I was totally one of those people who showed up once and never again ...
yet. I added a couple potential nodes to that mapping application. One of
those also has a Lake Merrit view (from a hill on the lakeshore side). I
also have a few routers on hand that I bought from that woot deal. I've
been meaning to go to a meeting ... now I know when to go, so thanks!

At tonight's meet/hacknight we'll be making prototypes of emergency power
cables so people can power their mesh nodes in a disaster situation.
The idea is to make cheap, long, foolproof cables + instructions that make
it simple to power mesh nodes from any 12 vdc source.
The thinking behind this is that the U.S. is full of cars and the most
medium-term power supply in the days/weeks after a disaster will be car
batteries.
A while back we ordered components for this from china and now that they've
arrived we can make some cables and test how they work and whether we need
better under-voltage/over-voltage protection.
See you at 7:30 pm!

Just a quick update from tonight's meshup.
Daniel and Will were here and two new folk came by who have previous mesh
experience, especially more high end private mesh setups. They said they'd
be back and talked about writing up a guide to openwrt compatible mesh
hardware in the post-new-FCC rules!
We got Will set up with a MyNet N600 and a Picostation 2 and he's going to
come by on Thursday and crimp a cable for his rooftop node. He is now
living even closer to Omni and it looks like he has line of sight between
the apartment complexes!
Will took the opportunity to write down every step of the flashing and
configuring process and will be updating the walkthrough on the wiki!
The SSL cert on secrets.sudomesh.org had expired (it's used for the
makenode database) so I updated that.
We also shared some pizza and used the CCL model of just putting out a hat
for pizza money which ended up recouping all but $1 of the cost :)

If you want to help us get more of those nice cheap mesh routers from woot,
they're currently allowing the purchase of 4 units per customer.
The total cost for 4 units including shipping and tax is about $49.25
If you order to your own address and bring them in then we can paypal you
the money!
First add two of this to your cart:
http://computers.woot.com/offers/wd-mynet-n600-2x2-wireless-n-router-50
Then add two of this to your cart
http://computers.woot.com/offers/wd-mynet-n600-2x2-wireless-n-router-51
Then check out.
These have internal antennas only but they have u.fl plugs inside of the
case if you want to attach better antennas. Other than that they are the
same as the TP-Link N600 routers which go for about $40
Thanks in advance!
and do let me know if you still need money refunded for helping us in this
way previously. Remember to include your paypal email address.

In case it slipped through the radar, please join the conversation and send
an email to the FCC by August 16th re: new regulations preventing
channel-switching and firmware flashing (eg OpenWRT) on wireless routers.

If someone from sudomesh could start a pad for writing a collective
response, that would be great. I'll have some time on my nightbus ride to
Berlin tonight to pitch in but will be unavailable for the next 8 hours.
Cheers,
Jenny

Subject: [internet-freedom] Murmur (formerly Rangzen) is live!
To: internet-freedom(a)lists.berkeley.edu
Dear all,
De Novo Group is excited to announce the launch of Murmur (formerly
Rangzen)!
Murmur is a free, open-source, anonymous messaging Android app that does
not require an Internet connection. Messages are not sent in real-time like
with other messaging apps that rely on the Internet and have a central
server, but instead spread directly from one device to another (forming a
delay-tolerant peer-to-peer network) without user intervention using
Bluetooth and WiFi Direct. The more devices the faster the message spreads
and if no device is around, the message is queued in the feed to be sent
later. Users control their anonymity and decide what information to share.
Lastly, Connection Scores help users filter spam messages and Restricted
Messages limit the audience to their friends.
The motivation for the project originated in the days of the Arab Spring
when a need to help citizens of oppressive regimes circumvent
government-imposed communication blackouts was identified . Our
implementation followed the tenets laid down in the UC Berkeley EECS
research paper called “Rangzen: Circumventing Government-Imposed
Communication Blackouts”:
- Infrastructure Independent: A mobile mesh that easily scales without
compromising users’ safety
- Trustworthy: Leveraging social connections to resist attack and
infiltration
- Private: Providing strong anonymity guarantees to users to preserve their
privacy
More background information about the project can be found here:
http://denovogroup.org/main/rangzen-project/
The project initially was based on a rather restrictive user model or
extreme thread model as laid down in the research paper, but since then has
evolved to cater to a broader audience than just activists in blackouts and
include also ordinary folks looking for alternative ways of communication
using decentralized, device to device communication on the go, with little
to no fixed infrastructure. The motivations for the latter vary from
prohibitive data costs, lack of Internet infrastructure, fear of
surveillance and more.
To download the app go to the Google Play page (as of Sun 1/31 night PST it
was still updating so give it a few hours if you get an error):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.denovogroup.murmur
The project is hosted on the public Git repo at:
https://github.com/casific/murmur
We welcome your feedback and involvement and want to deeply thank all of
the core team and everyone that has helped us along the way.
Best regards,
Ron

Hi battlemeshers,
are you interested in joining the battlemesh but don't know how if you can
afford the travel since you don't live in Europe? We are currently in the
process of securing funds to offer a few travel scholarships, and would like
to invite you to send your application!
Requirements
-----------------
Travel scholarships are open to people not living in Europe. To apply for
the travel scholarships, we would like to ask you to send a short video
(not
longer than two minutes) to describe your situation:
* Where are you from?
* Why would you like to attend Battlemesh?
* What impact in your local environment do you expect from your
participation?
* Would you be able to attend without the travel scholarship?
Shoot a short video and upload it to one of the video sharing websites and
send us a link. Note that if it is private, we need a direct link and/or
password for it as well.
Contact

