Sudo Room Meeting - Wednesday July 16 2025 8pm-10pm
Meeting Details
Roles
- Facilitator/s: Page
- Stacktaker: Jake
- Timekeeper: Everyone
- Notetaker/s: Jake, LF
Attendees
- paige
- jake
- cassady
- ianon
- Lo
- carl
- felipe
- Michael
Agenda
- Sudoroom support for the Apartheid-Free campaign pledge
- Weekly finance report back labor
apartheid free comunities pledge
- Lo speaks about proposal
- paige: we need to be able to make a decision about things
- michael: for Lo's proposal, one thing is what someone thinks, and the second is what sudoroom thinks of it, and we should have a procedure to determine that
- jake: i propose secure polling system
- paige: we used to vote in the meetings but we could hybridize by posting agenda before meeting
- Lo: i think it's important to raise awareness of the issue of membership and not enough people showing up to meetings, but we're talking about it in the meeting of people who are here, but the people who aren't here need to hear it
- paige: that's why i think we should post agenda beforehand, but emails are not working
- jake: should we use discord?
- paige: yes i'm fine with email but other people aren't
- michael: we should stick with free software, like element/matrix
...
- paige: i don't know who's a member though
- Lo: i like the proposal of putting an agenda out where there's
- people are asked whether they're members and whether they think we should vote for this...
- people would
- cassady: i think we should push it off...
- felipe: i think this discussion has been going on for a while online and offline and i think we should vote...i'm up for voting
- Jake: it is important to register what is being discussed in the space, because sometimes things are not registered in the notes. If you could help out taking notes or if you remember something that needs to be registered. You can add later to the Wiki. This is all going into the wiki.
- Jake: I am not think people are recording the audio.
- Page: I don't love... I am always a little concerned about Jitsi [for privacy reasons].
- Jake: We can run our own Jitsi, because we have a server for it.
- Lo: Can decide if we are going to take the vote?
- Jake: We will take a vote and record what people say. We can share the notes of what we discussed and then ask people if they support or not the motion. Putting YES or NO to the motion.
- Michael: Should we do anonymously?
- Paige: We can just record the number of votes and not the names of who voted how
- someone asks whether this is too political for sudoroom which is a hackerspace
- jake: talks a lot about why it's important for sudoroom to take a stand
- michael: talks about code of conduct and i can sense that what this is about is related. My concern about apartheid is that it could fall into stuff like political correctness, maybe it would be difficult to define what is and is not apartheid...
jake: this is not about determining where there is and is not apartheid, this is about use taking a stand about apartheid itself Lo: i'm proposing that we as a community say "apartheid is not a thing that we support". Our logo would not be going onto the website, our name would. ... We don't have to change our code of conduct as sudoroom to sign off. Also I have to leave soon but my vote for this is obviously a yes.
- jake: can we take a vote now?
- paige: I like michael's response, the biggest thing from this would be being listed on that website. It would be nice if we could say we'd like to support this because it's part of our code of conduct or something but our wiki says our code of conduct is just whatever omni's COC is but omni isn't a thing anymore...
- paige: we have 7 out of 7
- Lo: yay thank y'all! I can sign the pledge for us or....
weekly finance report back labor
- paige: i've been sending the rent, which is a process involving the bank account and i want someone to take over doing
- Jake: I volunteer to help with that process. I just need to log-in the service, but I will do that. Anything else you want help with?
- Page: I was hoping someone could help checking out how income we made in comparison with what we pay in rent. We want to do that every meeting. We need a bookkeeper. We have someone to help as a bookkeeper, but we need to pay her.
- Jake: currently stripe is not working, we have someone now, but it is not active. we need someone who is active in Sudo. Stripe is how we get the payments and paypal. It is annoying, because you have to do 2FA to get into the system, but it is annoying. We have someone, but sometimes they are busy. It is hard to get in sometimes. We need to 2FA over and over again.
- Page: the rent is due on the 25th, you should be able to pay it using the account we have with the members' payments. CALLI sends us an invoice
- random discussion about stuff
- Jake: we just got a new membership application!
- Carl: did anyone look into the bank account to see how we are doing more recently?
- Paige: I did a search a couple of meetings ago, I did a lot of how much we make and how much we pay in rent for the past 6 months. We are short 500 dollars. We are drawing from the savings slowly.
- Jake: we need more members.
- An: More revenue streams
- Paige: we are currently drawing on omni to pay for the insurance. We need someone to do this accounting. I am in the omni nonprofit board. I am the one doing stuff for Sudoroom. Rent is the hugest expense, but we also need to pay a bookkeeper. We were paying a huge insurance. I cancelled the plan, we have a much cheaper now.
- jake: sudoroom checking account has 1716.40 plus some in paypal
- Carl: When is Sudoroom's birthday? So we can have a fundraising party! We can have a ball, fun ideas... we got a lot of chromebooks... people can donate money for getting chromebooks, something like that
- An: Sudo's Birthday is September 20 (2012) Let's have a party!!
