sudoroom meeting Wednesday 2016-06-08

icebreaker: What should the official religion/cult of sudo room be?

intros

  • matt, he/him, historically kopimism, cults suck
  • dante, he/him, I don't think cults suck -- cult of the great penguin rules! because of the linux penguin
  • matt, not an "official" "member" in the "sudo" "room", official cult should be ancestor worship.
  • lindsey, prospective member, moved here from brooklyn recently been lurking, the official cult should be "electronic microflora"
  • chris b, I think the cults a great thing, I don't know, uh, over to you?
  • dan, I don't believe in cults, but I heard about "benism" I don't know what it involves, it might be a little narcissistic...
  • robb, he, sudo should definitely become some sort of cult of a goddess -- maybe all goddess, there's a bunch I suppose... or maybe the goddess of infinite space
  • jenny, she/her, I'm gonna second robb's proposal -- it's cults all the way down, so we should all have our own cult.
    • defining aspect is a charming leader personality, charismatic --
      • Marc: can we make up a leader?
      • Jenyy: The goddess of infinite space!
      • Dante: What about a cat? Nyan cat!
      • Robb: "Nyan Cat the Goddess of Infinite Space"
  • Tim, not officially a sudo member, I might consider joining if you would accept me! I know some of you guys, you were at one of my settlements I build over a weekend. I'm still over there ;) -- as for a cult, I was thinking about (beneath the) planet of the apes, worshiping a nuclear bomb god -- maybe the robot arm as a god?
  • Marc, him/they, I think we should have a cult of the day (cult du jeur)
  • Max, he/him, maybe "amorphous" I guess... yeah an amorphous cult, but no dreams allowed. Amorphous with an "a"
    • Dante: If an animated gif runs forever, is it technically perpetual motion?

ffaust: Hack what thou wilt and spare no Expense.

    • Robb: That is beautiful. 'hack what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.'
  • Kyle, he/him, i dunno, Biology? in solidarity with our neighbors?
  • Tenzin, he/him, Zen
  • Myf, he/him, Official religion is there is no official religion
  • Ari, he/him, Terasin
  • nobody said cult of the Dead cow...wtf?

PROMPT: There are no wrong answers

  • Would you like to very briefly introduce yourself?
    • I work on projects in sewing, videoart and I have been into animatronix, but kind of piecemeal (tails and eyebrows mainly). Other that, I try to incorporate that into sculpture, space, dance -- I like environments. Right now I'm making salmons.
    • My name is Tim. I'm a software/hardware engineer. I'm also an artist. I learned to program by doing computer art way back in the day. (comments on sudo room looking like home). Currently working on a couple of mobile device apps. I write video games for raspberry pi and android. Tim, I'm a software/hardware engineer. I'm also an artist. I learned how to program by doing computer art back in the day before anyone was doing it. This looks like some shipping containers I have out in the desert -- it's like home! I have a place like this in my home, it's not as big as this, but same deal! I'm working on some projects for mobile devices, I make videogames branching off of raspberry pi and moving into android. Open source video game engines, with cross-platform webkits.
    • I'm Chris. I used to hang out here a lot. I took a break. Haven't been doing much lately other than trying to keep my bike running and finding cool things to trash (dumpster dive). I like to sew too. I like music. I think the cults are great but... I'm Chris, I used to hang out here alot, by mutual decree I took a break. I haven't been doing much lately but keeping my bike running and finding things in the trash. Anything else I should cover, or...? I like to sew too, I like music, if it's interesting I might do it or at least express interest in it. I don't really think about this stuff much, I either do it or I don't do it. I'm a great prospect for membership. I'm here! It at least implies I have some interest.
  • What brings you to sudo room?
    • Tonight I'm working on props for a performance with matt this saturday. I've been going to CCL meetings. Particularly interested in sewing. Interested in soft circuitry and wearables. Looking for space and facilities but also ?
    • Wanted to crawl out of my woods and come out and hang out with us and collaborate. Lots of amazing things happening!
    • Jake. It was his fault. Needed to back up a harddrive and got sent to sudo room. I came for getting some kind of understanding
  • What do you want to hack or learn at sudo room (if you know)?
    • L: Using the embroidery machine. Combining soft materials with electronics.
    • T: Javascript sessions / hardware hacking. Alternative energy. Video games.
    • C: I too need to sew. Necessity. Fellowship! Wants to fix the industrial sewing machine.
  • What do you want to share or teach at sudo room (if you know)?
    • L: Hopefully i can share a bit of skills in sewing or sculpture. I can also offer some non-material skills: Helping out when I can. Contributing to the space. Cleaning? However it takes place or manifests.
    • T: Programming, looking at it from an artistic /creative background. Autistic, so very different way of looking at the world... maps directly onto programming, like to talk about problem-solving approaches. Just came up with a novel DDOS attack out of the blue... blew their whole cache out, takes low bandwidth. Randomly sample API endpoint (you'll blow the cache by mapping the entire address space).

