To fix it, we took off the front storage for thread (lift and roll to the right), then took off the bottom. Once the bottom was exposed, the holder of the bobbin was anchored with three screws to the shaft. By loosening these, the bobbin cage can rotate independently of the shaft. To align the timing, we put the needle at the lowest point and the claw of the bobbin cage just about to catch it. Once aligned, the three screws must be tightened while keeping the axle tight to maintain good gear contact. A trick to keep this easy was to only turn by hand in the "forward" direction (counter clockwise looking down on the dial). This keep the teeth of the gears in nice contact. Then the bobbin cage was held in a known place while the needle was rotated down its lowest. Finally, the three screws were tightened.
