Title of Class: Vanilla: From Bean to Ice Cream
* ''Class Facilitator'': '''Ray the Ice Cream Man''' has made ice cream for Bi-Rite Creamery, iScream, & Silbermann's. He lead the innovation lab (the infamous NOM Team) at Fentons. His last gig was the ice cream designer for the opening of the Ice Cream Bar in San Francisco. Ray is currently launching his own venture, Atomic Ice Cream, and starting a motorcyle gang.
* ''Description'': Vanilla is yummy. And fascinating. This is a class into the history, botany, and appreciation of one of the most ubiquitous tastes and smells in our culture. We will make vanilla extract (everybody goes home with a bottle of extract), taste single origin vanilla ice creams and learn how to make a Philadelphia style vanilla ice cream (everybody goes home with a container of ice cream). There will be a low class fee for materials (approximately $5) and an empty pint container for generous donations.
* Title of Class: From Phone Phreaks to Wiki Leaks: A History of Ethical Hacking
* Class Facilitator: Andrew (@M57C, irc: mstc)

Before "White Hat" hackers and "Black Hat" hackers there were "Ethical Hackers". These groups and individuals may not have always stayed within the confines of the law, but followed a well defined ethic. This is the story of MIT pranks, the golden age of the BBS, The Great Hacker War, Steve Jackson Games vs. The US Secret Service, Old school hacking tech ( Blue Boxing, Red Boxing, War Dialing, etc ), New Hack City and the rise of the Cult of The Dead Cow, Free Kevin!, Hacktivismo, and more...

The Hacker Manifesto

by

+++The Mentor+++

Written January 8, 1986

Another one got caught today, it's all over the papers. "Teenager Arrested in Computer Crime Scandal", "Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering"...

Damn kids. They're all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain, ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder what made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him?

I am a hacker, enter my world...

Mine is a world that begins with school... I'm smarter than most of the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me...

Damn underachiever. They're all alike.

I'm in junior high or high school. I've listened to teachers explain for the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. "No, Ms. Smith, I didn't show my work. I did it in my head..."

Damn kid. Probably copied it. They're all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this is cool. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it's because I screwed it up. Not because it doesn't like me... Or feels threatened by me.. Or thinks I'm a smart ass.. Or doesn't like teaching and shouldn't be here...

Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike.

And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing through the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an electronic pulse is sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board is found. "This is it... this is where I belong..." I know everyone here... even if I've never met them, never talked to them, may never hear from them again... I know you all...

Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They're all alike...

You bet your ass we're all alike... we've been spoon-fed baby food at school when we hungered for steak... the bits of meat that you did let slip through were pre-chewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by sadists, or ignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us willing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.

This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us criminals. We seek after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like. My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual, but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike.

==Sudo Door Intercom==
There is an old intercom system that is wired from the [[#Outside Facing Door|outside facing door]] up to the [[phone closet]]. One the first things we did when we got in to the space was to reconnect this intercom and attach it to a phone we had lying around. Here's a picture:

[[File:sudoroom-intercom.jpg|thumb|none]]

Right now if the space is occupied you can get in without a key by:

# Pressing the intercom button outside the door
# Waiting for a sudoer to answer
# Saying "I'm here for sudoroom", or "My voice is my passport"
# Waiting for an awesome sudoer to come and let you in
# Saying thank you!

==Door Open Indicator==
This project will detect if the [[#Inside Door|Inside Door]] is open and share that information.

Our current plan involves using a TI MSP4302553 via the TI Launch Pad to generate a tone. When the door is closed, the tone will stop. Anything that can pickup the audio will be able to detect if the door is open. We have a python script that does just that. Here is a picture of the tone generator in progress:
==Outside Facing Door==

This door can now be opened via wifi (SSID: sudodoor) with a password. The door is electronically connected to a Raspberry Pi server with a USB wifi access point.

You can also open the outside facing door using an EM41000 Family RFID Tag and the Parallax RFID Card Reader. Read more about [[RFID Door Access]]
==Inside Door==

Sudoroom has its own tiny hallway with trash cans and a private elevator opening. The hallway is technically outside Sudoroom, and the door separating it should be locked when nobody's around. As the elevator is the primary path for automated entry, this door's lock will be controlled by a tiny Raspberry Pi. Some preliminary info about this box:
==Sudo Door Intercom==

==Door Open Indicator==

This door can now be opened via wifi (SSID: sudodoor) with a password. The door is electronically connected to a Raspberry Pi server with a USB wifi access point.

