the NYC bath house costs $35 to get in, the one here is $30. Russians love
fancy shit, and building and running a bathhouse is expensive. There is no
russian analogue to our American fetishization of financial insecurity.
When I went to Moscow I was surprised to see that 5'8" looked like the
median height for a man my age there. Then someone pointed out that we were
teens in the 90s, when almost 50% of Russians were living under their
poverty line. I was seeing the long term result of a generation starving
during their growing years.
