[sudo-discuss] a very racist encounter from a man named Rob

Both Scott and Robb's descriptions of this interaction point to some deep
cultural and structural issues at Omni.

I am hopeful that we can work towards engendering a culture of generosity
and hospitality rather than one of resentment and distrust and that we can
begin to really address internalized / structural racism within ourselves
as well as organizationally.

Deon: I am so sorry that you had this experience. It's categorically not ok
that you encountered such hostility at Omni.

Rob: I'm glad that you're not answering the door anymore. It sounds like
welcoming folks into Omni is something that you resent and I don't think
you should do it anymore. When people accuse Omni of having a White
Supremacist culture this is exactly the kind of thing they are talking
about. If you're not clear as to what about this interaction could be
interpreted as White Supremacist, I'd encourage you to do some personal
anti-oppression work.

Here's a pretty good list of resources:

https://organizingforpower.org/anti-oppression-resources-exercises/

I'm hoping to put a formal proposal together that would require Omni
organizers to engage in some kind of anti-oppression training but I move at
a snail's pace these days so it will probably take me some time to prepare.

With love and in solidarity,

Niki