==='''''Hacking Menstruation: Making Cloth Pads Out of Recycled Clothing'''''===
'''Saturday, May 4th, 2013: 2p-??''' [[image:cloth pad devil boyfriend.jpg|thumb|right]]
*As Aunt Flo always said, "cloth pads make the Earth happy and don't bust your pocket book!" This workshop is intended for people who menstruate and for people who have friends who menstruate (and want to make them lovely presents!). We will go over a dizzying array of cool lady products beyond the cloth pad, and have fun cost-comparisons of different options.
*A special educational interlude will be performed by Craig, who will be discussing the [[Phage therapy|Phage Therapy he is developing]] to do away with antibiotic-resistent gonorrhea!
===Fascinating Friday Films===
Let's include in this weekly event mind-expanding movies on the realm of sex and sexuality.
*[http://bikeporntour.blogspot.com/2013/03/hop-on-porny-express_15.html Bike Smut] screening!
===Interactive Pheromone Station===
Based off the old Exploratorium installation titled "''The Olfaction of Attraction''", explorers had access to little squeeze bottles with human pheromones in them. Depending on one's genes and gender, one may find the smell either repulsive or attractive. It's fantastic seeing two people, one with a look of disgust and the other with a pleased smile, trying to reconcile their different perceptions.
==="Quantified Sex" Experiments===
Heart rate monitors, skin flushing, eeg, etc. [[image:light-interactive teledildonics.jpg|thumb|right]]
*This relates to Ned and Maggie Mayhem of [http://psigasm.net/]: "PSIgasm was conceived in 2010 by an HIV prevention specialist and an experimental physicist, both of whom moonlight as queer porn performers and are active in the Bay Area sex positive scene. The project revolves around measurement devices that can be used as sex toys, simultaneously getting people off and monitoring physiological responses correlated with arousal and orgasm."
==Inclusivity==
===Community Infrastructure===
How do we make the hackerspace a more inclusive space for people of all intersections of human sexuality?
*Let's create a sexual health box, including menstrual and safe sex products and information. Thinking in terms of the analog world and how people interact within it is really important! [[image:Condomerie Amsterdam.jpg|thumb|right]] [[image:condom high fashion.jpg|thumb|right]]
==Resources and People to Connect With==
* Good Vibes. OH WAIT, Vicky knows Joani Blank, the founder!
**The Feelmore
*FemSexComm/FemSex
*Arse Electronika
*[http://slashdong.org/ Slashdong]: Kyle Machulis is a whip-smart brash software engineer who, on the side, blogs about teleldildonics (using haptic and telecommunications technology to facilitate long-distance sex), DIY sex toys, and other mash-ups of sex and tech. He's really fun.
*''The Archaeology of Vice''. Kari Jones and Liz Clevinger work in the archaeology programs at the Presidio of San Francisco. Among the things unearthed? Well, the archeological record suggests that, shockingly, soldiers stationed there liked sex, based on the wide range of vintage porn, prophylactics, and medically-dubious STD cures dug up in the Presidio." Notes from Sudo Radio session at 1st annual [[State of the Room]] Unconference 12/8/12:

'''attendees:'''

marina: some audio production

max: a quick learner!

len: interested in organizing

mark b: sf liberation radio news show, enemy combatant radio (online). news and interviews. if we have a transmitter, would be good to do live radio and record it. live radio is easier because it takes less time to produce (don't have to edit). experienced with tech.: can host streams, build transmitters, has set of modules for drupal that allows you to list schedule of shows and it records the stream during those timeslots.

august: "Camp caster" (broadcasting solution). experience with prod & tech, used to do weekly show in austria (focused on art radio), wrote multi user streaming engine, works with pure data, (userradio: reads all kinds of audio content. lets people upload things to the server in any format; no need to convert format. lets people make a live radio show together online. when you raise channel 1, everyone sees channel 1 raised.)

jae: interested in connecting spaces together (sudoroom with creative spaces) in audio and video. would be good to share time of the day with multiple spaces. also youth radio is nearby, many places that do audio are in our community. they are resources.

ajay: not much experience, interested in community.

ryanj: loves music, wants to allow a lot of ppl to contribute playlists/audio/music content, wants to have a web interface to coordinate scheduling and playlist creation. "diy kit for setting up your own radio - hardware and software"

rusty: experience with audio for film, records in studios, web work for studios, works with ccrm, open source multi track editing program, knows how to record, mix, work mics, operate equipment.

garrett: radio show in college, was a recording and studio engineer at oberlin, fundraiser where people gave away radios just tuned to their radio station. this would be fun to build!