If you're hacking an API that has a unique ID, can

    • C: "Keep it real" that's all I can do. Sure, I guess. I don't know, I'll just try to contribute. I'm generally helpful,

  • What's your plan to abolish sexual violence, police brutality and white supremacy? in 10 words or less
    • L: Imagining alternatives to existing realities through creativity and alien abductions.
    • T: My grandfather was an activist til he was 96. FBI was monitoring him his whole life.
    • C: I do that shit every day.
  • What's your plan to end the anthropocene extinction, world hunger, global warming and global inequality? in 10 words or less
    • L: Repeat my answer. I stand by my methods.
    • T: I try to practice it before I say anything.
    • C: I don't buy anything, I just eat and wear trash. Everything I own from garbage -- true story. Chris is literally made of garbage by now.
  • What's your plan to ensure freedom and privacy of communication for all? in 10 words or less
    • L: Write in a diary. Create content without likes.
    • T: Cryptography.
    • C: I'm a libertarian so I mind my own business. Your privacy is fine with me and your freedom is fine with
  • expectations Sudo Room is part of the omni commons and as such, we take the omni commons statement of solidarity and safer space policy seriously. These policies include expected codes of conduct and the consequences of unacceptable behavior. As a member, you are expected to both act according to the code of conduct and also to be a part of acting to counter unacceptable behavior (we don't let mistreatment slide). Is this going to be a problem for you? (Ideally this should include the group going over the statement of solidarity and the expected behavior and consequences of unexpected behavior section of the safer space policy to make sure the person understands what's expected of them.)
    • L: No, thank you for having a safer spaces policy.
    • T: No
    • C: No, provisionally, but I'll read them.
  • Have you ever been banned, asked to take a break, or similar, from a hackerspace or any other collective?
    • L: Nooo
    • T: No
    • C: Yes, from here!
  • What are the best ways to contact you?
    • L: phone but email is lindseyzacheroff@gmail.com or on fbook etc
    • T: email autonomous666@gmail.com
    • C: email trickwolf4526@gmail.com
  • What is your schedule like? Do you have particular times that you think you'll be around? You should check out our regular events!
    • L: work M-Th so after 7pm, Fri/sat/sun afternoons
    • T: Attend like Javascript meetups, maybe hardware hacking, etc.
    • C: Try to be out by midnight, no more late night shit.
  • Explain the next steps in the membership process and what they should expect

"Give a man a cardboard fish and he'll be confused for a day. Teach a man to make a fake fishing rod and he'll be confused for the rest of his life?" He'll want to ride a bicycle for the rest of his life.

omni proposals

Update: Big Switcheroo

  • Our delegate abstained, there has been a big move of people in the building Liberated Lens --> Phat Beets --> Buried Seeds room

