Googling around a bit more - seems like all the professionals recommend using a razor blade scraper with a fresh blade, and always keep the surface *wet* with window cleaner or a soap solution. Apparently keeping the surface wet makes the scraping much easier and prevents scratching the glass with the razor blade.
