I know the subject line is like.. woot!?? :)
But seriously... :) I am looking for someone to hold my hand and walk me
through (help me with) a couple of small projects. Here is what I wish to
accomplish:
1- to get a router with OpenWRT (Not sure of its capabilities, but I like
the idea to get ride of the corporate code, because potential backdoors)
2- and if needed, a tiny computer that would be always connected to a VPN
account, so that all home computers can use it as their gateway; IF the
router cannot do this.
What can I give in exchange?
Well, I don't know what knowledge I can share when all of you seem to be
way above my head.
I don't know, maybe Photography? Spanish? :)
Please let me know if interested, we can start right away. I am eager to
start this.
Many thanks,
Daniel

Hey so I'm super late, but I am definitely coming (I got sucked into
watching a basketball game!)
I did call these folks today:
http://www.hamradio.com/locations.cfm?storeid=3
I asked about non-penetrating mounts and they mentioned that they have
"tripods". I know that's not really what we were thinking about, but I
think it'll be worth it for me to swing by tomorrow and take a look. I'll
drive, so if anyone else is interested in swinging by, let me know.
Probably around 2:30 or so...
On other notes:
- What are people's thoughts about new payment processing solutions? We've
gotten some notices from gratipay that they've fixed their issues, but that
we'll have to re-apply as a "team". We *could* roll our own stripe system,
but in my experience using stripe to charge credit cards is easy, but
properly managing recurring payments is not that easy. I personally would
prefer to continue to allow a third-party to do that work. Does anyone know
what sudoroom is doing?
- The sudomesh.org server (and peoplesopen.net and all the other stuff) is
slowly being brought back to life. I believe that @sudomesh.org (and @
peoplesopen.net) email addresses are currently down, so it might make sense
for us to fix that first before we apply at gratipay again. I have
purchased a digital ocean VPS, so the next step is to finish setting it up
and then coordinate with marc on DNS settings.
- Node mounting this sunday? Of course, if we get the non-penetrating
mount, we can set up a link between Will and the Omni. Even if we don't get
the non-penetrating mount, there's plenty to be done. We need to run cable
(not a simple feat to do correctly), configure a mesh node tp-link or
mynet, configure extender node antennas, and create a link between them (we
can just do it by holding up a radio on the omni side by hand). Who would
be around to do some of this? Will is on this list, but I might get in
touch with him off-list anyhow to see if he'll be around and would be
interested.
Hi!
Please help us fill in the spreadsheet of community network management
solutions out there. We filled in those we know about, but even those
only partially. So if in your network you are using some solutions for
network management, please fill it in:
https://goo.gl/JbD4VC
As we are working on nodewatcher v3 we are trying to keep up with
developments of others. We will also use this data in the paper we are
writing about managing community networks. Feel free to use the data as
well. If you strongly feel that some column is missing, add it, but
remember that it has to be filled for all rows to be really useful.
Spreadsheet is CC0.

While this is something I couldn't participate in, I hope hanging out helps
me learn more about it. Perhaps next time I can help with something that
can be done down at the table such as adjust the routers?
I'm the one with questions about whether it is possible (or even wise) to
build local political relationships to boost local library wifi out into
surrounding neighborhoods. Then Mesh concepts could be used from there. I
ask because I see an opening to develop that kind of relationship and ask
for civic space goods in South Berkeley. The City is sidling up to us
because they need to show they worked with the community when they apply
for big Federal transportation grants later.
Matt and Jenny brought up some concerns about using libraries as signal
sources:
1) Library workers are unionized and will object to putting Mesh software
on their computers. They have a select set of software they have agreed to
maintain. Software conflicts may cause unanticipated conflicts and create
extra work for them.
2) Libraries block some content.
3) Libraries turn off their wifi when they close, and their hours may
change according to city budget.
I've had some fantastic opportunities lately to pursue the "boosting
library wifi" idea, but I want to make sure this is a good thing to pursue
before I do. The impression I got from a chat with Jenny yesterday is Mesh
just wasn't ready to work with the library scenario yet, but there was no
legal/political problem with discussing it. The chorus of advice is to
"bring it up with April!"
I did have a really sweet opportunity on Saturday to bring Mesh up with my
Council Member, and in the current situation it's possible those
opportunities might come up a few more times. I'd welcome any guidance
about what to do (or NOT to do) on such occasions.

Hi all,
As it seems some Ethernet runs are planned for today, I was thinking about
power distribution also for the Beagle Bone Blacks (maybe not Blacks but
anyhow) recc'd by Marc to control electronic access at each door needing it.
Stringing extension cords & wall warts from ea. BBB - door set is both not
code-worthy (if an inspector really wanted to bust our balls since
'permanent' extension cords are called out), multiple AC>DC conversion
is also power-inefficient, prone to power loss/unplugging & and may require
further electrical work to bring outlets closer to some doors..
Since I understood that BBB's don't accept Power over Ethernet (PoE) I was
considering central low-voltage power distribution through a single
Variac-type DC power supply, DC PDU, PowerPole connectors and the zipline
of appropriate gauge for the runs to deliver ~5VDC at the BBB endpoints (I
have done this before).
However (even if it is not as power-efficient) if we are injecting at
Sudo's racks it seems we could use Ethernet for power if
we inject 12VDC PoE, then break it out at the end to a cheap 12>5VDC
adapter which could in turn feed the 5VDC port on the BBB's - check out the
last post of:
https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/beagleboard/nrRZJkCWQa0
If we're running the thicker-gauge pairs in cat6 (compared to Cat5(e)), we
might be able to get away with 5VDC injectors but probably the injection
point would have to be more centralized within the building than the racks
in sudo room - like in the basement furnace room e.g., which makes most
sense to me as the central distribution point for Ethernet runs around the
building, due to it's centrality, the ease of running
into/along ducting/registers, proximity to the basement,
perimeter crawlspaces, the ease of lateral runs through the basement, etc.
Love
David
We're running ethernet cable and installing wifi routers at Omni tomorrow
at 1 pm!
We're low on hammers, so bring one if you can. We will need them to attach
cable clip nails.
If you have a really long drill bit for punching through walls that might
come in handy. I'm not sure we'll need it (most walls at Omni are very
thin), but if you have one bring it!
also bring snacks/drinks if you can (caffeine > alcohol)
I will try to brew some (non-carbonated) sudo mate :)
hack hack hack!

I got a propane BBQ yesterday and I want to try it out!
Today (Tuesday) isn't going to be quite as warm as yesterday, at least not
in the evening, so how's about we meet at my place in West Oakland, at 6 pm
(before it gets cold and dark) with our laptops and some stuff to throw on
the barbie and then head to the New Parkway to watch Ex Machina?
http://thenewparkway.com/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ex_Machina_%28film%29
Good idea? Bad idea?
( i'm in the mood for celebrating a bit since the CCL kickstarter just
reached its goal :)
