The chromebooks are not so easy to give out because they are all cloud locked.
The organization that owned them previously could deprovision them via a web control panel or, I believe,
script it using the api (if they had like a csv of the serial numbers.)
Anyways, the chromebooks have been here a while and not deprovisioned yet.
A workaround is to manually reflash the firmware (bios) and install Linux the usual way. This is
connecting an spi flash programmer to the flash chip. Access requires completely removing the motherboard.
So I feel the giveaway should focus on the Latitudes which are more straightforward.
As for the chromebooks: I thought I'd try making a print and video guide for reflashing. So in the future if
someone wants a machine they could go follow the guide to make one themselves.
And probably refuse any dump of locked machines in the future. Or at least until the current stock is depleted.

I like to work iteratively - I think a smaller event (I was proposing August 26th; perhaps in the afternoon around 3pm?) with just the latitudes would be a good way to identify what works and doesn't work with the meet-up itself, while we work to resolve the issues with the chromebooks.
I'm sure someone can do better what what I've got here for a weekly flyer, but perhaps this can get us started?

Yea I like the art idea but was just trying to update that most laptops we have are not yet ready to give out to people who are not already hacker types.
Though that second flyer about "calling in hackers"... that event could be really great to get us closer to that point. What we really need right now are people figuring out the technical kinks. We could run that asap and I think thatd be great.
We have one WNB coding flyer that Romy made and is dope, but an ongoing discussion is talking about rebranding to welcome ppl interested in electronics and digital fab, not just coding. So we could make a new flyer for that. But we gotta figure out an event name first or if we want to change it actually.
One thing I would love is a general sudo room flyer with all events, that is printable. I could post some around town/in other makerspaces.

My goal for the initial post is the see who has knowledge and interest through data collecting then having a collective meeting about what the process would look like.
Jake prose the importance of needing to remove the corporate labels before any rebooting. Then Johnathon suggested a mix media version of this which could be a cute meet and greet of how to go about the laptops! Without fully sending them all out until a concrete plan and structure for tracking the efforts is in play.
But I hear you said removing the logos were pretty easy.
My general call out would just to bring in more voices and ideas but definitely down to wait since you guys are on to something!
I’m generally just trying to boost Sudo room more, so whatever ideas events workshops lmk happy to support with outreach/marketing!
Also quickly made this for tuesday hardware nights, should I make one for non binary Mondays too?
IMO we should wait till we get the flashing procedure down for the chromebooks and figure out some good distributions (and configurations) to recommend.
3 and I were working last night on this, and I had a lot of problems with the bios flashing (could connect and read, but was only able to successfully erase and write once out of maybe 50 tries). 3 was trying to figure out audio drivers for antiX but no luck either. I think that would be overwhelming to throw non-sudoers in to work on. Unless we are just telling people to use the latitudes. Or unless someone has this all figured out and willing to help host this night

Hey y’all Johnathon brought up a laptop decorating party post rebranding it. Then they need a bit of hacking to they are ready for deployment , how do folks feel about me sharing this flyer Johnathon and I made?