Proposal: Art Bison in the ticket booth room

  • Space that is the only wheelchair-accessible room with a door that closes
  • ABDC has wheelchair users in their collective
  • Robb: Kinda makes sense since they're the only collective so far that's had need for a wheelchair-accessible room. They'll grow out of that space eventually
  • Matt: Discussed 6 month term to review it
  • Jenny: Just had a group tonight, a trans writers workshop, that needed an accessible space and really appreciated being able to use that room. Paid us $50 for two hours.
    • Marc: How much is Art Bison offering?
      • Jenny: $200 moving up to $800 (maybe)
        • Robb: And making shirts
          • Jenny: Still waiting for another reply to a pretty simple request for tshirts, ongoing thread over the past 3 months. Concerned about their organizational capacity.
            • Robb: Yeah, we do get a lot of groups saying they'll do things and then never do them.

YES / Youth Entertainment Services Member Collective Application

Application from Global Communication Services/YES Program to become a member collective of the Omni Commons

1. Mission statement What do you do?

The mission of Global Communication Services (GCS) is to provide community service for individuals, families, and community groups toward health consulting, health benefits, cultural exchange and immigrate support here in United States and international. The mission of Youth Empowerment Services (YES) is to advance and support children, youth, and family on academic breakthroughs in life development, job placement and other activities focusing and envisioning a community where all young people have the opportunities and access to programs without restriction of race, cultural difference or socioeconomic status.

What happens in the world because you exist?

Our program serves the community by tutoring/mentoring and providing educational workshops. We also teach cultural art history, and different languages through workshops and events. Our services encompass problem solving approaches based on education and tapping into the cultural strengths and living experiences of African immigrants and Black African American youth and families. We help to uncover the individuals hidden talents and strengths which leads to healthy self esteem, individual and group self-reliance. Our program is open to all ethnic groups who choose to excel and claim their genius!

2. Origin and group history How did you start?

Originally, Global Communication Services (GCS) was established in 2012 as my (Almaz’s) consulting business to provide community service for individuals, families, and community groups toward health consulting, health benefits, immigrate support. Which included language interpreting and translating services. I had people working with me doing the same thing. As a part of GCS we taught cultural literacy for African immigrant youth, like cultural dance, language; as well as sports and hiking and camping trip to Yosemite National Park. After a long time personal experience working with immigrant families and being one of the reader for 13 afterschool programs at the City of Oakland in 2013. I seen the main problem children face especially around the low-income families and how new immigrant dealt within the public school system. At the end of 2014 decided to incorporate a few staff members to GCS and enhance the youth program, YES, which will focus on youth academic and life development support.

How does your group make decisions?

Our group makes decision collectively by majority vote if necessary to do so. So fare we don’t have any conflicts or misunderstanding, each staff member contributes to the program cooperatively.

What have you done?

We have helped several youth with their academic work, job placement, health and wellness training. We host community based cultural events and workshops. We are a pioneer collective group with different cultural and educational backgrounds. We work collectively with community groups locally, nationally and internationally. Our staff meets at least once per month.

3. Participation in the Omni Why are you interested in becoming a member? How does your group intend to use the space? What are your needs?

Our mission and the objectives of the Omni are aligned. We both are working diligently to improve and empower individuals and the community. We also enjoy the location of the Omni. Hosting events at the Omni would be of great value to our team. Becoming a part of the ownership team is also a very exciting opportunity for our organization. We would like to be fiscally sponsored by the Omni.

How does your group intend to use the space?

We intend to use the space for workshops, classroom trainings, events, rehearsals, and collective member meetings.

What are your needs?

Our need is to have space at the Omni as a member collective. We will use the space to have locked storage, books, and a table for small class meetings. We will also have larger events like fundraisers, health trainings, or music and cultural programs that we would like to hold in the larger common spaces.

4. Group finances and paying rent? What does your group do to support itself financially? What is your best plan for contributing your potential share of rent to the Omni? Please include relevant financial statements, documentation of sufficient income (e.g. balance sheet, bank statement profit & loss statement).