'''3 components to move forward:'''
* 1) infrastructure - building the space itself, ensuring that we have all the necessary equipment
* 2) distribution - livestream or broadcast? folks are interested in setting up livestream first
* 3) content - determining what kind of content everyone is interested in producing, how many hours per day we'd like to be online, etc.

'''equipment needs:'''
* server (CHECK)
* analog to digital conversion
* pre emp mic (2)
* 2 pc's
* soundproofing (CHECK?)
* reflections ($99) sm57's
* 2 xlr cables (CHECK)
* 2 headphones

'''legal issues:'''
internet radio: to play licensed content, typically radio stations make a deal with radio content distributors. they want a lot of data on what you play. if one doesn't commercialize and has perhaps only a hundred listeners, there is a chance that practically this won't be an issue.

'''odds and ends:'''
* sudo radio 2.0 - wants to generate digital audio. interested in one night generating audio :) supercollider. can build synthesizers. can build mics. can build speakers. build headphones.
* transmitter on the roof, transmitter here with antenna going onto the roof? connectivity from here to the roof?

==Access to resources==
===Need===
Sudoers are '''people who agree to the [[Articles of Association]]''' and '''in return receive benefits''', such as access to Sudo Room's resources.
Therefore, it is imperative that a barrier for accessing the space be implemented. Further, it is the case that non-members do not have the same entitlement to access Sudo Room's resources without a member present. The '''barrier to entry to become a member is really very low''', so membership is really agreeing to the community's principles in order to get totally fluid access have keys to enter at any time.

===Disability===
Sudo Room is wheelchair accessible, with an elevator and ADA-compliant restroom on the 2nd floor.

==Public Access==
Sudo Room is committed to public access, the ability for non-members (the public at large) to visit, and to utilize Sudo Room's resources for community improvement, especially along the lines of Sudo Room values.

''Sudo Room is an open, non-hierarchical, collaborative community of humans, including tech developers, citizen scientists, activists, artists--and all combinations in between and beyond!--who are interested in and working towards social change. Our goal is to create the first inclusive, dedicated hackerspace in downtown Oakland, to share ideas and projects in citizen science, digital citizenship and literacy, environmental sustainability, community engagement, and self-government. Sudo Room is committed to access, empowerment, transparency, and public/social good. ==Goals==
[[Sudo_room/methodology|Read and Inform a potential methodology for Sudo Room.]]
* To found a creative community hacker space in the East Bay, specifically in Oakland, CA.
* Establish a platform and space committed to:
** Citizen science
** Democratic Culture
** Access to Knowledge
** Freedom to Connect
** Non-technical (humanities, social science, the environment/ environmental justice, arts, crafts, all the squishy stuff!) and technical knowledge (including transitions and bridges between the two) --
*** the useful arts & sciences?
*** information, data, knowledge, wisdom?
*** memes, genes, bits, and atoms?
*** Non-technical knowledge includes but is not limited to expertise in fields or disciplines that can be largely independent of technology. Also includes non-academic realms of knowledge.
** Digital/Online Citizenship - Netizen Rights & Freedoms
** Doing stuff to make our community openly accessible.
**: ''...to do something more with digital and network technology''
** Environmental sustainability
** Education and mentorship
** Community engagement
** Public access
* To become a center for active hacking projects but also a destination where speakers on the areas listed above may be hosted, and where folks may go for skill sharing classes

For examples, check out our list of potential [[Sudo room/projects|projects]] or read about ones we've shared on [http://sudoroom.org/category/projects/ our website].

= Amplifier and speakers =

The amplifier and speakers were donated by Jehan.

The amp is hooked up to the laptop on the shelf, which is the space server. Its hostname is hairball.local (using zeroconf, which should be default enabled on most gnu/linux and OS X machines, but not on windows).

The space server is running a pulseaudio server which is announced using zeroconfig.

== Streaming audio to the space server ==

In order to stream audio from your computer to space.local, you need to have pulseaudio installed. This is default in Ubuntu. You also need some way of switching between local sound output and network sound output.

=== Command line method ===

'''warning: ''' this hasn't been tested

Open a new terminal and do:

export PULSE_SERVER=tcp:space.local:4713
pacmd set-default-sink 0

Anything you play from applications launched from that terminal should then play through the space audio server.

