I did tell rob to fuck off. This was after he tried to bully me (for the
second time in the last year) out of a space in which I am also a member.
I was at sudoroom in the sudomesh shelves looking for a few things which
I paid for out of my own pocket and had never received any compensation
for. I have receipts for the rj45ez crimper, the outdoor shielded cable,
and some rj45s. I'm happy to show them to anyone who asks. Rob came over
and tried to act as sudoroom police, telling me that I …
[View More]couldn't be there
and that I couldn't get my things. I told him that while I wasn't a
member of sudomesh anymore, I was in fact a sudoroom member and that I
was retrieving a few things that were mine. He continued to tell me I
couldn't be there. I became emotional and told him to "fuck off". At
that point he became totally irate and told me that I had to leave,
putting his body in the way of me getting my things.
At that point, short of a physical altercation, there was nothing I
could do, so I walked out of the building. I reached my car and realized
that I only had the crimpers, but I really need the cable for a project
I'm working on this week, so I went back in the front door. Rob was
there and got mad again. I told him that I just wanted the cable that
was mine. He said that I couldn't be in the building, but if I went
outside I could show him the receipt and he would get the cable for him.
I opened my computer to get the receipt and looked through my emails.
Shortly after, he told me that he wasn't in the mood to help me and that
I could arrange with sudomesh to get it some other time. At that point I
left.
I need the cable this coming week. I'm planning on coming back tomorrow
(24 hours temp ban or whatever) to get it. I've already been completely
and totally let down by the "mediation" process at sudoroom. Several
core members of the omni can attest to that and it's something which
I'll discuss with anyone, though I don't need to publicly shame folks.
After I get my things, I suppose Rob and company can decide if they
really want to go forwards with mediation after what happened the last time.
I was actually only planning on borrowing MY THINGS for a few days.

Hey Folks,
Seriously, we have over 100 AT6 punch down keystone jacks donated to
Sudoroom/SudoMesh.
Each one of them runs for $6.99 on Amazon.
If you would like to read the story about how this happened:
This AM Laura and I went down the street from Omni to drop off some
donations to de depot, and on our way back we saw a lady on her way to
donate some stuff too. But, when I read the label of one of the boxes that
read Panduit", my brain went in alert mode! :) So i asked her what was in
that …
[View More]box, she opened it for us and saw all those connectors! She asked me,
as you an artist? I said, not, but I know what these things are, and we can
use them! : ) She gave us the box. And that is how we got them. :)
Have a great weekend everyone!
Daniel

Hi!
Hm, I see great photos/posts on Facebook about progress, but the blog
does not contain any of those photos:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Mesh/Blog
:-(
Let's make progress more open and less inside a walled garden called
Facebook. I think there is nothing wrong with posting on Facebook, if
content is not just on Facebook.

Some of you may have experienced a service interruption earlier today.
This was due to a problem with the exit node which has now been fixed.
Apologies for the downtime.

It's a case-less board with a single 2.4 GHz radio but it really is $5
including tax and shipping and you can buy as many as you want.
They're estimated to ship in November.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/onion/omega2-5-iot-computer-with-wi-fi…
I ordered 10 of them for mesh projects.
It's a bit sad that they don't have the ethernet broken out since that
would make them useful as mesh routers that we could just hand out left and
right. We could make ethernet breakout boards for them …
[View More]ourselves if we feel
like doing some soldering, but given that you can buy an OpenWRT router for
~$12 with two ethernet ports and a case it's not obvious that this is worth
it.
If we're ok with just one ethernet port then we could buy a bunch of $1.75
USB ethernet adapters. Assume $1 for a dollar store plastic case and we
then have usable mesh routers for $8 a pop.
They're probably more useful as interfaces between e.g. LoRa hardware and
sensors and such where you just want it to be small, low power and cheap
but still want to run e.g. a full meshing protocol.

Hi!
Forwarding.
Mitar
-------- Forwarded Message --------
From: Eric Schultz <eschultz(a)prplfoundation.org>
Subject: [Battlemesh] FCC Contacts about Wifi Regulations
To: Battle of the Mesh Mailing List <battlemesh(a)ml.ninux.org>
All,
I wanted to let folks at Battlemesh know that the FCC reached out to prpl
Foundation about their U-NII Security Requirements. While we've discussed
this on some public prpl lists (openwrt(a)lists.prplfoundation.org and
fcc(a)lists.prplfoundation.…
[View More]org), I wanted to also pass it along here.
As background, staff from the FCC contacted us in late June to set up a
meeting about the U-NII requirements. It was very introductory and we
didn't get into details but they did express that they wanted to continue
the dialogue. We've reached out to the FCC to try to setup a meeting
between the FCC and important open source community members, including in
the OpenWrt/LEDE community, but as of yet nothing has been agreed upon.
While the dialogue is still early, the FCC has asked that anyone interested
file comments on their docket with suggestions about ways to address wifi
interference as well as the pros and cons of different approaches. I
believe they are looking to try to finalize rules in the next few months so
I encourage folks to submit their comments as soon as possible.
To submit comments, please visit and https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings and
using Proceeding No: 15-170. I strongly encourage interested parties to
contact the FCC through this mechanism.
Thanks,
Eric

