Hi (sorry dont have a name for you) Understood - and challenge of course is that its hard to get involved if there is noone there to help onboard. There is interest in disaster resilient comms here in Australia and I'm involved with some of the resilience work (in a non-technical capacity), I've also worked with ESP8266's before and I believe the ESP32 is similar. Disaster.radio looks like a more appropriate solution for disaster setups than meshtastic, the typical use case I'm interested in, is as an alternative to the net when the net goes down, so connecting an existing device via to a wifi access point makes more sense than assuming everyone has a mesh device and connects to it on Bluetooth (which I think is the meshtastic architecture). I also like the idea of a web-app because the maintenance becomes something many people can contribute to, and it should work with any device. Can you clarify what the current state is - i.e. if I got the boards, built a pair of units, and flashed it - then would the chat and map apps talk over it. If I can get to that step I can probably demonstrate it to some other technical people and get people enthused to collaborate, if I can't get it to that step its going to be much harder and rely on me having a decent chunk of time to contribute before getting anyone involved. Code Yes, I meant the one on the video. 3D printing is a totally fine way of doing an enclosure in low volumes, but is a massive difference in both reality and "cost" between buying something on Alibaba or just via paypal from someone who has built them before, and something only available as a CAD/3D printer file. I've gone through the process of finding a 3D printing shop, and getting something made, with a less than 50% success rate, and a one-off is always more expensive as even a good shop has to allow for the likely cost of getting it wrong the first time. One of the advantages disaster.radio potentially has over some of the other solutions its the potential for geek-free setup and install. I can figure it out, but most of the villages around here - who could use a setup like disaster radio - don't have a resident geek, and trying to find a 3D printer to print a one-off certainly puts it in the needs-a-geek bucket. The enclosure Sam suggests sounds a better candidate, though it needs the panel mounted separately. Sam I'll try that enclosure you suggest - its a good price. But I'm wondering, have you tried using one of them with the other parts in that part list? For what it’s worth Mitra, in my day job I develop products - often from plastic. I design injection moulded parts, have a full CNC machine shop at home including 3d printing, and relationships with factories in China and Australia. An enclosure like this is about a $10k tool, and no more than $0.40 per set (front and back clamshell) with an MOQ of 2000pcs or so. If there was a final footprint / PCBA, making an enclosure wouldn’t be a particularly expensive or complex endeavour. That assumes someone is going to mass produce these however. I don't see battery power as the issue for the nodes, LoRa is low power - so I'm betting a small solar panel or a larger Lithium battery is going to be fine.

There are quite a range of other plugins now for Meshtastic. Re: GregT 1) The LORA Mesh data rates are verry low, and yes, most systems do have a way to gateway into a 'Net messaging service. 2) A 911 gateway is above my pay grade, but convincing ppl that they don't need a huge PV and home battery just to keep a FTTH terminal alive hasn't been easy. Much overkill. When installed in AUS by the telco, they still(!) put in a gel-cell, which is compost by the time it's needed... Keeping the telco exchange and tower gear running in an outage is the hard part of the problem, but that's another story. 3) Regarding device geo-anonymity - I like to see my (T-Beam) repeaters on the map, but understand that for some deployments, that's not desirable. I've got one of the new-ish RAK Wireless WisBlock devices doing repeater service without a GPS. Not really in response to your message but in general: When I talked about scalability, I didn't mean the ability to procure and set up N nodes. I meant: once you have N nodes, does the protocol work, or does control traffic overwhelm capacity, and do loss rates and hop counts lead to messages not getting through. Going from 3 to 10 to 30 to 100 is usually a big deal in ad hoc radio systems. We haven't talked about mobility. Generally, if nodes are known not to move routing is easier because your update rates can be lower, because you can believe your topology information for a longer period of time.

I've gone through the process of finding a 3D printing shop, and getting something made, with a less than 50% success rate, and a one-off is always more expensive as even a good shop has to allow for the likely cost of getting it wrong the first time. One of the advantages disaster.radio potentially has over some of the other solutions its the potential for geek-free setup and install. I can figure it out, but most of the villages around here - who could use a setup like disaster radio - don't have a resident geek, and trying to find a 3D printer to print a one-off certainly puts it in the needs-a-geek bucket. The enclosure Sam suggests sounds a better candidate, though it needs the panel mounted separately. Sam I'll try that enclosure you suggest - its a good price. But I'm wondering, have you tried using one of them with the other parts in that part list?
