Hello All
I recently joined this list after learning about the sudomesh project on
reddit. I'm interested in learning more about hosting a node. The wiki
page that describes this (
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Mesh/How_to_help#Host_a_node.21) says to add your
location to the map, but the map link is out of date. Can anyone advise
please the most current procedure for this?
Mark
Hi meshy folks,
I work with Digital Democracy[1], a non-profit doing offline
peer-to-peer mapping for environmental monitoring in parts of South
America.
Dd is looking for someone who is interested in traveling to the
savannahs of southern Guyana and set up long-distance wifi connections
for indigenous communities. They're looking for volunteers for a trip in
February/March. You can find the details here:
https://gist.github.com/gmaclennan/dfba3afd0575b6a9cbbe4200d9b26d82
Dd can …
[View More]potentially pay flights and costs as well.

To: info(a)peoplesopen.net
Hello People’s Open!
Toronto Mesh will be having a talk at the Freifunk Assembly at 34c3. It
will mostly focus on the history of Toronto community networks and what
Toronto Mesh has been doing. We thought it'd be nice to mention some of the
North American …
[View More]community meshnets to this predominantly European audience.
So please email hello(a)tomesh.net <hello(a)tomesh.net> if there is something
you'd like us to mention. Something brief about your local network,
approach, what works and what doesn't, the tech, interesting projects you
are building, etc. Details about the talk is listed here:

Pretty good! Though the word "mesh" gets repeated so often it stopped
making sense to me. I think we should try to push "community network" more.
We really need a request form on the website. Anyone object to me throwing
one up?

Hey y'all,
if you didn't know, sudomesh recently acquired the domain
buildyourowninter.net (thanks jenny!). We've tossed around a lot of ideas,
most involve making it some sort collaborative resource for, well, building
your own internet, but we have yet to do anything with it. We are looking
for advice, suggestions, input, help, inspiration, pizza. Feel free to
respond to this thread or comment on the github issue,

> Second Batch of Tickets to the Circle of HOPE Go on Sale Tomorrow
Jenny thanks for posting about this -- well meanwhile I can look at video
from previous HOPEs thanks to the Internet Archive (& just made a donation).
Hi All,
So I'm flashing another node just for practice. Things seemed to go fairly
smoothly except when I try to plug my new node into my internet connection
and connect to it I can connect to the private network ("mesh100" in this
case) just fine, but I can't connect to either of the public networks
peoplesopen.net 65.20.193
or
peoplesopen.net fast 65.20.193
Is there a specific place I should look to diagnose this?
I followed the current instructions on the Walkthrough:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Mesh/WalkThrough
best,
Arthur
We should go to HOPE and do a BYOI workshop next summer!
I'd be down to go in on an AirBnB in Manhattan for the duration.

Subject: [hope-announce] Second Batch of Tickets to the Circle of HOPE Go
on Sale Tomorrow
To: hope-announce(a)2600.com
Greetings!
Last month's ticket sale was over in just around one second. You'll
have another chance on Tuesday, December 12th at 12:12 pm Eastern Time.
We suggest reading the link at https://www.hope.net now so you don't
have to when the magic time arrives.
In response to your feedback, we're installing a new feature that will
hopefully eliminate the frustration of having tickets show up in your
shopping cart, only to disappear as you check out. We have no idea how
well it will work, so tomorrow will be a bit of an adventure for us too.
You can also get a super-discounted hotel room for The Circle of HOPE
by visiting https://tinyurl.com/xii-hope-discount-rooms - these should
be available for a while but they will sell out at some point.
Speaker submissions for HOPE will be opening up soon so stay tuned for
announcements on that. We'll also have updates for people interested in
volunteering and participating in other ways.
We look forward to seeing you at the next conference and wish you the
best of luck if you try to get tickets on Tuesday!
The Circle of HOPE Staff
P.S. The last thing we want to do is bug you with emails you don't want.
If you're trying to unsubscribe from this list and haven't succeeded
using the directions below, simply email feedback(a)hope.net from the email
address we have for you and demand to be removed. We will cheerfully comply.

