Attendees

Paige, Andy, Jonathan, Sierk, and 2 visitors new to sudo room

Agenda

facilities

Discussion about the old donated computers and what we can do with them. Paige’s idea is we can store under the staircase whenever table space is needed. Idea to put one on the entry table across from the ewaste pile, put games on it or something

  • Andy: talked about how at Open sauce they had some old computer for sending tweets and was cool
  • Andy: Though this donation is neat, we need policy for donations.
  • Paige: Should schedule a day to go through stuff

Plan to schedule this late August. First meeting will just be to identify what to we want to sell, throw out. Post this online or mark somehow for others who didnt attend to chime in. Will then have a follow up meeting where we actually move stuff.

  • Jonathan: this is how I imagine sorting stuff:
  1. stuff we think we could sell
  2. stuff that is definitely garbage
  3. ewaste stuff that could be upcycled for art purposes. media lab is making clothing… do they ever do jewelry? Would they want some stuff
  • vistor – event idea of making jewelry out of ewaste would be fun

meeting low attendance

  • Paige: though people are not coming in person, seems like a bigger audience in emails/reading notes
  • Sierk: Should send out online message before meetings that require big decision making. People who don’t usually come to these meetings may join in person or virtually when making a bigger decision. I.e. decisions that regard omni commons as a whole, that we need delegate to bring up

Events

Discussion about laptop decorating event that Jonathan proposed

  • Paige: Normally I wouldn’t care about someone throwing event without approval, just have sent response emails based off flyer – worried that we would be painting all the laptops. Rather than leaving them as is for future owners to personalize (or not personalize).
  • Jonathan: Event idea is to personalize their own laptop, not all of the ones we have in stock. If someone doesn’t have a laptop, then they could personalize one of ours and take home. Try to ease new people into the hackerspace. Goal to first introduce people who already come to omni commons. Lots of artsy people around here and already likely to share values. Then reach out to broader community who has interest in tech/electronics. Idea: boys and girls club in oakland and emeryville.
  • Paige: Thinks plan is sound. Now that we have the chromebook programmers, we can also have people at the event flash bios chips if that seems fun. Tom is working on making a wiki page with instructions. Also down to attend to help with laser cutter for stickers and skins

Goal is to run last week of August or beginning of September. Scheduling around burning man. Iterative approach – initially market people to people at Omni. See how it goes, can always run an event like this again

Talked about fluid mechanics event idea that Romy had. Jonathan talked about hyrdo-dipping

Also talked about recent changes to the omni entry room. This is happening with the omni building working group, meeting Saturdays right now, happy to get more volunteers

Membership survey

Andy presented results from the survey. Nothing that was surprising. 1/3 of 9 respondents like state of space as is. Others want it cleaner/more functional/closer to where they live

Meeting ended with giving 2 new visitors a tour of the space