=== GUI method ===

Check if padevchooser is available for your system:

apt-cache search padevchooser

If it is, then install it:

sudo aptitude install padevchooser

If not (it's not available on newer Ubuntu systems), then you can use pasystray. You need to add this PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:christoph-gysin/pasystray
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install pasystray

If you're using Unity (default in Ubuntu) allow systray icons from all applications (since Unity blocks them):

gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "['all']"

Now reload unity:

unity --replace

Start padevchooser or pasystray.

A system tray icon should appear in the top right corner. Click it and choose pulse@hairball as the default server, then as default sink, choose the option called something like "pulse@hairball: Buil-in Audio Analog Stereo".

Start some program that plays audio (if the program was already running you may have to restart it after changing sinks).

The audio should play out of the sudo room sound system speakers.
Andrewhttps://sudoroom.org/mediawiki/index.php?title=Audio&diff=1002Audio2012-12-05T08:00:28Z
Andrew: /* Command line method */

sudo room is using the Labitrack inventory tracking software from the [https://labitat.dk/ Labitat] hackerspace.

Labitrack allows simple 2D barcode labeling and wiki-based annotation of items in the space.

To try it out, you need to be connected to the sudo room LAN/wifi (the ssid you want is currently "Sudo Room Closet WiFi"). Then simply point you web-browser at http://space.local

If you are running Windows then you will be unable to use .local addresses, since Windows does not support Zero Configuration Networking. OS X does support zeroconf, though Apple calls it Bonjour. You should be able to enable zeroconf support support for windows by installing [https://support.apple.com/kb/DL999 Apples zeroconf for windows]. I can confirm that this works on Windows 7.

When you create a new item in the web app, a label will be immediately printed on the printer currently located near the far corner of the main bookcase. The sticker paper loaded in the printer may be too wide (we need to order the correct kind), so it's best to cut it in half, width-wise.

When you scan the 2D barcode, you will be taken to e.g. http://o.sudoroom.org/1 where the number at the end refers to the ID of the scanned item. This will immediately redirect you to http://sudoroom.org/wiki/O:1 where you can add information about the item.

A future goal is that the information you enter when you create the label will automatically be entered into the wiki page for the item. For now, you can only look up that information by going to http://space.local

The point of the inventory system is:

*Document the tools, projects and people in sudo room.
:Item wiki pages should provide info such as instructions for use, links to manuals or contact person email.
*Help people keep the space organized
:Item wiki pages should include the item home (where the item belongs). That way even new people can help keep the space organized simply by scanning items and putting them back in their home location.
Andrewhttps://sudoroom.org/mediawiki/index.php?title=Door_Access&diff=945Door Access2012-12-02T03:06:13Z
Andrew:

==Sudo Door Intercom==

==Door Open Indicator==

==Active Projects==
You can find our active projects on the [[Projects]] page.

==Proposed Projects==
* Meetup hosting
** e.g. [http://digitalcitizensproject.org/ Digital Citizens Project]
* Cheap, D.I.Y. sensor "throwies" (throw simple sensors like light, sound, etc so they'll stick to anything and you can measure remotely). Need to be under $20 each.
* DNA bar-coding projects!
** The Bay Area Dandelion Project
This is an attempt to quantify the genetic diversity of the Bay Area dandelions through three major approaches: barcoding, microsatellites, and outline-based geometric morphometrics. The lab work will have to be done at Biocurious, but collection can take place across the Bay Area. Dandelions are fascinating from both social and evolutionary angles, and this project will help build expertise and skill in the area of DNA Barcoding which can be applied to some of the projects below.
** Check December Issue of Consumer Reports
** http://bookhling.wordpress.com/2011/05/01/barcode-the-world/
** http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/22/science/22fish.html?em
** http://www.urbanbarcodeproject.org/
** Cool, convenient kits from http://cofactorbio.com/
** Another kit: testing for GMOs! Biocurious is a resource.
***Work with the http://foodcollective.org/
*** Would be awesome to identify mushrooms, lots of mushroom lovers in the area! [[User:Wrought|Wrought]] 01:52, 19 December 2011 (CET)
** EMG scanning muscles, control things with small potentials
*** Some biosensing resources (code, parts...) http://makezine.com/26/primer/
* Robotics, mechanics
**Hack a roomba to take air samples matched with GPS data (use a rolled up filter to create a timestamp).
** Maybe start with a cheap little platform like [http://buildsmartrobots.ning.com/profiles/blogs/hacking-the-hexbug-tm-spider-with-the-emgrobotics-msp430g2553rcb- this one]
** Note: we have a bag with CD drive parts, to scavenge motors and gears from - help yourself!
* Bio printing using old inkjet printers.
* [[theportofoakland.com|theportofoakland.com]]
* [[Open WiFi Oaksterdam|Open WiFi Oaksterdam]]