We have about $500 from the community fundraiser events and we are planning to charge sliding scale admission for workshops, classroom trainings, and other large music events. We have been invited to apply for several government and private grants. Our anticipated largest funding source for our youth project will be coming from grants and monthly member donations.

We propose to pay $100 a month in rent plus utilities for the first three-months until we receive grants to support our program. After the first three months we will pay $200 for rent plus utilities and would like to become the stewards of the blue classroom and have priority use of that space. We do not plan to charge youth or low-income families for our services however, we do accept donations.

We do not currently have a bank account. As a fiscally sponsored project we would open a sub account under the Omni’s bank account.

5. Dedicated space If your group would like some dedicated space at the Omni, what square footage and what features are you looking for? Which specific rooms do you feel might be suitable?

We are proposing to steward and maintain the Blue classroom and keep a locked storage cabinet there after our first three months of membership. We would have priority for our youth classes and family consulting, and would make the space available to other groups when we were not using it.

6. Other contributions to the Omni

This question should inspire some imagination. We are exploring ideas to pay rent and purchase the building in the long-term. The basic plan is for each group paying a share of rent. Potential plans include groups sharing profit from their activities, producing Omni events, and booking other events. What is the best-case scenario for using the Omni space to further support your group?
One of the ways that we may be able to generate funds is by hosting monthly events. At first this income may be slow yet if we continue we will look to attract sponsors and also grow our attendance of our events.
We also plan to produce mutually beneficial community programs for the Omni that would entail youth related film screenings, concerts & workshops…
We can help the Omni by participating on the working groups. Almaz has been volunteering with the Commons working group for about 2 months.
We hope that this project will greatly expand the scope of the Omni’s community and increase its visibility. There is a chance that funders and donors introduced to the Omni through our Program would financially support the project of the Omni. We plan to bring more African and African American community members and others who would increase the diversity of the Omni’s community in many ways, including inviting programming for and by community groups who represent our neighborhood and community.
Wanda Sabir of KPFA and Sophie of KPOO are also media supporters of YES. We can mention the Omni on our radio broadcast and other media collaborations.

7. Additional information? Is there any other information that you think would be useful for us to know about your group?

Our collective will have diverse group members, artists, business owners, educators, musicians, authors, which all those who organize and those who participate are all considered collective members. Will also have volunteers temporary member participates from deferent community groups, which include college/university students and community educators. All participates in our program would not necessarily be considered members unless they show constant involvement at YES program.

Membership Issues

  • All I can say, is that I don't have any intention to do things like I did before. I don't want to hang out here, I just want to get things done. If I was supposed to learn a lesson, yes I believe I did. I don't make promises, but I can do the best I can. I don't want to be here in late nights, I don't want to be here as much as I was before. I'd like to be involved, doing sewing is actually something that I need to do.
  • Previous meeting notes: https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Meeting_Notes_2014-11-05
  • Agreements:
    • Keeping things tidy
    • No storing personal possessions
    • No sleeping / domestically inhabiting the space
    • Keep common space common.
  • And then ChrisB almost pitched a tent (he doesn't have enough poles--he has two poles for another tent)

Cleaning / Accessibility

  • Robb: When I was in a wheelchair, I was able to get around no problem, just had to push chairs out of the way
  • Dante: Need to put tape along more walkways
  • ffaust: is it expensive to have some entrances have buttons that open the doors? (speaking as an at present mobility challenged sudoer)
  • ChrisB: There are things in the space that haven't been hacked in over three years
    • Matt: We should put them all on the table with signs
  • Matt: Could invite all the hackers from other hackerspace to come to a giant free pile
    • Chris: As long as they *come* with empty hands
  • Robb: WOuld like to see us organize the space first - we threw out a bunch of good shit last time
  • Discussion about building a proper Donations and an Ewaste bin
  • Discussion about building up - building a catwalk, freestanding tall storage, pallets on pulleys (we have a pallet jack)