Last night I switched the mesh over to a new exit node. The exit node is
the server that acts as a VPN for all of the traffic coming from people
connected to a peoplesopen.net access point.
This switchover means two things:
1. You won't see any more nasty capthas form google. Craigslist works
again, and so does editing wikipedia \o/
2. You may get a warning from google or other sites that you're logging in
from a new IP (since our new exit node has a new IP)
This new exit node actually has …
[View More]multiple IP addresses which means we're no
longer sharing a single IP for the entire mesh (so feel free to set your
torrent clients to use as many simultaneous connections as you please :p).
It's also hosted at a Tor-exit-node-friendly hosting company (psychz.net)
so we shouldn't get any trouble for running a VPN.
A few people have removed the ability for sudo mesh to remote-update their
mesh nodes and opted to manage their own nodes. If this is you and you
still want to switch to the new exit node then you can log into your node
as root and run the attached script (note that this will reboot your node).
I should note that the old and new exit nodes are interconnected so even if
you aren't using the new exit node yet, you're still on the mesh. I'm not
sure how long the old exit node will stay up though.
If you have any questions, just reply to this email :)
and as always: MESH THE PLANET!

I've been putting this off for a while now, but I think it's important
that I finally come out and say this.
I'm no longer interested in a being a member or in any way involved with
sudomesh. This might surprise some folks, largely because so much of the
dysfunction in this group has been swept under the rug, but I don't want
to continue to participate in the facade of "everything is fine here and
we're building a community mesh network". I don't think it's fair to new
folks or to the …
[View More]community at large.
The ownership and power structures of the organization are choking a
really good idea to death. At first I tried to cope with it, thinking
that it was better than nothing. Later I attempted to take action to
help correct it, but was met with a complete unwillingness. The work is
difficult enough. I no longer feel any need to compound it with the
interpersonal, power dynamics, and bureaucratic difficulties that
sudomesh is burdened with.
As I'm currently the owner and maintainer of the sudomesh exit node, if
people are using a "peoplesopen.net" router and want to continue to do
so, they should speak with someone involved with sudomesh (probably
Juul) to coordinate ongoing functionality. I will continue to maintain
some infrastructure, mostly those nodes that I personally installed. I'm
happy to support folks who I personally met with and helped setup.
I do continue to care deeply about building community owned and operated
internet infrastructure. I'm happy to talk about my future plans with
folks as well as what I think went off the rails here. Obviously there
is a lot of work to be done in this domain and though I'm discouraged by
the situation here, I do think that we can move forwards in positive
directions. Feel free to reach out directly to me if you'd like to be a
part of that.

peoplesopen.net is now available in sudo room, meaning that the
peoplesopen.net wifi in sudo room is connected to the rest of the mesh.
Daniel and myself took advantage of this to remote-reconfigure his home
node to change which ethernet ports are used for which network.
Started documenting the Omni wifi network as we finish configuring the last
routers:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Mesh/OmniWifi
Will came by and we crimped an outdoor ethernet cable for his extender node
that he is mounting …
[View More]at his new location close to Omni.
Realized that we don't have anymore shielded EZ-RJ45 plugs for CAT6 and
trying to fit the thicker copper through CAT5 plugs is a pain. Ordered CAT6
version.
Talked about renaming the peoplesopen.net ssid for 5 GHz to
peoplesopen.net-5ghz since some operating systems seem to prefer 2.4 and
e.g. network-manager's UI seems to not have any way to connect to the 5 Ghz
peoplesopen.net at all! Getting more clients on 5 GHz might be good or bad.
Made the switch for Omni at least since those routers are all hard-wired.
Talked about setting up a GSM network at Omni using the new donated SDR
gear.

Help needed to represent the mesh network at the Omni fair on Friday!
There's a fair at the omni on Friday from 10am to 5pm.
https://omnicommons.org/calendar/events/the-omni-commons-fair/https://www.facebook.com/events/1019941721421475/
I'm going to set up a table at around 8am but I need to head to work so I
won't be back until 4pm or so.
On the table I'm going to put:
An explanation of the mesh network and some details on why it's great.
A Western Digital N600 router with a sign that says "…
[View More]This is a mesh node!"
A sign-up sheet for people who want to host a node at their home.
If you are free on Friday from 10-5PM and can talk about the mesh network
please let me know!