E-Mail your video to the local battlemesh team:
Battlemesh V9 local team <v9(a)battlemesh.org>
Rules
--------
Travel Scholarships include a return airline ticket to come to the Wireless
Battle of the Mesh (full week). The selected participants agree that:
* The airline ticket is issued by INESC TEC directly to the selected
candidates and sent by e-mail;
* The flight dates have a maximum margin of 5 days before/after the event
(exceptions can be considered in case of participation in another related
event);
* The selected candidates must sign up and pay for one of the special
hotel packages.
Deadline
--------
The deadline for applications is the 1st of March 2016. Decisions will be
made
before 8th of March 2016.
What is Battlemesh?
-------------------
The Wireless Battle of the Mesh is an event that aims at bringing
together people from across Europe and beyond to test the performance of
different routing protocols for ad-hoc networks, like Babel,
B.A.T.M.A.N., BMX, OLSR, 802.11s and Static Routing.
It is a tournament with social character. If you are a mesh networking
enthusiast, community networking activist, or have an interest in mesh
networks you might want to check this out !
The goal of the WirelessBattleMesh (WBM) events is to set-up hands-on
testbed for each available mesh routing protocol with a standard test
procedure for the different mesh networks. During the different WBM
events, similar hardware and software configuration will be used based
on the OpenWRT BoardSupportPackage and packages for each protocol
implementation. The WBM events are also a great opportunity to develop
testing tools for PHY/MAC radio layers (drivers, scripts and PHY
analyzers) .
This years Battlemesh will take place from 1st - 7th May 2016 in
Porto, Portugal.

Hey all,
I started making some fixes, and ended up going down the rabbit hole
improving the site.
Submit bug reports, pull requests, etc here:

we should update our wishlist
also -- what's the current status of monetary donations online? focus on

I'm thinking we should add this info to the site asap
Hey folks!
Want to come join me at "City Camp Oakland" this weekend?
http://citycamp.com/oakland/
According to the website, it's an "unconference focused on innovation and
collaboration for municipal governments, community organizations and
citizens."
I'm a bit skeptical some of the ideas, but I think it could be a useful
opportunity to connect to some local folks who could really help us out.
For example, I just found out that the building Laurel Books is in on Oscar
Grant Plaza is actually owned by the city. The owner of the business would
be totally on board with our plans, but she's concerned about whether the
city would allow us to mount antennas.
To that purpose, I've added a "topic/session" to talk about peoplesopen.net!
http://openoakland.uservoice.com/forums/340653-citycamp-oakland2016/suggest…
I'd love to have another person or two there to help schmooze/tell people
how amazing our idea is!
Thanks!
Max
A location that we're doing an install needs a little bit of electrical
work before we can put some radios on their roof.
Specifically, I think it would include:
- Breaking out wire from some existing conduit outdoors and adding another
section of conduit.
- Installing a NEMA (outdoor weatherproof electrical/etc.) box.
- Adding a breaker to the circuit breaker where the second line in the
conduit would connect.
This would be a huge help as this location has the potential to be a pretty
awesome hub and we just need a little work to get it up and going.
Thanks a bunch!
Maxb
Hey mesh folks!
We're having a general meeting tomorrow Tuesday 1/26/2016 at 7:30pm. If
you've been thinking about coming by or helping out and don't know where to
start, or if you're just curious about what we're up to and want to know
what the deal is, a general meeting is the time and place to ask.
We'll at least start the meeting in sudoroom (https://sudoroom.org/) which
is the big space with the robot arm towards the back of the Omni building (
https://omnicommons.org/) at 4799 Shattuck in Oakland. Depending on turnout
we sometimes find a room with a little more space, but it's not too hard to
find us.
We have a handful of updates and plenty of things that we can plug people
into, so if you've ever been interested, come by!
Max
Hey folks,
I enabled the "garden gnome" on the production exit server. What this
should do is trigger certain operating system's network connectivity probes
so that they'll show a splash page when people join the network. It's
designed to be as minimally intrusive as possible, so it only captures
probes to the specific urls that OSX/iOS/Android/Windows test to see if
they're connected to the internet.
Once a user clicks "go to the internet", that IP will be added to a white
list so they won't see the splash page again for 24 hours.
Please please please let me know if there are any issues that you
encounter. We absolutely don't want to have people unable to connect to the
network for some reason or another. I don't really have enough devices to
test on, so it's very possible that there could be an issue somewhere.
There are a couple design bits that I know I need to polish, but I'm open
to constructive feedback on any aspect of it.
Thanks!
Maxb

=====================================
Brief Description
Wireless networks dominate the "last hop" over which individual device
are connected.
The rapidly growing wireless traffic has a highly heterogeneous nature,
ranging from
massive video to highly delay sensitive real- time control data.In order
to assure the
required "quality of user experience" heterogeneous networks concepts:
e.g. cellular,
WLANs, sensor networks, delay tolerant networksare increasingly
considered not only
as alternative solutions but as parts of consistent heterogeneous
communication infrastructure.
This seminar will include discussion of methods and models used for
performance evaluation
of wireless networks butthe main focus will be on lessons which can be
learned outof the
performance studies: trends in networks design, opportunities for
improving the efficiency
of their operation, possibilities for harmonization of applications
and underlying networks.
Students are expected to have some familiarity with computer networks
and wireless
communication, be active in reading, presenting and discussing papers
as well as active
within the project work.
