peoplesopen.net is now available in sudo room, meaning that the
peoplesopen.net wifi in sudo room is connected to the rest of the mesh.
Daniel and myself took advantage of this to remote-reconfigure his home
node to change which ethernet ports are used for which network.
Started documenting the Omni wifi network as we finish configuring the last
routers:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Mesh/OmniWifi
Will came by and we crimped an outdoor ethernet cable for his extender node
that he is mounting …
[View More]at his new location close to Omni.
Realized that we don't have anymore shielded EZ-RJ45 plugs for CAT6 and
trying to fit the thicker copper through CAT5 plugs is a pain. Ordered CAT6
version.
Talked about renaming the peoplesopen.net ssid for 5 GHz to
peoplesopen.net-5ghz since some operating systems seem to prefer 2.4 and
e.g. network-manager's UI seems to not have any way to connect to the 5 Ghz
peoplesopen.net at all! Getting more clients on 5 GHz might be good or bad.
Made the switch for Omni at least since those routers are all hard-wired.
Talked about setting up a GSM network at Omni using the new donated SDR
gear.

Help needed to represent the mesh network at the Omni fair on Friday!
There's a fair at the omni on Friday from 10am to 5pm.
https://omnicommons.org/calendar/events/the-omni-commons-fair/https://www.facebook.com/events/1019941721421475/
I'm going to set up a table at around 8am but I need to head to work so I
won't be back until 4pm or so.
On the table I'm going to put:
An explanation of the mesh network and some details on why it's great.
A Western Digital N600 router with a sign that says "…
[View More]This is a mesh node!"
A sign-up sheet for people who want to host a node at their home.
If you are free on Friday from 10-5PM and can talk about the mesh network
please let me know!

*We’ve been changing the exterior of the Omni to increase security,
accessibility, and improve the buildings appearance. *You may have seen our
beautiful new front door that improves wheelchair accessibility. Exterior
lighting has been repaired and we will add more as finances permit. After
long discussions about privacy and security concerns, we have developed a
security camera system that ensures footage can only be used when necessary
for increasing the safety of our community. You will soon see security
cameras mounted to observe key areas of the exterior and sidewalk. The
cypress trees have been pruned back, but there is discussion about problems
with them, such as providing hiding places for both people and objects, and
the mess they leave on the sidewalk.

ultimately converted into Real Vegan Cheese through standard cheese-making
processes – just like cheese made from cow or goat milk!

Both of them went home with freshly configured home nodes, and one of them

I was totally one of those people who showed up once and never again ...
yet. I added a couple potential nodes to that mapping application. One of
those also has a Lake Merrit view (from a hill on the lakeshore side). I
also have a few routers on hand that I bought from that woot deal. I've
been meaning to go to a meeting ... now I know when to go, so thanks!

At tonight's meet/hacknight we'll be making prototypes of emergency power
cables so people can power their mesh nodes in a disaster situation.
The idea is to make cheap, long, foolproof cables + instructions that make
it simple to power mesh nodes from any 12 vdc source.
The thinking behind this is that the U.S. is full of cars and the most
medium-term power supply in the days/weeks after a disaster will be car
batteries.
A while back we ordered components for this from china and now that …
[View More]they've
arrived we can make some cables and test how they work and whether we need
better under-voltage/over-voltage protection.
See you at 7:30 pm!
