Subject: UPDATE: Brazil & Germany UN Pro-Privacy Resolution (update)
To: rights(a)eff.org <rights(a)eff.org>
Hi everyone,
As you all know, the UN General Assembly is considering a resolution on
surveillance and human rights called “the right to privacy in the
digital age,” introduced by the Brazilian and German delegations. Leaks
like this one
<http://columlynch.tumblr.com/post/67588682409/right-to-privacy-in-the-digit…>
demonstrate
that there are efforts by the United States and its allies to weaken the
resolution.
This prompted a quick reaction from some of us
<http://www.hrw.org/node/120813> asking the General Assembly to take a
strong stand against mass surveillance.
Access’ Deborah Brown has written a quick summary
<https://www.accessnow.org/blog/2013/11/21/message-to-u.n.-general-assembly-…>
about the resolution and the letter. Here is EFF's post:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2013/11/ungaletter
As negotiations ensue, we encourage you all to continue pressuring your
Foreign Ministries to prevent the introduction of language that will
diminish our call for human rights in this age of digital surveillance.
The resolution will come to a committee vote early next week, and should
be up for full approval at the UN at the beginning of December.
Some groups will launch a grassroots activism campaign during this
period of time. CCC, Digiges, Privacy International, Access,
RedPaTodos, CIPPIC, Center for Internet and Society-India, ORG,
OpenMedia.ca, Privacy International, EFF will be launching a
joint-action center on Tuesday designed to permit the general public
(non-expert) individuals to sign on to the Necessary and Proportionate
Principles. It will be hosted on the same domain as the Principles
themselves (https://necessaryandproportionate.org/take-action), and
translations will be up soonish!
https://es.necessaryandproportionate.org/take-action)
We see this opportunity as a way to improve our networking outreach far
beyond what each NGO is able to accomplish alone and by itself so the
more people on board, the merrier!
If you want to get involved in this activism campaign, mobilize people
onto sign onto the Principles, and help us increased our networks of
groups beyond the "usual" suspect, please send an email to: rights(a)eff.org
Katitza, Carly and Fabiola,

UNGA Resolution:

Here is the draft resolution as of Nov 1 (it has, by now, been amended):

We thank those who have already been in touch with your country
delegations and invite others to do the same.
Thank you

thanks to max ogden for setting up the landing page! After some hacking I
pushed up a simple wordpress port as the first iteration.
Next up are revealing the primary calls to action, and crafting further
user interaction with the landing page alone, hopefully deprecating
sub-pages. If anyone has insight, please use this:

This Tuesday, the 26th 6PM at Sudo Room, Sudo Mesh will be holding a
grant literature hack night. The purpose of this hack night is to
compile a set of literature which we can use to bulk apply to grants.

We are mere hours away from being ready to launch our first experimental
deployment! Check on the state of the code at our Github here:

If all goes according to plan, we'll also have a special guest - Sri from
the Wireless For Communities <http://wforc.in> project, working on building
a dozen (so far) mesh networks to support rural villages in South India.
See y'all at 7:30!

To: i290m-ocpp(a)ischool.berkeley.edu <i290m-ocpp(a)ischool.berkeley.edu>
Dear Class,
Hypothes.is and a few others (Internet Archive, Twitter, Wikimedia), are
organizing a "semi-regular get together" called Open Drinks. It's
basically a chance for people working and/or interested in open source
to get together and talk over drinks.
I think it will be a fun networking, and we can all head over to TT
afterwards. I'm sure many of them will be interested in our class.
>
> We've finally gotten organized, and have chosen a date for the first of these:
> When: Thu Nov 21. 6pm
> Where: Palomino on the Embarcadero @ Folsom
> Who: You and your fellow comrades.
It's tomorrow at 6! Hope to see you there!