==Proposed Meta Projects==
* Possibly re-implementations from [[labitat]] by Marc:
** Magnetic-strip card ID system (use any of your the cards in your wallet as sudo room ID)!
** Fridge food checkout debit/credit system
** QR code (phone-scanable barcodes) system for all tools, objects in the space with the barcode linking you to the object's page on our wiki. Essentially, create a history and detailed set of documentation for all sudoroom objects.
[[Wishlist]] - Stuff sudoroom needs

Sudo Room is an open, non-hierarchical, collaborative community of humans, including tech developers, citizen scientists, activists, artists--and all combinations in between and beyond!--who are interested in and working towards social change.

Sudoers have a great diversity of interests and we emphasize respect and solidarity among ourselves and with others.

[[Sudo_room/methodology|Read and Inform a potential methodology for Sudo Room.]]

==Meetings==
* Our weekly planning meetings take place:
** Every '''Wednesday''' evening from '''7-9pm''' at [https://maps.google.com/maps?q=2141+Broadway+St,+oakland,+ca 2141 Broadway St., Oakland, CA] (near the 19th St BART).
* Anyone interested in learning more about Sudo Room, meeting awesome people, and participating in our emergent community is welcome to attend!

==Contact==
* Many thanks to hackerspaces.org for our initial email list: [http://lists.hackerspaces.org/mailman/listinfo/sudoroom sign up here].

==Plan==
;P ?

===='''Current Critical Momentum'''====
We are now:
* '''Working on the space [[infrastructure]].'''
* '''Forging a [[Sudo_room/Compact|Compact]].'''
We made headway with:
* How we make [[Sudo_room/decisions|decisions]].
* Developing our [[Sudo_room/Governance_Structure|Governance Structure]]
* How we create [[Sudo_room/income|income]].
* How we define [[Sudo_room/membership|membership]].
* We have a [[Sudo_room/room|room]], are seeking more room?

==Next Steps==
As per discussions and polling, we are moving toward these steps:
* August 10th - [[Sudo room/banking|Get bank account]]
* August 24th - Expand membership, get a sense of paying members
* August 31st - Get first payment
* September 3rd - Rent for Space

===Research===
* Conduct [[Sudo_room/research|research on other hackerspaces]], exploring their models of community, governance and funding.
* Create a list of [[open knowledge ecosystem|open knowledge ecosystem]] organizations in the Bay Area.
* Examine potential [[Sudo room/Tax Structure Research|tax structures]]

'''''Needs to be Updated'''''
===Goals===

===Approaches===
* Build a community and group of members, grow our ideas together, and [[Sudo room/open a space|open a space]] before the end of 2012.
* Create online presence and communications infrastructure
** Utilize our [http://sudoroom.org/ website and blog] more effectively!
** Beg our artsy friends to fulfill our [[sudo room/design needs|design needs]].
** Make a video for [[Sudo room/funding opportunities#Crowd-funding|crowd-funding opportunities]]
* Hold weekly meetup / salon.
* Collect membership dues to start building a budget as a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voluntary_association Voluntary <nowiki>[</nowiki>membership<nowiki>]</nowiki> Association].
* Apply to relevant [[sudo room/funding opportunities|grants, fellowships, and various funding opportunities]].

==Donations==
===Electronics Donations===
* Sudo Room is reviewing its policy on electronics donations, and will be compiling a list of recyclable goods/costs before Wednesday, Dec. 5th. so that we can form a policy around material electronics donations, and other electronics in the space.
* This is still under advisement until our next meeting where it will be an agenda item, and then there may be temporary action or continued advisement.

==Projects==
*Browse and contribute to our [[Projects|Active Projects]]
*Read (and contribute to) our [[Sudo room/projects|list of proposed projects]] to see (and inform) what kinds of projects we will be able to do in this space! You can also see projects we've featured on [http://sudoroom.org/category/projects/ our website].
==Sudo Door Intercom==

==Door Open Indicator==

==Proposed Projects==
* Meetup hosting
** e.g. [http://digitalcitizensproject.org/ Digital Citizens Project]
* Cheap, D.I.Y. sensor "throwies" (throw simple sensors like light, sound, etc so they'll stick to anything and you can measure remotely). Need to be under $20 each.
* DNA bar-coding projects!
