I’ve sort of avoided getting involved with Omni finances because I think it’s possibly where I have the least knowledge, comfort, or interest. But I’m going to give myself the advice I’d give others: this work needs hands. Sudo and Omni are rare gems. They aren’t going to be around next year unless more people get actively involved in arranging and managing our finances.

It’s not fun to talk about, but you know what is less fun? Losing this place. If we lost this building, we all need to ask how that would make us feel, and if we’d regret having not done more when it would’ve made a difference. This isn’t hopeless. What we do now determines what happens.

I’m going to send a message to Yar asking for instructions on how best to get involved. I’m going to ask the finance channel on slack when their next meeting is. I’ll share the process as I go through it, and I hope others will join me in this.

yes this is great news for Sudo

But Omni Commons in general is not doing so well. As you may have noticed if
you read the delegates meeting notes, we are due for a tax payment by the end
of this month, of $60,400.  And we don't really have that much, although we
are going to be able to get the check to clear by creative shuffling of
various accounts.

if we don't pay the PG&e bill, we don't lose the building. if we don't pay the
water bill, even if the water gets turned off we don't lose the building. But
if we don't pay the tax bill, we can lose the building. so we are prioritizing
that.

sudoroom pays omni Commons $2,000 each month in rent. we are on time with
that, but Omni Commons in general needs more money. The GoFundMe is still
active, and is a great way to contribute extra money that's burning a hole in
your pocket.

We also need volunteers to join the finance team specifically to help find a
new lender for the building, since the mortgage we have right now is balooning
in December.  We are also always looking for people to find and apply for
grants to keep the whole operation going.  Shit we struggle to have enough
people on the finance team to collect rent from all the tenants/collectives.
