considered collective members. Will also have volunteers temporary member participates from deferent community groups, which include college/university students and community educators. All participates in our program would not necessarily be considered members unless they show constant involvement at YES program.

Timing was broken on Lotus 1000 Sewing Machine. The needle would dip to its lowest point but it wouldn't be caught and wound around the second thread from the bobbin.

To fix it, we took off the front storage for thread (lift and roll to the right), then took off the bottom. Once the bottom was exposed, the holder of the bobbin was anchored with three screws to the shaft. By loosening these, the bobbin cage can rotate independently of the shaft. To align the timing, we put the needle at the lowest point and the claw of the bobbin cage just about to catch it. Once aligned, the three screws must be tightened while keeping the axle tight to maintain good gear contact. A trick to keep this easy was to only turn by hand in the "forward" direction (counter clockwise looking down on the dial). This keep the teeth of the gears in nice contact. Then the bobbin cage was held in a known place while the needle was rotated down its lowest. Finally, the three screws were tightened. Make sure to do some test sewing before putting it all back togetherr!

Sudoroom's official meetings are every Wednesday at 7pm, or sometimes as late as 7:30. They are bureaucratic, sometimes fun, and usually more functional than rumored. We try to handle conflicts respectfully.

== Etherpad ==

We keep our agenda on an etherpad. The etherpad is projected on a big screen for everyone to see. Anyone who knows the URL can collaboratively edit it on their laptop. After the meeting, its contents are copied to our wiki - that's how we keep record. Then we clear it for the next meeting and people can add items throughout the week. Ideally someone posts a summary to the mailing list, but that doesn't always happen.

Unfortunately, in the past our etherpad has caught the attention of online troll dens who like to overwhelm it and make it unusable. For this reason, we don't post the address online. Sorry! These addresses had been used in the past, and are obsolete:

= Brainstorming How To Help Omni Commons Cover Budget Shortfall =
* Matt gives background: Omni is a collective of collective. The master tenant has a board of directors which are representatives from every collective. In every meeting one representative is appointed to give the opinion of the collective to the board. Income is mainly from the member collectives paying rent and renting the big space. Fundraising. In the past took non-interest loans from members.
Sudo room currently paid 2k a month. Other collectives pay different amounts and not necessarily connected to the space they are using.
Need to cover the shortfall and then buy the building.

We will trial run for the month of October, with a report-back and proposal to extend at the first delegates meeting in November (likely Nov 5th).

Sudoroom's official meetings are every Wednesday at 7pm, or sometimes as late as 7:30. They are bureaucratic, sometimes fun, and usually more functional than rumored. We try to handle conflicts respectfully.

== Etherpad ==

We keep our agenda on an etherpad. The etherpad is projected on a big screen for everyone to see. Anyone who knows the URL can collaboratively edit it on their laptop. After the meeting, its contents are copied to our wiki - that's how we keep record. Then we clear it for the next meeting and people can add items throughout the week. Ideally someone posts a summary to the mailing list, but that doesn't always happen.

juul: Jerome physically attached (attacked?) one of our members. This is a violation of our safe space policy. Even if Jerome and the member in question can resolve this through mediation Jerome has demonstrated that he will escalate a verbal conflict to physical violence (twice?) and as such we should not allow him in the sudo/omni space again.
