We need to find a name that clearly resonates with people. Add your name ideas!
Shortlist
We've talked about having one name for the network and one name for the organization, such that anyone can join the network without being part of the organization.
Naming combinations
We've been yelling out "mesh the planet" for a while and today it was suggested that it could be a name for the mesh network or group. We have already bought meshthepla.net meshtheplanet.net meshtheplanet.org and meshtheplanet.com
Here are some of the naming combinations that have been discussed by the core group recently:
- SSID: peopleswifi.org
- Group: meshtheplanet.org
.
- SSID: peopleswifi.org
- Group: <A non-descriptive name. E.g. mycelium>
.
- SSID: peopleswifi.org
- Group: meshtheplanet.org
.
- SSID: meshtheplanet.net
- Group: peopleswifi.org
.
- SSID: peopleswifi.net
- Group: ?
- Campaign: meshtheplanet.net
- The campaign would not be an organization but a rallying banner and a website that lists all the world's mesh groups.
.
- SSID: meshtheplanet.net
- Group: Freedom Uptime
.
- SSID: meshtheplanet.net
- Group: Aerial Underground
.
- SSID: stealthiswifi.net
- Group: meshtheplanet.org
.
- SSID: rooftophop.net
- Group: meshtheplanet.org
Group-favourite names and possible problems
- peopleswifi.org
- It really should be .net, but .net is taken.
- Wifi-specific, which could make it less suitable as the name for the network in general, but fine for the SSID.
- A bit boring/generic-sounding?
- meshtheplanet.net
- Is the ending of net.net a bit awkward?
- Most people don't know what a mesh is.
- wirelesscommons.net
- A bit long.
- A bit boring.
- How many people (taking into account a very wide audience) know what the word commons means?
- People's Wireless Network (PWN)
- It's long. No pwn.something domains are available. peopleswirelessnetwork.net is available but long.
- 510pen
- Tied to geographical location.
- Confusing when spoken.
- In a previous poll most people were against keeping the 510pen name.
- citizenwifi.net
- Are we excluding non-citizens?
- Wifi-specific.
- stealthiswifi.net
- Obscure reference (depending on audience).
- Wifi-specific.