To unsubscribe from this list, send email to majordomo(a)2600.com with
'unsubscribe hope-announce' (no quotes) in the body. Be sure to do this from

*Subject: *CN Fellowships for IGF 2017
Hello Colleagues –
In coordination with ISOC’s 2018 planning and a key focus on community
networks, we are coming to you with a rapid call for CN fellowships. This
CN fellowship for IGF 2017 will support air travel and hotel costs only.
Key data points:
1. Send an email by 11 December at 1700 UTC to coffin(a)isoc.org and
buell(a)isoc.org indicating “why” as a community network manager, operator,
researcher, or enabler you would like a fellowship to the IGF 2017.
2. Criteria:
-You must have worked with, managed, created, researched, or enabled a
community network for more than one year. We consider community radio as
part of CNs.
-You must not have received an ISOC fellowship to the IGF in the past.
3. There will be a strong focus on women working with CNs, CNs in
Indigenous communities, CNs working with refugees, CNs working in disaster
and emergency response situations.
We know time is short, but we have an opportunity to help some folks get to
Geneva for IGF2017 and to introduce you around or have others do the same.
Please forward to folks you know.
Best,
Jane

Hey everybody,
Sudo Mesh, Sudo Room, Omni Commons, et al. now has its own etherpad-lite
<https://github.com/ether/etherpad-lite> instance running on the mesh and
also accessible via "the Internet." Help test it out by going to
https://peoplesopen.net/pad and creating your very own collaborative
SudoPad. We are currently working on documenting the service on our wiki,
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Mesh/SudoPad, and it is still very much in the
testing phase, so use it with caution.
cheers,

On Dec. 14th the FCC [1] (Federal Communication Commission) is preparing
to dismantle net neutrality [2] which prevents the huge internet service
providers' oligopoly from unfairly discriminating against websites it
doesn't like and would help lead to the privatization &
commercialization of the internet.
But the grassroots is fighting back! Folks are organizing protests at
Verizon stores locations around the country. Verizon [3], in particular,
will make bigly profits from the …
[View More]destruction of net neutrality. In the
Oakland-Berkeley area there are 3 Verizon locations, and as of yet,
apparently no one is organizing [4] any actions there. We are going to
be the laughing stock of the national movement.
If you can be a contract for one of these Verizon protests, just go to
verizonprotests.com [5] and enter your contact info [6] for the location
that you pick! (The details are at the web site). The protests are
taking place on (or before) December 7th, so please help out with this
just as soon as you can!
Me, I'm useless, the 7th is my first wife's birthday (she was born on
the 25th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day) and she wants me to take her
to Calistoga to view the smoking ruins. And the way I look, I better
stick with the partner I have.
Thanks for all you do,
Ed & the rump of Occupy Oakland

Wish I could be there, I will be out of town. Actually I'm just north of DC
& would happily attend a rally about this downtown if I knew of one. The
FCC ruling will be issued, I think, on Dec. 15, by which time I'll be back
in Oakland.
Hey y'all -
I've been rummaging around the https://github.com/sudomesh/sudowrt-firm
ware on and off the last couple of weeks.
I found that I (and I assume others) could not reliably build our
sudowrt firmware, and without firmware no peoplesopen, so I got
motivated.
Some observations / updates:
- docker images are now being pushed from travis to docker hub daily or
whenever a change occurs. This images contain a base build image that
you can pull to your own environment.
- I refactored …
[View More]some of the build scripts in an effort to separate the
getting of resources (feeds etc.) from the actual building to reduce
variability
- aside from pushing build images to docker hub, travis also attempt to
create a firmware build, and gets terminated after about 40 min because
of > 4MB of console output.
- the version of openwrt is now fixed to a specific commit hash (see ht
tps://github.com/sudomesh/sudowrt-
firmware/blob/master/openwrt_config/version): previously we were
building off of HEAD, with all excitement associated to it.
- I found out that during make (the actual building of the firmware),
all sorts of dependencies are downloaded. Some of these dependencies
are no longer available for the last openwrt release 15.05.1 (e.g., htt
ps://github.com/sudomesh/sudowrt-firmware/issues/114).
- still working on creating a home node firmware build . . .
Curious to hear your thoughts,
-jorrit
