Hey,
I want to plan a Sudo Mesh event. I'd like to get folks together, review
all the existing materials and spitball ideas for what we'd like to do with
Sudo Mesh.
I want to be upfront: I know Sudo Mesh was developed by a lot of smart
people through a lot of hard work, and I don't want to deny them their due
or agency over this project. So if someone -- anyone -- who has worked on
this before I showed up wants to guide the next steps, I would love that.
To start with, I'm wondering how many …
[View More]people are seeing this message? If
you see this and are interested in getting involved or getting reinvolved,
please speak up.

Andrew,
I apologize if you haven't gotten the response that you desire, there are
so many communication channels available to us, that it's likely many don't
want to respond to your request via the email list. Regardless, despite
your claims SudoMesh is not an inactive project. As a distributed project,
Marc probably just doesn't feel like he should be making unanimous
decisions for the rest of the community.
I doubt you hurt Marc's feelings, but more failed to understand his
response: …
[View More]meeting are normally Tuesday nights at Omni Commons (where
Sudoroom is located). If you come to Sudoroom's Hardware Hack night, most
of the Sudomesh folks will be there talking about Disaster Radio, a node
mount for the Sudomesh network, or our contributions to DWeb camp's Mesh
network that is coming up soon.
If you're looking for a Newbie night, this is still probably your best
bet. As most folks don't have the bandwidth to commit to another night.
If Tuesday night doesn't work for you, and you know of a lot of other folks
that are new to ad-hoc mesh networks that would be interested feel free to
suggest something, I'm sure that it can be worked out, but again, attention
is a limited resource in most folk's lives.
Cheers,
Scott

#374 — 18 May 2023
This week we want to highlight the launch of our new series on how some
APC members see the future of circular economies of digital devices
playing out. We also have a powerful account of how activists in Korea
just won an epic nine-year-long privacy case against Google, as well as
the launch of five manuals to support community networks on key issues
such as solar energy and circular economies. And we have a new
research subgrant call for proposals, as well as two job postings!

“The bottom line is to understand that linearity and growth will not go
together”: Introducing "Our Circular Future", a series on the future of
circular economies
<https://crm.apc.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=16997&qid=1882416>
In this new series, we reconnect with members who contributed to
our guide on the circular economy of digital devices, this time
about their vision for the future of these economies. In part one, we
speak with CITAD about what is needed in the right to repair
movement, emerging trends and lessons learned and missed.
ADVOCATING FOR HUMAN RIGHTS ONLINE
Protecting civil rights against corporate surveillance in South Korea
<https://crm.apc.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=16998&qid=1882416>
Google has been giving access to users' personal information to the US
government under the latter's PRISM programme. In 2014, six activists
from various organisations, including APC member Korean Progressive
Network Jinbonet, took the tech giant to court, demanding they be given
access to the information that Google holds on them. Nine years
later, they finally won in the Supreme Court.
The APC network intervenes at the Global Digital Compact's deep dive
session on human rights online
<https://crm.apc.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=16999&qid=1882416>
APC and its members gave statements at the Global Digital Compact (GDC)
thematic deep dive session on the theme of human rights online.
SPOTLIGHT ON ASIA
Call for proposals: APC is excited to announce the CYRILLA research
subgrant for 2023!
<https://crm.apc.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=17000&qid=1882416>
APC will award one subgrant for a research project that focuses on the
criminalisation of online expression in Sri Lanka, in continuation of
research which to date has covered nine countries across South and
Southeast Asia. The deadline to apply is 15 June.
*From the archives* Unshackling expression: A study on laws
criminalising expression online in Asia
<https://crm.apc.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=17017&qid=1882416>
This special GISWatch edition examines problematic trends in the use of
laws against freedom of expression in online spaces in Asia. It presents
analysis on the criminalisation of online expression in six countries:
Cambodia, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan and Thailand.
LOCAL ACCESS AND COMMUNITY NETWORKS
Manuals from communities of practice: A series to support community
networks <https://crm.apc.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=17001&qid=1882416>
These five manuals are the result of communities of practice
that brought together community network practitioners from diverse
countries. They aim to support community networks on key issues such as
solar energy, circular economies, bamboo infrastructure and more.
Rural digital transformation in Sekgosese: Overcoming connectivity
challenges and developing digital skills
<https://crm.apc.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=17002&qid=1882416>
Drawing on the lessons and experiences from the Mamaila Community
Network, traditional leaders, local entrepreneurs, community members and
academics discussed the role of community networks as complementary
solutions to commercial internet service providers in bridging the
digital divide in underserved areas such as Sekgosese, in South Africa.
El afecto, un pilar fundamental en la construcción de redes comunitarias
en Latinomérica
<https://crm.apc.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=17003&qid=1882416>

Hi there,
It's been a while since I've chimed in here. For those who don't know me, I
used to be involved in Sudo Mesh/People's Open between 2017-2020 until the
pandemic kind of slowed everything down.
I'm writing because I'm one of the core organizers of DWeb Camp, an event
organized by the Internet Archive about building a better, more
decentralized web. This year it's happening for the third time this June
21-25, 2023 in Mendocino at Camp Navarro: https://dwebcamp.org/
We've always had a …
[View More]local mesh network component to the event, but this
time, we're doing something different. We're shutting off the Internet on
the third and final full day of camp on Saturday. We're calling that day
Tomorrow, and we're going to use the opportunity to test out locally hosted
p2p apps and spend the day doing emergent sessions. We're also planning a
whole LARP-y narrative around *why* the Internet is going to be shut off.
More info here: https://dwebcamp.org/tomorrow/
I'm telling you all this because I have two asks of Sudo Mesh folks:
1 - Local Network Build Volunteers -- We're looking for two people who can
help us build the mesh network there at Camp and help us test it and
maintain it through the event. We can offer a free ticket to the event to
these volunteers in exchange (you would need to self-camp). Please note
that we are looking for people who have some networking hardware/software
experience.
If you're interested, please email me at mai(a)archive.org (also cc'd on this
email) with information about yourself and your experience.
2 - Network Equipment -- We do have some network gear, and our main network
stewards (Esther and Cody, cc'd) are coming from Seattle Mesh with some of
theirs too. However, it would be extremely helpful if we could borrow some
things from the mesh cage at Sudo Room -- assuming some of it is still
there...!
Since I've been out of the loop, I'm not sure who to talk to or people who
would make the decision about this kind of thing, so if anyone can point me
in their direction, please do!
Thanks all! Hope to hear from you soon.
Warmly,
Mai
